Statistics (for CHE)

1. Results from a study to determine the effect of filtering the sample on the determination of the phosphorus
content of detergent samples (results expressed as mg L–1) are given below.

51 63 55 72 89 78 66 85 92 76
80 77 97 61 71 84 90 75 64 77
66 52 69 76 99 81 58 86 72 96
57 83 75 87 53 67 73 54 91 68
76 65 88 78 62 94 78 85 60 95
59 93 56 98 82 70 55 74 89 89

Make a new data table of phosphorus content by adding last two digits of your registration number with each
datapoint of the above data table and write the resulting data table.

i) From the new data table, construct a frequency distribution of the modified data on phosphorus
content.
ii) Calculate arithmetic mean, median, mode and 85th percentile of the modified data on phosphorus
content from your constructed frequency distribution.
iii) Calculate standard deviation, variance and coefficient of variation (CV) of the modified data on
phosphorus content from your constructed frequency distribution.

2. Age (in years) and bilirubin level (mg/dl) of 20 patients who were diagnosed with acute hepatitis A are given
below:

Age: 21 33 26 40 52 23 34 46 55 27 49 37 46 28 61 36 47 39 45 25
Bilirubin: 5 9 6 11 15 7 9 13 16 8 12 10 11 6 17 10 13 11 14 6

Make a new dataset of age and bilirubin level by adding last digit of your registration number with each
datapoint of the above dataset and write the resulting dataset.

i) From the new dataset, calculate the value of the Pearson’s correlation coefficient and comment on
your result.
ii) Fit a regression line of bilirubin on age of the patient using the new modified dataset. Interpret the
meaning of the values of the regression parameters.
iii) Calculate the coefficient of determination (R2) of the above fitted regression line and comment on
your findings.

3. In a packet, there are 3 books on statistics and 2 books on chemistry. If 2 books are taken at random from
that packet, what is the probability that (i) both the books are on statistics? , (ii) one is on statistics and other is
on chemistry?
