I. Introduction and Rationale

The essential requirement of education is good academic performance of a student in

their respective educational institution. A pre-requisite prior to receiving credentials and

graduation in High School. These are attainable and indeed each’s training ground before

transition to college, but is fraught with complicated emotional, social, and intellectual hurdles.

Learning comes with different challenges in school especially if students are surrounded with

different environmental, social and economic factors. A huge factor that impacts students to

work while studying is their economic status. Thus, influences students to revisit their

priorities and options.

Working while studying is a responsibility shared by many less affluent but willing

young people and adults. Working students were classified as individuals engaged in

2
industries other than agriculture and forestry and whose activity status was "working while

attending school" (Tsurugano, Nishikitani, Inoue, & Yano, 2021). The explanation is

economics: a lack of finances and financial resources. Working while studying might help

supplement income or resources for matriculation or other necessities.

When a student becomes divided with responsibilities at school and at home,

performance is affected both ways. According to Kinsey (2021) “Financial issues are at the

top of the list, but difficult personal situations can put a huge burden and additional stress on

students”. Furthermore, student integration is critical to students' academic achievement

under Tinto's concept of student retention (Curambao, 2015). Tinto's concept of student

retention distinguishes between two types of integration: academic retention and social

retention. Grade/mark performance, personal growth, academic self-esteem, affiliation with

academic standards and ideals, and identification with one's duties as a student all contribute

to academic integration. The pupils' performance in school is one of the detrimental effects of

working while learning (Curambao, 2015).

As teachers, this is alarming as we found a significant difference in the academic

performance of students in Grade 10. Working students are attempting to balance the

obligations and roles of a student and an employee. This causes a high level of tension and

worry, rendering them susceptible to illness and inability to complete their school

requirements (Curambao, 2015). Minimizing load, dealing with stress, handling school work

and enhancing their skills have become our top concern for their academic improvement. Part

of our duties is addressing the problems we see among our students. We have observed that

most students that encountered coping with school activities and maintaining their passing

grades are mostly working students.

As Educators, we need to identify current difficulties, issues, and obstacles among

our students, as well as address potential solutions to these concerns. The first is about the

interaction between students and instructors. This connection plays an important role in

study-work-life balance through fostering student persistence in many circumstances,

particularly in graduate settings or with newcomers. Developing these sorts of institutional

relationships should be a top priority for institutions worried about attrition.

3
The findings of this study will present an alternate approach for improving students'

academic performance, particularly in science subjects. Our goal is to provide an Instructional

Learning Package for working students in Grade 10 at Ramon Avanceña National High

School in Arevalo, Iloilo City.

II. Action Research Questions

This study will be conducted to determine the effect of an alternative instructional

learning package in enhancing Grade 10 working students’ academic performance in

Science in Ramon Avanceňa National High School, Schools Division of Iloilo City for the

School Year 2022-2023.

Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the academic performance level of students before the intervention (a

quarter before the intervention)?

2. What is the academic performance level of students after the intervention?

3. Is there a significant difference between the academic performance of students

before and after the intervention?

4. What are the effects of an alternative instructional learning package in enhancing

the student’s academic performance?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

This study will determine the effectiveness of an alternative instructional learning

package in enhancing Grade 10 working students’ academic performance in Science in

Ramon Avanceňa National High School.

The Alternative Instructional Learning Package

The Alternative Instructional Learning Package is a compilation of modules, learning

resources, activity sheets and a learning timeline for the 2 nd Quarter in Science 10 which is

composed of (6) six Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs).

4
The Package will include (6) six activities, one for each MELC. These are output-

based activities that will aim to enhance working students’ motivation and improve their

academic achievements as observed in the study of Anwer, F. (2019).

Schedule and the Learning Timeline

The Alternative Instructional Learning Package will be given on the first week of the

2nd Quarter and will be returned on the last week of the 2 nd quarter or earlier depending on the

capability of the working student, thus, creating a flexible arrangement that will ease the

working students’ workload and help the students to balance work and school. A Learning

Timeline instead of a Weekly Learning Plan is attached with the Package, wherein the

students will be provided with competencies, tasks, and instructions to be accomplished.

The researchers will monitor the activities and progress of the students through text

and messaging for the period of the intervention. Working students’ phone number, email

add, and social media accounts such as Facebook and Messenger will be asked by the

researchers for communication and monitoring purposes. Also, working students can send a

message to the researchers via text or chat if they have questions and clarifications about the

Package and activities/outputs to be done. Moreover, the working students may set an

appointment with their teachers in case they need further assistance.

III. Action Research Methods

a.Participants and /or Other Sources of Data Information

The participants for this study will be (30) thirty grade 10 working students identified

using random sampling from a list of working students gathered from Grade 10 advisers.

Working students in this study will be students that are working and need to manage their

time to fulfill school and work demands effectively.

Modules that will be used are the modules provided by the DepEd Central Office,

alongside with additional resources from LRMDS. Six(6) activity sheets are teacher-made and

are output-based.

b.Data Gathering Methods

Pre-intervention. Working Students that will participate in the study will be identified

using a random sampling from the list gathered through the grade 10 class advisers at the

5
beginning of the 1st Quarter. The chosen 30 participants will have an Orientation regarding the

study and Alternative Instructional Learning Package. The data before the intervention will be

their grade in Science for the First Quarter.

Intervention. An Alternative Instructional Learning Package will be distributed at the

1st week of the Second Quarter. Outputs and answers of participants will be collected on the

last week of the Second Quarter or earlier, depending on the capacity of the working student.

Post-Intervention. Grades in Science of the Working students before the intervention,

in the First Quarter, and after the intervention, in the Second Quarter, will be collected and will

serve as the Academic Performance of the Working Students for the study. For the

computation of grades in Science, 50% of their grade is based on their Performance Tasks

and the other 50% is based on their Written Tasks.

6
c. Ethical Issues

Strict guidelines on the conduct of research and any existing ethical standards

promulgated and ordered by the Department of Education are to be strictly observe during the

duration of the Research. Privacy of the participants will be protected and full disclosures on

the conduct and purpose of the research is to be provided to them, given that they are minors,

parental consent will be required from them. All actions, incidents and decisions to be

imposed during the conduct of the study will be reported to the School Principal.

d.Data Analysis Plan

This study will use Mann-Whitney U-Test in measuring the effects of the Alternative

Instructional Learning Package in enhancing Grade 10 working students’ academic

performance in Science in Ramon Avanceňa National High School.

e. Instruments/Tools

The study will use an Alternative Instructional Learning Package as a tool for

intervention. It is compilation of modules, learning resources, activity sheets and a learning

timeline for the 2nd Quarter in Science 10 which is composed of (6) six Most Essential

Learning Competencies (MELCs). Six (6) activity sheets are teacher-made and are output-

based, composed of (3) three performance tasks and (3) three written works.
