There's an App for That

Upstate Technology Conference  June 2011  Jeff McCoy Ever since the iPad hit the market, educators have been anxiously awaiting to see what, if anything the iPad could do for education. As the apps increased, so did the potential for a high impact device in education. Explore some of the apps today that are changing the face of education. www.jeff-mccoy.com

Flashboard
Price: $Free Flashboard is a great little app that allows users to create their own flashcards in order to study for tests and such.

iStudious
Price $2.99 iStudious is a great note taking application with built in flash cards. You can email and print your flashcards as well as import thousands of free ones from quizlet.com

iTunes U
One of the best resources the iTunes store has to offer is iTunes University. iTunes University contains thousands of free lectures and informational talks on various subjects, including many of the ones studies in high school. Teachers can learn more about a subject they are about to teach from experts around the world and students can learn more about a subject simply by logging on and downloading the content to their iPad or iPhone. There are also video lectures available and most of the content is FREE. Use it in your class with your students or as homework for your students to extend their learning. Simply launch iTunes and click on iTunes U at the top to get started!

inClass
Price: $Free-$.99 iClass is a great application for students to organize schedules, take notes, share notes, create tasks and lists and even record. App is great for those who need some organization.

FlashCards
Price $2.99 FlashCards is another great software for creating flash cards. This app also allows you to create flashcards with pictures to help those visual learners a little more. You can create multiple stacks of FlashCards for each subject.

CourseNotes
Price $2.99

Course notes lets you take notes during class and organize them by subject. Later, you can print them or share them. Subjects are customizable and due dates can sync with your iPad calendar.

Kindle
Price $Free The Kindle is just one of the readers in the app store that allows you to download books for reading on the iPad. Kindle is Amazons reader.

Grammar Girl
Price $1.99 Grammar Girl has been very popular the last few years and now there is an app! Download episodes of Grammar Girl and learn Grammar the fun way!

Index Card
Price $4.99 Great program for helping with research or writing a novel! Users can maintain several projects at one time, each with its own cards. Cards/stacks can easily be re-arranged for easy writing. Email or export cards to others.

Nook
Price: $Free The Nook is another reader available in the app store. The Nook is used with books purchased from Barnes and Noble.

My Spelling Test
Price $0.99 My Spelling test allows kids or parents to create the own spelling tests. Students can make tests for each other. Spelling Test allows you to record yourself saying the word as well as spelling it. Students will enjoy practicing tests with this app!

Chronicle
Price $2.99 Great app for journal writing and capturing events. Pictures are easily integrated into the journal and searching for entries is a breeze.

Dr. Seuss
Price: $Free--$5.99 Oceanhouse Media has released a series of animated Dr. Seuss books based on reading theory and helping students read and be engaged in the story. Words highlight as they are read and students can choose to have the book read to them or read it themselves.

Literary Analysis Guide Lit Charts Guides


Price $0.99 This is a great app and vital for someone studying literature in upper high school. Great tool for AP students as a resource in preparing for the Lit and Comp exam. Easy to use with great examples. Lit Charts offers study guides for many of the classic books studied in high school. Contains lots of literary descriptions and analysis of the books and summary for each chapter of the book. Price $2.99

So Ouat!
Price $Free-$3.99 So Ouat has produced a series of classic children's books in ebook form. They've won several awards and the books give students the opportunity to comprehend and understand. Several of the books can also be translated into French and Spanish.

Shakespeare Pro

StoryBuilder
Price $3.99 Story Builder is designed to help student improve paragraph formation, integration if ideas, and improve inferences. Students can record narratives in their own voice. Story lines help students create stories and optional questions to check for comprehension.

This app actually has a free version with less features you may want to check out first before you buy. Contains the complete works of Shakespeare with searching features so you can find exactly what it is you are looking for. Great resource for anyone studying Shakespeare.

Maxjournal
Price $1.99 This is another journal application. This one is very easy to use and has tons of options when it comes to photos and scrapbooking features. You can also create separate journals for work, travel, etc. Each entry can contain up to 30 photos and it is very easy to position photos within the journal. Text automatically wraps around it for a great look. Students will absolutely love working in this journal for any subject!

CliffsNotes
Price: $2.00 The CliffsNotes series contains several cliff notes on popular books that are still studied in most high schools today. Simply search CliffNotes in the iTunes store to pull up all the cliff notes this company produces. LitCharts Search for "litcharts" in the iTunes store for these titles

Dictionary.com
Price $Free Dictionary.com is the app version of the website. Best thing about this app is that you do not need an internet connection to look up words. Contains both a dictionary and a thesaurus.

Classique
Price $Free Classique series produced by KiwiTech is a great production of many of the classic novels studied in high school today. Visit the website for a complete list of the works they have for free on iTunes.

Allen Test Prep


Price: $Free The Allen series of prep test will help your students practice real problems as they would appear on many prep tests including SAT and ACT

Star Walk
Price $4.99 Star Walk is a very impressive app by Vito Technology Inc. The site uses the built in digital compass in the iPad to orient and allow the user to see on the ipad in the sky exactly what they are looking at in real life. Objects and constellations come to life on the iPad in the exact location the user is looking at in real life.

3D Cell Simulation and Stain Tool


Price $Free This app was featured by Apple as a top higher education app and has won numerous awards. Users can create their own cell image, explore a 3D cell and email image creations to friends. The graphics in this app are stunning and allow students to really understand the composition of a cell.

Frog Dissection
Price $3.99 Frog Dissection has won several awards. This is an incredible app for teachers or students who cannot dissect a real frog. The app is in 3D and contains instruction with voice over. Students dissect the frog as if they were doing it in the classroom. The best part, no clean up and if you mess up, you just start over again.

Solar Walk
Price $2.99 Solar Walk is similar to Star Walk except that in this instance you are navigating a 3D solar systems and observe objects like planets close up. You can study everything about them in dazzling 3D. If you have 3D glasses, put them on and let the objects jump of the iPad.

Molecules
Price $Free For a free app, this one is not bad. Molecules gives your students a 3D rendering of molecules which can then be manipulated using your fingers. Teachers can download custom molecular structures into the program for students to explore.

GoSkyWatch Planetarium
Price $3.99 This app was actually shown at the iPad 2's launch event. Users can quickly identify and locate stars, planets, constellations and much more simply by pointing the iPad to the sky. Impressive images.

Science Glossary Atoms: A Periodic Table


Price $0.99 Science glossary contains scientific terms and biographies connected to the visionlearning.com website. Glossary contains links to more information and serves as a great reference. Atoms is a great rendition of the Periodic Table of the Elements. The full color chart allows you to interact with it in ways not possible on a flat version of the table. You can learn more about the atoms by touching them and even filter out atoms by increasing the melting or boiling point. Price $Free

DrakeEQ HD
Price $0.99 This is a really great simulation of the Milky Way Galaxy based on the equation by Dr. Frank Drake.

Math Flash Cards HD


Price $0.99 Need some practice on your math facts? This is a great flash card app that allows you to keep track of progress and has received rave reviews from several tech sites. Gives teachers and parents great ability to limit and filter.

Fractals
Price $2.99 Fractals allows you to explore in real-time. Users can select between multiple equations and enter their own values for Julia sets. Fractals can be saved and shared. Have you seen Kahn Academy? Kahn Academy contains a collection of math tutorials on almost every math subject out there. The tutorials are video recorded and allow the student to review or learn concepts that they may not understand. Kahn academy could be used in the classroom as a teaching tool or for students to use at home for tutorial. Parents will also enjoy the step-by-step videos of how to solve problems they need to brush up on in order to help their students achieve. Although there is not an app for it (yet) it can be brought up on the iPad through Safari.

Geometry Stash
Price $1.99 Great app if you need to reference a geometrical theory. Contains tons of theorems. Great reviews by tech and math magazines. Use this in the classroom with all your students or allow them to explore one on one.

Math Cards
Price $0.99 Math Cards is a great app for practicing math facts. It also has built in lessons for students who need a little more assistance and instruction. This app has great graphics which would be very appealing to students. Students can also get feedback on questions and answers.

Allen Test Prep


Price: $Free The Allen series of prep test will help your students practice real problems as they would appear on many prep tests including SAT and ACT

Mathematical Formulas
Price $0.99 This app is a great reference for anyone taking high school math. It contains formulas and all the basic functions needed to solve math problems.

Quick Graph
Price $Free This app is a graphing calculator that takes full advantage of the multi-touch display and powerful graphic capabilities of the iPad. It can display explicit inequalities in both 2D and 3D. Also has a VGA output.

Google Earth
Price $Free Google Earth is a great app for students to explore the earth. This app is the same as the computer program downloadable from Google. Students will enjoy exploring the earth with this app.

History: Maps of the World


Price $Free If you are looking for high quality maps of the world as they appeared in times past, this is the app for you. Be aware that due to the high quality nature, the app and maps take a while to download. Recent changes to the app has also put ad banners at the bottom which makes it more difficult to view the maps. Do you podcast?? The iTunes store is filled with thousands of podcasts from people around the world. Many of the podcasts available are educational podcasts and can be used in the classroom or downloaded by your students to help them study! Go to iTunes today and click on Podcasts to get started.

MotionX GPS HD
Price $2. 99 Do you geocache with your students? If you do, this is a great app to use in connection with it. App contains navigational instruments and maps you can download from all over the world. Uses the GPS chip in the 3G iPad or while in Wifi mode.

The White House


Price $Free The White House app keeps you informed directly from the White House. This app delivers the latest news, videos and photos and is a great current events resource.

HD History fo the United States


Price $0.99 If you are looking for a detailed historical compilation of the United states from different eras, this is the app for you. It contains an encyclopedia of United States History and contains documents that made our country what it is today. Great app!

World Maps HD
Price $1.99 National Geographic delivers this app with detailed maps of the world. Students will enjoy studying the maps of the world. Choose your maps style and learn about facts from countries around the world.

Declaration for iPad


Price $Free This is a reference app for the US Declaration of Independence. It contains text, notes, and images of the original documents that formed the cornerstones of our country.

USA Puzzle
Price $1.99 This is a great application for students trying to learn the states. The app is simple to use and set up much like a traditional puzzle.

Beautiful Planet HD
Price $1.99 If your students are studying world regions or cultures, this is a must-have app. Browse stunning galleries of photos by locations around the world and give your students a glimpse into the cultures and beauty of other places.

Constitution for iPad


Price $Free This is another reference similar to the Declaration app. It contains images, documents and tons of information about the constitution.

Shazam
Price $Free This is a great app for when you are trying to remember the title of a song. Simply launch the application and let it listen to the song being played. Within a few seconds, it will return the title and information about the song.

Guitar Lab
Price $Free Guitar Lab is a great app for anyone trying to learn the guitar but doesn't want to take lessons. The app contains high quality video to help you learn to play the guitar and you must have wifi or 3G to access video content.

Visual Metronome
Price $1.99 There are many free metronomes out there, but I've found that they do not keep accurate time, especially the faster the beat. This one, although it costs almost two dollars does the job and has been accurate s o far.

Newzik
Price $Free If you compose music or teach student to compose original compositions, this is a great app. It allows users to carry their lyrics, music and even music files around with them.

Note Goal Pro


Price $2.99 If you are a piano teacher or a student learning to play piano, this is a great app for you. The app helps you practice reading notes and gives guides and helps as you become familiar with the piano. Also allows teacher to track student progress.

Piano Guy
Price $Free If you enjoy watching Piano Guy Scott Houston on public television, this app is for you. He has a few songs out that you can download and he will teach you how to play like a pro. App is great for beginners and even advanced users will pick up a few tricks along the way.

Virtuoso 3
Price $Free Great app and it's free!! This is a good app for anyone learning to play piano. Great for younger kids to learn where notes are and hear what they sound like. Also good for teachers and pianists to be able to pluck out a melody when a piano isn't available.

Key Wiz
Price $0.99 Key Wiz is a pretty good application to quiz students about their knowledge on the piano. Helps practice both Bass and Treble staves on the piano.

GarageBand
Price $4.99 Just like GarageBand for Apple computers, there's an app available for download. This is a great app and contains tons of great features like the computer version. Students will enjoy

SketchBook Pro
Price $4.99 The SketchBook Pro app was named "Drawing App of the Year" by Macworld. If you use this on your computer, you will definitely want to download it to your iPad. Serious artists will want to purchase a stylus to use.

Rembrandt Paintings HD
Price $0.99 If you are studying art history and need high quality art for your students to view, check out this app. It contains many of Rembrandt's artwork in stunning HD quality. If you like this series and format, try searching for other famous artists. The apps store contains lots of different artists by this same company in HD detail. Draw or write a lot on your iPad? Consider purchasing a stylus. It allows you to draw, write, etc and is made specifically for the iPad/iPhone. Check out the stylus by Pogo. ($8.99-$15.99)

Kid Art
Price $0.99 This is a great app for younger students. Teachers can teach some concepts of drawing to students on the app. Students will enjoy exploring color and shapes in this program. z

ArtRage
Price $6.99 ArtRage has been one of my favorite apps for a long time, long before the iPad. The realistic tools and effects you get when using this app mimic real life art. Great for art teachers who do not have time to get out the paints. Paint and other types of mediums on here mimic real life paints and mediums. Students will love using this app. Check out the blog devoted to all the artwork produced by people around the world on this app.

Color Splash
Price $1.99 This is a great app for anyone with little artistic ability. You can take any photo, upload it into the program and it turns it to a black and white photo. Then, take your finger and "paint" over any portion of the photo you want color to be. This app can produce amazing results!

Brushes
Price $7.99 This app allows you to create artwork on your iPad. It does use layers similar to Photoshop to create paintings. Fairly easy to use for younger students. http://www.tenonedesign.co m/sketch.php

Calligraphy Art
Price $2.99 This is a great tutorial on how to learn Calligraphy. It contains several different styles of Calligraphy and you can practice directly on your iPad.

Art Authority
Price $4.99 This app is amazing if you are studying art in your classroom. It contains over 1,000 artists contributing over 50,000 paintings and sculptures. It is organized into eight periodspecific rooms making it easy for your students to study art in that period.

LiveSketch
Price $1.99 If you are teaching sketching in your classroom, this may be the app for you. You can draw with pencil and it looks like it has been done on real paper. Watch artists draw using this app by clicking on the link in the app store.

PowerTeacher
Price $Free The state of South Carolina uses PowerSchool. Pearson makes an app for the iPad called PowerTeacher that syncs with your teacher gradebook. In order to use this app, your district must activate the mobile services within PowerSchool.

Name Selector
Price $2.99 This is a random name selector for your iPad. Simply input your students name (by period if you wish) and let the system do the work. It will keep track of your history and who you have called on.

Dropbox
Price $Free If you have never used dropbox, you are in for a treat. Hate carrying around those thumb drives transferring your information back and forth all the time? Dropbox is the solution. Just install Dropbox on your computer(s), iPad, and iPhone and you are ready to go. Simply drop a file in the dropbox from any of your devices and it will sync automatically with the other devices making it available on every device you own.

Pages Notebooks
Price $8.99 Pages is a very powerful app now on the iPad. Pages is the word processor by default for Mac. Users can create documents, insert pictures, save, print and share their documents. Although a bit pricey, if you are looking for a dynamic note system to help keep you organized, this is it. You can create as many notebooks (and sub notebooks) as well to do lists. You can send your notes, share your notes and print them. This is a very dynamic app for the busy person who needs to stay organized. Price $9.99

Prezi Viewer
Price $Free Do you Prezi? If you haven't yet discovered the wonderful webbased presentation tool, go to www.prezi.com today and check it out. Once you design your presentations on Prezi, you can present and view them with this free Prezi viewer.

Keynote
Price $9.99 Keynote is "PowerPoint" for the iPad. It is the Mac-based presentation tool. Keynote is a very powerful tool and with it, you can create dynamic presentations for use in class. Note that in order to present using your iPad, you need to have a special connector in order to connect to the projector.

Taska
Price $4.99 If you purchase Notebooks, you may find that you do not need this app since it does contain task lists. However, if you want to create task lists quickly and have them all in one place, this is definitely a dynamic app. This is one I could not do without and use on a daily basis to keep myself organized.

Numbers
Price $9.99 Numbers is similar to Excel. It is a spreadsheet program that allows you to track information, create graphs, etc.
