whole country as it generates higher returns than any other spending on education or social programmes for children later in life. The report of the task force provides the government an opportunity to put children first by turning its early childhood policy around and putting it on the right track. A Cultural Competency programme Last week Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples announced a new Cultural Competency programme under which Teachers will be required to learn the Mori competencies under new rules to be introduced next month. The programme would begin to be introduced later this year and would be in every school by the end of 2012. It requires teachers to study tikanga Mori and te reo during their university studies, training courses and at school. It is good to see te reo competency being recognised as a core part of a teachers role. It also recognises that having a teaching workforce with a more in-depth knowledge of te reo and tikanga Mori has a big impact on Mori student motivation and achievement. What teachers and schools will need however is solid resourcing and ongoing professional development. Its important that any training in te reo and tikanga Mori is backed up by regular opportunities for teachers to enhance their knowledge and skills in the classroom. This initiative will undoubtedly pose challenges for teacher education institutions as there is a shortage of fluent te reo teachers generally. At a school level we welcome details on exactly how the programme would work in practice and just how cultural competency would be measured.

Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa te whanau whanui o te Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School. Our thoughts go out to the Christchurch people who have been doing their best to get their lives back on track after the September and February quakes. One family had only just returned to Christchurch on Saturday and now this If they return we will welcome then with open arms. In the meantime we hope that new damage is only minimal and that they and others will be able to continue the rebuild. "My grandad bought me a nice, warm hoodie jacket to keep me warm at school, but it disappeared about 3 weeks ago at school. It's a pink zip-up hoodie with "CONVERSE" across the front, and my name's on the tag. We hoped it would have turned up in lost property by now - has anyone spotted it or taken it home by mistake? I would love to have it back. If you've seen it please call my mum, Rachel, on Ph. 5482889, or leave it at Lost Property or with my teacher at Room 13, Rachel. Thank you, from Camryn B.
