Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine the uses of gadgets in learning English among
the undergraduate students of Patuakhali Science and technology University. It looked into the
frequency of use of the gadgets in learning which are laptops, smartphones and tablets by the
students.

Despite concerns over students’ uses of gadgets in educational contexts, the use of gadgets has
been considered to facilitate the process of learning and teaching. The findings suggested that the
teachers and students held positive attitudes toward the use of gadgets for English language
learning. The results indicated several considerable challenges and obstacles to the use of laptops
for learning. The obstacles comprised distraction, lack of teachers’ computer assisted language
learning knowledge and computer literacy, students’ non-academic use of gadgets, high costs of
some gadgets, lack of support and attention from teachers and authorities to include gadgets in
learning, and heaviness of those devices. It appears that students use gadgets for non-academic
purposes. The study proposes recommendations and strategies for the effective integration of
technology in students’ and teachers’ educational practices. The results according to the students’
answers were positive with moderate usage of their gadgets in their attempt to learn English.

Keywords: Gadgets, Laptop, Smartphone, Tablet, Challenges and Obstacles.

Introduction

English language is to be developed from the very beginning. It becomes difficult to the young
learners as the structures, and sentence patterns of English language are not as same as their
mother-tongue. English has the status of an international language, a library language, and window
of the world. To stand on the globalization, English is to be ameliorated to link the other languages,
understand their cultures, and develop wisdom of the world. Most of the young learners’ face
problems to develop mother tongue as well as English language in early stage. Teaching basic
grammar of English and comparing it with mother tongue of the learners is necessary to eliminate
their problems.
Again, in today’s generation, technology has affected and changed the way people live.
Technology has made people’s lives more proficient and at ease. There is hardly anyone who has
not been changed by the advances in technology and computers of today’s society. In today’s
civilization, transportation, communication, and education have been greatly developed from new
technological advancements. Many people have lesser stress in their lives because there are new
useful hi-tech inventions created each day to help them do things quicker and easier. Some of these
helpful technologies are cell phones, computers, and the Internet.
Technology also has negative effects in the lives of the user, and in his/her or her immediate friends
and family members. It affects the individuals’ personal health, family, social, financial, and
academic life. Over using gadgets negatively affects the mind of an individual. The individual
loses focus as he/she only concentrates on using gadgets or technology. He/she tends to forget
other aspect of life that is important, concentration reduces and the individual cannot focus on
other issues for long enough.
The use of technology in educational area has opened up a new path of effective learning.
Technology plays a great role in developing everyone’s future and professional career. Technology
is becoming a major part of the world today. It has developed and become more central to learning.
The researchers want to know the uses of gadgets in students’ learning. It is along this rationale
that this study will be conducted.
Statement of the Problem

This study determined the uses of gadgets in learning English at PSTU Undergraduate Level.
Specifically, it answered the following sub-problems:
• What is the students’ frequency of use on the following gadgets in learning?
a. Smartphones
b. Laptops
c. Tablet PCs
• Do they feel any obstacles when learning with these gadgets?

Methodology

Since the main aim of this study is to examine participants’ attitudes toward the uses of gadgets
for learning English, some processes were selected to collect the relevant data. Both qualitative
(interviews) and quantitative (questionnaires) methods were included in the study. It is very much
relevant that a partial job is done by following proper methods. As we tried to make a rational
report, we have followed the proper method to perform our job. Every study is done on the basis
of primary data and secondary data. Our presented report is related with primary data received
from field survey.
Some specific steps have been taken by us to prepare this report. At first, we have planned about
the overall study, and then collected data from the field survey. Then, the procedure was discussed.
Finally, some basic information related to the assigned topic were collected from different books
of English Language, reports, articles and websites. Then the required data for making this report
were collected from several undergraduate students. Then we have analyzed these data by working
as a group. After obtaining sufficient information, we attempted to conduct an adequate summary
of the information and project an overall picture of Uses of Gadgets in Learning English at PSTU
Undergraduate Perspective.
Objectives of the Study:

The report's main goal is to learn about the uses of gadgets in learning English at PSTU
undergraduate perspective. And to reach or achieve the desired goal, the report's main objectives
are as follows:
• To gain knowledge on the types of gadgets are used in learning English.
• To learn more about the learning process of English language.
• To understand the importance of those gadgets in learning English.
• To find out the impact of Gadget Based Learning in academical perspective of the
students.

Gadgets Used in Learning

A gadget is a small tool or device with a specific useful purpose and function. Gadgets tend to be
more unusual or cleverly designed than normal technology. In today’s life, tasks are maximized
with the use of modern gadgets. It is easier to accomplish daily tasks and people are also able to
do work with efficiency. One cannot even dare to imagine life without smart phones, cell phones,
laptops, tablets, iPods and so on. According to Gammuac, today’s classrooms are equipped with
the latest technology to enhance instruction. Smartphone use in the classroom is still somewhat
controversial, but the Calgary Board of Education actually encourages it as a learning tool.
Technology users are moving towards being more mobile, and teachers and students are a
significant part of that trend. On 2013, Lenovo, the world’s top PC vendor reported that they sold
more smartphones and tablets than PCs for the first time ever. Calgary-based SMART
Technologies’ SMART Boards are popular with both teachers and students. Teachers can project
presentations onto the SMART Boards and they can write, touch and interact with their content.
Document cameras are also a fun way for teachers to show students new and interesting ways of
looking at objects. Whether they are zooming in on the smaller details of a 3D object, or observing
science experiments, students can share an equal view of the lesson – without crowding the
teacher’s desk. Whether a student is listening to his own music while studying, or a teacher is
playing an audio book to her students, mp3 players are an increasingly common sight in schools.
Both teachers and students can make full use of mp3 players in their school activities.
Questionnaires

Questionnaires are very important part for making report. Single set of questionnaires was used to
collect information for this study. Firstly, we made these questions with the help of our course
teacher. Then we made a soft copy listing those questions and provide those among the 50
undergraduate students of Patuakhali Science and Technology University.
Students had to answer that with 3 options in hand. Agree, Disagree or No Comment. The
questions are given below:
• Using gadgets for learning English is interesting.
• The gadgets motivate me to learn some new techniques of English language.
• Interactive smartphone application is enjoyable for learning English quickly.
• To improve English Language skills, one can take any types of course from the internet.
• New English vocabularies can be learnt with the help of gadgets.
• One can use his gadgets to learn the correct spelling of English words.
• Misconceptions of English language can be solved by using gadgets properly.
• By using gadgets, students can sit for online classes.
• English Language listening skills can be improved by listening to English songs.

After studied this, we have come to a summarization that using of gadgets helps in learning
English. Such as:
1. Improves overall student performance
According to the study of Behnke, Gilliland, Schneider and Singer in 2005, the usage of gadgets
such as tablets in class can contribute to improved student performance, it also can contribute to
the decrease in the number of students who perform poorly in class. Not only that, gadgets also
help improve the efficiency of teaching methods and learning capacities of students using tablets
in class.
2. Enables student-centered learning
Traditionally, learning is dependent on teacher-centered strategies. But with the transformations
in the teaching methodologies and the availability of gadgets in the classroom, learning has
deviated away from this focus.
3. Enhances knowledge-retention
Retention is one crucial factor in determining whether students are successfully learning in class.
Correlatively, the activation of students’ multiple senses while using electronic gadgets in class,
may help with their knowledge retention.
4. Enhances presentation and illustration of lectures
Content is no longer presented through traditional methods such as the usage of boards, hardcopy
drawings, and old school black and white projectors, through the usage of gadgets in the classroom,
audio-visual and media presentations became not only available but portable for students.
5. Enhances collaboration
Due to the personalized and multiple functions of gadgets in class, collaboration consequently
increases among students especially in terms of classroom participation and engagement.
6. Can be used for research purposes
This is the most widely known use of using gadgets in the classroom. No longer do students have
to physically go to libraries and browse hardcopy books for simple research or homework.
Information is within their grasp in matters of seconds.
7. Can be used for easier access to materials and easier storage of information
No longer do students traditionally take notes but they can store books and notes through pdf or e-
book copies or through taking pictures of lecture notes. They can also record audios and videos of
lectures and discussions for as long as it is permitted by the lecturer or professor. Also, anytime
they need materials, these materials can be accessible through the most portable gadgets such as
mobile phones.
8. Can be used by students to verify information
Due to the easier access to information, students can practice initiative to verify among themselves
the data presented to them. Hence, improving their information fluency and critical thinking.
9. Can be used for easier communication
Students and also teachers no longer have to disseminate information through text messages or
emails individually, but with electronic gadgets, platforms for portable and easier sharing of
necessary school-related information are possible such as Facebook groups, Google classroom and
other learning management systems such as Schoology.

10. Can be used for virtual classroom or virtual learning

A virtual classroom is a platform through which learning is conducted online. Inside the virtual
classroom, mechanisms such as video conference, online whiteboard and chat boxes are used by
students and teacher.

Conclusion

Gadget Based Learning is fairly a new area, and full potential is yet to be realized in the field of
education. Any piece of knowledge on Gadget Based Learning is a contribution to its knowledge
base. In this way, the research study of the investigator can be considered as a small but significant
contribution to education. More studies, that too in different dimensions of Gadget Based Learning
are essential to understand its true worth. Hence, the research is not an end of the problem, but just
a beginning of the search for innovation. Another advantage of using modern gadgets is distance
learning. Technology allows distance learning: Perhaps the most important impact of technology
in education is that the ability to assist several people learn from different places at the identical
time. Students don't must gather at a pre-determined time or place to find out and receive
instructions and knowledge. All you would like could be a computer connected to the modem;
these tools can literally deliver a “classroom” in people’s homes and offices. The technology has
helped provide remote learners with online communities, live chat rooms and bulletin boards. All
of this permits’ students to collaborate and communicate, even when isolated in their own spaces.
