Truly, the Lord loves him, punishes, beats every son, he accepts ().

And there is
nothing incongruous in this. For those who enjoy the friendship of kings are most
exposed to danger in wars, accept wounds, and are sent to foreign lands. And this
most gives them the right to have boldness before the king and with those who are
higher than them, to treat at last as an equal, because they wear wounds on their
bodies - these are pledges of friendship. But if you ask: what of this for those for
whom this stumbling block? I will answer: for them it serves as a stumbling block
because of their meaninglessness, and not because of the nature of the deed,
because the reward for the labors is not here, on the contrary, here are exploits, the
rewards are after that. Therefore, let them not seek repose during their exploits, and
let them not confuse the times. But say, maybe: I am weak. God also provides for
you, and here He punishes many who are wicked, and rewards other righteous
ones. Therefore, if those righteous people who are in trouble tempt you, let those
who are at rest and honor edify you; and if those wicked people who are prosperous
serve as a stumbling block for you, then let those who are punished and tormented
will correct them (St. Isidore Pelusiot, 60, 450–451).

***
Do not think that all sorrow comes upon people for their sins. For some who are
well-pleasing (to God) are tempted (St. Mark the Ascetic, 69, 24).
