Transition to X9

This guide is designed to help you update your Mastercam files for use in Mastercam
X9. A standard installation to the default locations is assumed. If you need assistance
with a non-standard installation you should contact your local Reseller. Use the infor-
mation included here to automatically migrate the majority of your files, manually
copy any files not included automatically, and to get up and running with the latest
version of Mastercam.

Before You Begin

Mastercam X9 includes a powerful, yet straightforward Migration Wizard. The Migra-
tion Wizard has two options you can choose from: Basic or Advanced. For Basic, that
requires you to select and set the target directories and the destination location to
update the majority of your files to the current version. For Advanced, you choose
what file types and version types to migrate in addition to selecting and setting the
target directories and destination location. Some of the files migrated by this wizard
are:
 Part files
 Defaults files
 Operation and Tool libraries
 Control Definitions
 Machine Definitions
Many factors affect the Migration Wizard’s processing time. The most significant of
these is the number of part files you have stored in your personal (..\My Mcamx8 and
2 MASTERCAM X9/ Transition to X9

shared (..\Shared Mcamx8) directories. You may choose to relocate your part files to
shorten the migration process.

Running the Migration Wizard

Run the Migration Wizard the first time you launch Mastercam X9 and before you
begin to make changes to the X9 setup.
Before running the Migration Wizard, be aware of the following:
 .NC and .NCI files are not migrated.
 If files have not changed from the originally distributed versions, then they
will not be updated to the latest version.
 .MTB and .KMP files are migrated, however, if you wish to import them into
the latest version of Mastercam, they must be imported through the
Customize dialog box. Refer to the Help for more information.
If it encounters any errors, the Migration Wizard halts the process until you take
appropriate action.

IMPORTANT: If you are logged on as an administrator, the Migration

Wizard processes the nethasp.ini file (..\Program Files\Mcamx9\) at this
time.

Handling Remaining Files

Certain files are not migrated through the wizard and must be manually copied into
the X9 structure. These include files that are outside of the default installation loca-
tions as well as the following:

Machine Simulation Files

Machine Simulation files are located in your ..\Shared Mcamx8\MachineSimula-
tion\Machsim folder. If you have created any custom machines or layouts, you should
bring them into X9. Simply copy the contents of the Machsim folder, including all sub-
folders and files, into your ..\Shared Mcamx9\MachineSimulation\MachSim folder.

Cimco Machine Files

Cimco Machine files are located under your ..\Program Files folder. In order to copy
files into your X9 installation you must be logged in as an administrator. Copy all of the
files with a .MCH extension from the X8 location to the X9 location as shown below:

Miscellaneous Files
Miscellaneous files include:
 Graphics files (i.e. JPG, BMP)
 NC and NCI files
 Native format files from other applications (i.e. DWG, STL)
Copy these file types from their location in the X8 structure to a corresponding loca-
tion within the X9 structure. They do not need to be run through any kind of update
process.
IF YOU NEED MORE HELP 7

NOTE: Use the Migration Wizard to update files in non-standard loca-

tions. Select File, Migration Wizard and choose Advanced to see which
file types are supported. On the File Locations page, select the Use
source folder as destination folder option.

This should complete your transition to the latest version of Mastercam. Launch
Mastercam X9 and enjoy the upgrades and enhancements.

TIP: Use Mastercam’s Zip2Go utility to gather Mastercam part data into
a compressed .Z2G file. This utility makes it easy to provide your
Reseller or CNC Support Services with a file attachment that contains the
information they need. Zip2Go scans the machine groups in your current
part file and captures information such as your Mastercam configuration,
machine definition, and post files. For more information on using
Zip2Go, please refer to the Mastercam Help.
