Summary :

The study consists of the evaluation of the effectiveness of the modular

distance learning on the criminology students of Northern Mindanao Colleges

Incorporated. Modular Distance Learning or also known as Self Learning

Modules was applied during the school year 2020-2021 as one of the alternative

learning substitute of the normal class setting as a response to the COVID-19

pandemic. The study looks deeper on the effects of the application of the Self

Learning Modules towards the learnings of the students. The researchers intend

to shed light and provide unbiased data about the overall effectiveness of the

Self Learning Modules and cite other factors that may play part on it overall

effectiveness. The researchers gathered data from 130 respondents. 48 first year

students, 48 first year students and 34 third year criminology students of the

Northern Mindanao Colleges Incorporated. The data was gathered through

questionnaire and then analyzed. The results show that the application of

Modular Distance Learning was effective enough to influence the students to be

confident on its capability to deliver information and learnings.

vi

The data also shows that there are different factors that plays a part on

the overall effectiveness of the application of Modular Distance Learning.

Methodology :

A quantitative research was followed to conduct this study. The

instruments used to conduct the gathering of data for the study was a

researcher-made questionnaire checklist. This study applied the unrestricted

random sampling method to select the samples. Samples was selected from the

population randomly by the researchers. The data was analyzed through the

Likert Scale.

Findings, Conclusions, Recommendations, Implications :

It was found that the application of modular distance learning to the

criminology students of Northern Mindanao Colleges Incorporation is effective

enough to be a substitute to the normal class setting in response of the COVID-

19 pandemic. It shows that it is effective enough to influence the students to be

confident on the ability of the Self Learning Modules to deliver the necessary

information that they would normally obtain in a normal class setting. The results

also show that the Modular Distance Learning is not only applicable in the current

situation but it is also dependable as an alternative or substitute of the normal

class setting.
vii

According to the results of the data gathered it can be concluded that the

application modular distance learning as a substitute of the normal class setting

on the criminology student of Northern Mindanao is effective enough on providing

the students the knowledge and information they needed. It also shows that there

are other factors that play a part on the overall effectiveness of the modules

distance learning such as the contents of the modules, internet access, its effects

towards the student and the study habits of the students.

The data showed that the application of modular distance learning was

able to be effective through its contents and its ability to deliver information to the

students, conciseness and clarity of its contents and ease of comprehension of

the information in it provides. Its effects to the students through its reliability to

provide education, applicableness to the current situation, how it influenced the

students to improve their learning and its ability to equip student with the

necessary knowledge played a major part of effecting the student’s utilization of

the self-learning modules. It strengthened the study habits of the student through

improving the student’s studying regime, establishing confidence and enhancing

the student’s ability to comprehend written information it was also effective in

creating deeper thinking analysis by providing tasks and it succeeded to develop

the student’s responsibility to study the lessons by providing time limits of the

returning of modules.
viii

The utilization of internet access also played a part on it overall

effectiveness as it was able to provide additional resources that aid the students

learning experience in utilizing modular distance learning.

For the Educators - Modular distance learning works better as an alternative or

temporary substitute to the normal class settings, it cannot replace it. The

educators must focus on the factors that may affect the effectiveness of modular

distance learning.

For Students - Students must work with multiple outside resources rather than

relying alone on the Self -learning modules and apply on their own the discipline

and determination to work with it and pursue learning,

For Future Study - The study provides data on the effectiveness of the modular

distance learning as a substitute to normal class setting as a response on the

COVID-19 pandemic. To look deeper on the long term effects of modular

distance learning to the student’s academic performance.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

COVID-19 has become a global health crisis. As of October 6, 2020,

almost 36 million people have been infected and over one million have died. In

the Philippine, this translates into almost 325,000 infected and 6,000 deaths

(Worldometer, 2020). To curb the spread of COVID-19, most governments have

opted to employ quarantine protocols and temporarily shut down their

educational institutions. As a consequence, more than a billion learners have

been affected worldwide. Among this number are over 28 million Filipino learners

across academic levels that have to stay at home and comply with the

Philippines government’s quarantine measures (UNESCO, 2020). To respond to

the needs of the learners, the Higher Education Institution (HEI) implemented an

alternative, the distance learning to continue the education despite of the current

tragedy. These include modified form of Online learning, Modular Distance

Learning, TV programs and radio broadcast.

This study focuses on one of the alternative of distance learning,

specifically the Self Learning Modules (SLM) also known as Modular Distance

Learning. This is the application of printed modules to administer information to

the learners, allowing them to learn without the aid of instructor/ teacher then
providing test question and quizzes after every lesson to evaluate the student’s

learning from the modules.

13

The study tries to evaluate the effectiveness of the modules and its effect
towards the students of the Colleges of Criminology of Northern Mindanao
Colleges Incorporated. It tries to collect data from responders who have
undergone Modular Distance Learning as they’re medium for education and
provide data that corresponds to how favorable the effectiveness Modular
Distance Learning to deliver information.

The research aims to shed light to the effectiveness of the modules and its

effects towards the students learning. By gathering data and analyzing these

data to provide suggestion cite deficiencies and factors that may affect the

student’s ability to learn. The findings of the study can serve as an instrument for

improvements and valuable resource for future studies.

Significance of the Study

The study is most significant for those who applied Modular Distance

Learning as their medium for education in response to the COVID-19 pandemic

and to similar studies who dive into the field of Modular Distance Learning.

This study is important to the Schools as a resource for data and facts

about Modular Distance Learning, To students as bases for idea on how to

maximum the effectiveness of the Modular Distance Learning on the side of the

students, To Educators as a source of facts about the effectiveness of Modular

Distance Learning and where educators can find improvement and lastly for

Future research as this study can be an important resource for future studies that

undergo in the field of distance learning and its effectiveness.

14

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is supported by the Theory of the Most Industrialize Education

by Peters specifically on “The Third Period” – which attempts to view the field of

distance education as an industrialized form of teaching and learning (Peters

1998). The theory incorporates modern technology, globalization and economics

to create a new style of education that would allow the learner to participate and

obtain information in an unconventional way. “The main reason for the rapidly

increasing interest in distance education is, of course, the unbelievable advances

and proliferation of information and communication technologies. Its digitalization

confronts teachers and schools with unpredicted, unforeseeable and surprising

promises. Especially for distance educators four astounding innovations are

important: improved personal computer technology, multimedia technology,

digital video-compression technology and Internet technology. Together with

other technologies they make possible unexpected logistic and pedagogical

advantages: the quick delivery of information at any time and everywhere,

genuine possibilities for autonomous learning, more interactivity, more learner-

orientation, more individualization, better quality of programs, and greater

learning effectiveness.” (Peters 1998). The theory of industrialization by Otto

Peters proposes that with the rapid advancement of new technology educators

can utilize it to create a new form of learning. By using these modern

technologies to reach further and expand the influence of education.

15

With the modern commodities available today to aid distance learning

knowledge and information can flow easier and much efficiently. Student from

different places can acquire the same education and knowledge without having

go to campus or school if they don’t have to. Distance learning can also target

specific field of education for students who are studying a certain field. The link

between Distance Learning and Technology is intertwined and Distance Learning

cannot be possible without some sort of technology. “Distance education is

mediated instruction. In fact, teaching and learning at a distance cannot take

place without media.” (Peters 1998). Although with all the advantages of distance

learning educational experts still did not recognize the concept and ignored it as

an essential form of education. “Distance learning was not only ignored by the

public, but also entirely disregarded by educational experts” (Peters 1998 p.14).

The idea that educators can incorporate the advancement of technology to

aid the way we educate learner and extend the reach of education beyond the

concept of face to face learning was one of the most important piece of the

theory of Industrialization. Although it was scrutinized by other educational expert

and was not regarded as an option for proper learning but slowly through time it
was gaining traction and educators started accepting the concept and distance

learning through the growth of technology.

16

“While the establishment of the Open University initially made little impact

upon established universities and colleges, most of whom were quite happy to

ignore it, this time technological change is striking at the very heart of

conventional schools, colleges and universities. Indeed, many find it reasonable

not only to develop electronic forms of distance learning, but also to establish

new divisions for distance education.” (Bates 1997). With the emergence of the

Coronavirus and the pandemic it caused the distance learning was put to use as

an alternative to the face-to-face in many of the University and Schools of the

Philippines. The results of the utilization of distance learning in response to the

Covid-19 pandemic as a medium for education shall produce results to which it

indicates whether it be positive or negative to the students learning.

Modular Distance Learning to the Criminology students of the Northern Mindanao

Colleges Incorporated,

19

Scope and delimitation of the study

The study covers the effectiveness of the modular distance learning to the

student of Northern Mindanao Colleges Inc., specifically on the course of

Bachelor of Science in Criminology. It is to analyze if the set standard is achieved

through this alternative way of learning. The study conducted surveys to a

specific population to gather and analyze data and provide unbiased results to

the public.

The duration of the gathering and analyzing of the data and the

presentations of the results will correspond with the duration of the school year

2020-2021. As it is the school year the modular distance learning is utilized and

in its full effect.

Definition of terms

For the better understanding of this study the terms are defined in the

context of this research:

criminology in the school Northern Mindanao Colleges Incorporated.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

Discussing the similar studies conducted in utilizing the modular distance

learning or other similar fields to enrich the study’s literature for many reasons.

By gathering similar resources provides better perception on the history of the

study. To provide the needed background resources as the urgent necessity to

have similar studies to use as valuable resources for this study and to also

provide resources for future studies.

Looking into the studies conducted in applying modular or modules as an

alternative and supplementary learning approach there is a significant trend

towards the advantages and the positive result it provides. (Sadiq 2014) modular

teaching is more effective in teaching learning process as compared to ordinary

learning methods. (Grunert 1997) by outlining the key concepts, ideas, theories,

skills, and procedures of the course, the modules can be structure to be more

efficient and centralized towards concise and concrete learning topics that are

digestible for the students. They give specific cues to how to do things; question

guides for reading assignments, rubrics and work samples for paper and oral

presentation (Andrade 2000). A number of studies utilized the pretest and post-

test method to analyze and testify the effectiveness of the modules and the

results tend to support towards considerable positive effects on the learning of

the students.

22

(Matahik& Mohammad 2012) modules contributed high level thinking skills

among students. As a result; student that has the aid of modules as an

alternative or supplementary to their education perform significantly better than

those who don’t. Through analyzing the similar studies conducted before this

study the researchers have found several deficiencies. The researchers had

observed the lack of testing towards; to what extent does the modules

effectiveness be applied.

Through the review of the related resources that has been conducted prior

to this study; the application of modules as an alternative or supplement

approach for learning. The studies concluded that modular approach has

significant advantages for the learners and may contribute to better learning

processes but failed to analyze the limits of the modular approach to learning.
This study hopes to contribute additional resources that looks into the limits of

the modular approach and aims to provide further knowledge that may be lacking

from prior studies. To provide addition resources for the on-going progress of the

application of module distance learning and its potentials.

Related Studies

Several related studies have pointed out different findings about the

integration of Modular Distance Learning as a medium for students to learn. And

because it is a fairly new idea to utilize distance learning as a viable option for

education there is not that many sources of earlier studies about the topic.

23

But most of the studies that where conducted found that utilizing distance

learning can have its advantage and potentials. “Distance education can be as

good as traditional face-to-face education” (Tucker 2001) there study concluded

that the integration of distance learning has is no significant disadvantages and

nor ground breaking advantages to be better or worse than the traditional face-

to-face education. Although not much studies have been conducted on the field

of Distance Learning yet alone Modular Distance Learning most studies that

have been conducted seem to favor the idea that Distance Learning can provide

the basic needs for conducting education but it is still not enough to consider that

it can outperformed the standard face-to-face learning. There are several

concerns that was stated by other studies of this topic about the inability of the

distance education to provide personal interactions from students to teacher and

vice versa as this interaction is an integral part of learning. “There are concerns

about the quality of interaction with the teachers” (Leontyena 2018). This is

because real time interaction from teachers and students within class discussion

teachers can provide additional ideas for topics and further discuss information

that the student may need to understand. There are also several concern about

the efficiency of the Modular Distance Learning as was stated by (Sumaoang

2021) “The great numbers of activities in each module is one of the main

problems that emerged in the implementation of Modular Distance Learnings”

and further stated that “student do not have enough time to answer all the

modules”.

24

Although this concern is not as significant but nevertheless it should not

be dismissed as this concern can pose significant drawbacks to properly apply

Modular Distance Learning. Aside from concerns about the Distance Learning

and its deficiencies studies have also found and discussed significant

advantages on the Distance Education. One of the most prominent advantages

that is discussed is the convenience that it provides to the teachers and students.

“Students have their own way of learning that would work for them” and

additional statement followed “the teachers can assess the learner’s needs and

make some intervention when necessary”.

Through reviewing the similar studies, the researchers have found that

there are no significant findings that would disregard Distance Learning more
specifically the Modular Distance Learning to inapplicable form of education and

there are also no facts that proves that Distance Learning is better than the

traditional face-to-face learning. Only more extensive research and

experimentation can eventually provide facts and shed light to Distance Learning

and its effectiveness.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Methodology

In this chapter the research methodology used in the study is described.

The researcher explains how the necessary data and information was collected,

presented and analyzed. Reason and justification for the research design, data

collection techniques and the instruments used to collect the data.

A quantitative research was followed to conduct this study. (Burns and

grove 1993) defines quantitative research as formal, objective, systematic

process to describe and test relationship and examine cause and effect

information among variables. Survey method was applied to conduct the

gathering of data by the researchers. A survey method was used to collect

original data from describing a population too large to observe directly.

In this study the information will be collected through questionnaires

distributed personally to the subject by the researchers. The questionnaires are

constructed in a closed-ended type.

The survey consisted of multiple-choice questions and is sub-divided into

four categories. The aim was to conduct the survey on 130 respondents from the
1st year to 3rd year BS-Criminology students of Northern Mindanao Colleges
Incorporated. The respondents will have comprised of 48 students from the 1 st
year, 48 students from the 2 nd year and 34 students from the 3 rd year students of
school year 2020-2021 which in total will be 130 respondents.

26

A student was defined in the respect of this study as a person who studies

BS-Criminology of the respected school. Participants are given apmle time to fill

in the survey anonymously.

Before analysis the dataset was checked for missing data and then sorted,

recorded and analyze in the manner of Cross-tabulation.

The Researchers choose to conduct the survey through questionnaires

because it is the most logical choice according to the nature of the study. Other

methods would render the study invalid with the reasons not being suitable for

the style and design of the study.

Ethical Standards
Ethics in research is a critical component. Research excel to provide

solution for challenges that humanity face and such it must be intellectually

honest. As part of the pursuit of the truth this study values honesty and

genuineness from bias and dishonesty. Proper care is taken to the persons

involved in the experiment and extra precautions are taken to comply to the

COVID – 19 health protocols. The researchers ensure the subjects moral,

spiritual, intellectual, social, economic, financial and ethical standard are

considered and are not exploited. The study doesn’t plan to go beyond what is

intended with the data gathered from the subject and ensures that their data is

only used for this area of study.

27

Population and Sampling scheme

This study shall apply the unrestricted random sampling method to select

the samples. Samples will be selected from the population randomly by the

researchers. Since the study is intended to ascertain the effectiveness of

modular distance learning, the researchers chose to do the research by selecting

randomly from the population.

The population of the study will be comprised in total of 130 respondents

from first year to third year BS-Criminology student of the school year 2020-2021

of which are enrolled in Northern Mindanao Incorporated. The responders will be

comprised of 48 students from the 1 st year level, 48 students from the 2 nd year

level and 34 students from the 3rd year level.

Respondents

The respondent of this study are consisted of first to third year BS-

Criminology students of Northern Mindanao Colleges Incorporated. They are the

ones who have enough knowledge in regards to the questions to be answered in

this study. The answers that they provide will serve as the resources of

information that the study needed. The researcher needs at least 130

respondents from first year to third year BS- Criminology students to be the

respondents in the study so that the researcher can conduct the proposed

survey.

Research Instrument

The instruments used to conduct the gathering of data for the study was a
researcher-made questionnaire checklist. The draft of the questionnaire was
created based in the researcher’s readings, previous studies, published and
unpublished thesis relevant to the study.

In the preparation of the instruments the requirements in the designing of

good data collection instruments were considered.
Preference for the use of the structured questionnaires to premised on
several research assumptions such as, a.) A cost of being a less expensive
means to gathering data, b.) Avoidance of personal bias c.) less pressure for
immediate response, and giving the respondents a greater feeling of anonymity.
In the end it encourages open responses to sensitive issues at hand,

Procedure in Gathering Data

In administering the questionnaire, the researcher used the vacant time of

the respondent to avoid distraction of class discussion. The student respondents
were given ample time to answer the questions. They will answer 20 questions of
which are subdivided according to their group. The questions are grouped by 5
according to the factors they are connected to. The names and other information
of the respondents was properly handled. The researchers then check if there
are missing or unanswered questionnaires. The researchers then collect the data
within the answered questionnaires. After the data collecting, the researcher now
gathers all the data and prepared it for tallying. Then the scores are recorded and
prepared for the statistical treatment which to be used with the study.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary and conclusion derived in the conduct

of the study which is the “An assessment of the effectiveness of modular

distance learning on the criminology students of Northern Mindanao Colleges

Incorporated.” It also provides recommendations that can be pursued by future

studies within the field of modular distance learning.

The study was conducted at Northern Mindanao Colleges Incorporated.

The responders were 130 Criminology students of the said school. They were

selected using random sampling. It employed quantitative research. Pertinent

data were obtained through survey- questionnaires.

Summary

The main purpose if the study is to determine the effectiveness of the

modular distance learning toward the criminology student of Northern Mindanao

Colleges Incorporated.

The contents of the modules has a weighted mean of 3.0 and resulted as

effective, Internet access has 3.1 and is also effective , Effects toward the

students is also effects and scored a weighted mean of 3.0 and Study habits

acquired a weighed mean of 3.0 and resulted as effective.

38

The data also reveals that all factors that have been cited by the study that

may affect the effectiveness of the modular distance learning scored at least a 3

on average and show that the application modular distance learning is effective

enough to influence the student to deliver such scores.

Findings

Based on the results gathered, the following findings are thereby

presented.

It was found that the application of modular distance learning to the

criminology students of Northern Mindanao Colleges Incorporation is effective to

be a substitute to the normal class setting in response of the COVID-19

pandemic. It shows that it is effective enough to influence the students to be

confident on the ability of the Self Learning Modules to deliver the necessary

information that they would normally obtain in a normal class setting. The results

also show that the Modular Distance Learning is not only applicable in the current

situation but it is also dependable as an alternative or substitute of the normal

class setting.
39

Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, the following is the conclusion;

The data shows the application of modular distance learning was able to

be effective through its contents and its ability to deliver information to the

students, conciseness and clarity of its contents and ease of comprehension of

the information in it provides. Its effects to the students through its reliability to

provide education, applicableness to the current situation, how it influenced the

students to improve their learning and its ability to equip student with the

necessary knowledge played a major part of effecting the student’s utilization of

the self-learning modules. It strengthened the study habits of the student through

improving the student’s studying regime, establishing confidence and enhancing

the student’s ability to comprehend written information,

40

it was also effective in creating deeper thinking analysis by providing

tasks and it succeeded to develop the student’s responsibility to study the

lessons by providing time limits of the returning of modules. The utilization of

internet access also played a part on it overall effectiveness as it was able to

provide additional resources that aid the students learning experience in utilizing

modular distance learning.

Recommendation

Based on the results of the findings and conclusions gathered, the

researchers recommend the following;

For the Northern Mindanao Colleges Incorporated - Modular distance

learning works better as an alternative or temporary substitute to the normal

class settings, it cannot replace it. Educators can apply the modular distance

learning as compliment to the normal class setting such as providing journals that

students can answer after the class session that broadens their learning about

the specific subject matter. Finally, the educators must focus on the factors that

may affect the overall effectiveness of modular distance learning.

For Students - Students must work with multiple outside resources such as;

journals, books and articles that provides additional knowledge rather than

relying alone on the Self -learning modules and apply on their own the discipline

and determination to work with it and pursue learning,

41

For Future Study - The study provides data on the effectiveness of the modular

distance learning as a substitute to normal class setting as a response on the

COVID-19 pandemic. To look deeper on the long term effects of modular

distance learning to the student’s academic performance.
