Question 1

You have been contracted as a System Architect for COCIS. Design a data center and new
computing lab for your COCIS. State your assumptions regarding space, networking equipment,
numbers of machines, and type and power load of each machine/device. Include servers,
networking devices and client workstations. Include the layout of the room, the lighting, and the
expected human load as well.
1. Provide specifications for each device
2. Compute the power and cooling requirements for the data center and lab
3. Assuming, your servers are to host DNS, Web, Mail & Application servers. What
monitoring tools would you use to monitor these services?
4. Since the application servers are mission critical, as the system admin, you are required
to write a script that displays summary of status data related to one of the following
categories: CPU, memory, disk, or network. The script should leverage OS commands
and files to build an easy-to understand dashboard that includes as much information as
possible.
5. The log messages from the application servers are extremely important and must be
reviewed by administration immediately. What system could you set up to make sure
that this happens as quickly as possible?

6. Assuming All computers at COCIS have 500GB disk. You have been asked to
recommend a backup device that balances cost vs. support needs and provide
justification for your selection
a) The Research unit at COCIS has 50 machines. Each machine holds a lot of
important data that changes often.
b) A development group at COCIS has 10 machines. Source code is stored on a central
server that has 4TB of disk space. The source code changes throughout the day.
The programmers’ home directories do not change very often. Cost is of little
concern and security is of utmost importance.
c) The Principal’s office network has two machines. Cost is the most important
consideration, and the users are not system administrators.

Question 2

Network. Netflix’s view streaming has the following properties:

 480 360-pixel frames

 24-bit color (each pixel is represented by 24 bits)
 30 frames per second
 10:1 compression ratio
Students Laptops have a 100 Mbps Ethernet interface and a 400 MHz 32-bit PCI bus. The
speed in CoCIS LAN 100 is Mbps internal network. CoCIS subscribes to RENU Internet and has
two connections of 1.54 Mbps each to the Internet.
a) How much of the CoCIS’ network capacity are students consuming when watching
Network?
b) What percentage of available bus cycles on students’ computers are consumed when
watching the Netflix?
c) Does your answer to Question 1 or Question 2 support forbidding students to watch
Netflix? What if there are 500 students on COCIS network? What if the COCIS Internet
connection is a 45 Mbps to the internet?
