ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

It is our proud privilege and duty to acknowledge the kind of help and guidance
received from several people in preparation of this report. It would not have been
possible to prepare this report in this form without their valuable help, cooperation and
guidance.

First and foremost, I wish to record our sincere gratitude to Management of this
college and to our beloved Principal, Dr.B.Sadashive Gowda, Vidyavardhaka College
of Engineering, Mysuru for his constant support and encouragement in preparation of
this report and for making available library and laboratory facilities needed to prepare
this report.

My sincere thanks to Dr. C M Patil, Professor and Head, Department of

Electronics and Communication Engineering, VVCE, for his valuable suggestions and
guidance throughout the period of this report.

I express my sincere gratitude to my guide, Dr. C M Patil, Professor and Head,

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, VVCE, Mysuru for
guiding us in investigations for this seminar and in carrying out the work. My numerous
discussions with his were extremely helpful. I hold his in esteem for guidance,
encouragement and inspiration received from his.

The seminar on “COGNITIVE RADIO BASED SPECTRYUM SHARING

TECHNIQUE FOR 5G SYSTEMS ” was very helpful to me in giving the necessary
background information and inspiration in choosing this topic for the seminar. My
sincere thanks to Prof. Sharath Kumar A J and Prof. Kiran, Seminar Coordinators
for having supportedthe work related to this seminar. Their contributions and technical
support in preparing this report are greatly acknowledged.

Last but not the least, I wish to thank my parents for constantly encouraging us to learn
engineering. Their personal sacrifice in providing this opportunity to learn engineering
is gratefully acknowledged.

ABSTRACT

The spectrum insufficiency, which is posing as a threat to the upcoming wireless

communication systems, can be tackled using spectrum sharing .The spectrum sensing
function of cognitive radio can be applied for spectrum sharing. The radio spectrum can be
classified as unlicensed and licensed spectrum. The spectrum available officially has
become insufficient and it alone cannot handle the traffic requests. As a result, the
unlicensed spectrum has to be fully exploited to support data communications in 5G. The
aim of this paper is to propose a cognitive radio-based spectrum sharing technique for 5G
that utilizes the spectrum sensing function to efficiently assign spectrum to the unlicensed
users. The traditional sensing techniques do not work well with different configurations like
fast time varying channels. Therefore, a sensing technique can be developed by modifying
the traditional technique on the receiver side by dividing the sensing time period. It would
opportunistically access the unlicensed spectrum to increase the cellular capacity within the
default sensing period. The proposed technique would enhance the performance of the
existing detectors for spectrum sensing
