CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 INTRODUCTION
Since the proposed project requires observation, actual investigation, and comparative
evaluation approach from existing buildings and/ or case studies, that highlights the same
degree of concerns, this research study would be best if interpreted using descriptive method,
as defined, descriptive research aims to answer questions and to accurately describe such
situation, condition, phenomenon and demography. The following are needed to further
investigation and evaluation
3.1.1 Review of Related Literatures
This process aims to gather all necessary and required literature readings that
can be used to reinforce the study of the researcher (the proponent). This can also be
supported by journals, news and articles, case studies and any other related topics or
readings such as guidelines, standards, codes to further validate the feasibility of the
proposed project.
By gathering all the information and supporting data, this process can
strengthen the ideas of the research study.
3.1.2 Case Studies
This process involves strategies, techniques and analyses to be examined to
support the discussion of the researcher, this requires understanding similar to
projects (or systems of innovations; building system, material production or so) that is
already established, or even under in-depth study/or proven possible. Therefore the
researcher viewed the same museums, approach and areas that are needed to
consider in the proposed project and all possible various aspects, principles and
elements
3.1.3 Interviews
By the process of interviewing artist and non-artist, the researcher can identify
the needs and deficient areas that is need to consider in project.

3.2 RESEARCH FOCUS

3.2.1 Technological Advancement
A generation of information and discovery of knowledge that is advancing the
understanding of technology.
- Augmented reality
An Integration of digital art that use’s environment in real time, Augmented
Reality uses the existing environments to overlay areas to showcase art.

Augmented Reality uses apps in cellphones to showcase 3D animations and

art exhibitions, contextual or art in the computers programs that converting a simple
art into Augmented Reality
- Hologram
The Project will also showcase a holographic exhibitions, a physical structure
that uses light diffraction bringing a simple image into a three dimensional
presentation.

- Phone application
By using our technological advancement to our phones, the project will use
this kind of system in exhibiting arts, where in the visitors can use the app and bring
the arts alive and part of the videos.

- Virtual reality
Part of the project will use virtual reality a three dimensional exhibition that will
allow the visitor to have and interaction with artworks,

- Lights and sounds

The system of lights and sound that will give more life to the art exhibitions,
through sound the project goal is a multi-dimensional where in the viewers can feel
and interact with artworks

3.2.2 Conventional Approach

- 2d Exhibition
The project has an area of 2d exhibition where in the project will bring traditional
artworks to life, showing the viewer’s the technological advancement.

- Sculpture
The project will also exhibit sculptures such as abstract forms, the flow and its
installation

3.2.3 Low Emissivity Glass

Sample Picture of Low E Glass

Source: (www.google.com)
Low-E coatings have been developed to minimize the amount of ultraviolet and
infrared light that can pass through glass without compromising the amount of visible
light that is transmitted. Low emissivity glass is glass that has an invisible microscopic
coating applied to it in order to improve its thermal efficiency.

 It allows short wavelength heat from the sun to enter your home through
the glazing.

 This solar energy works with your domestic heating system to warm up your
room, which then gives off long wavelength heat radiation.

 A large proportion of that long wave heat would vanish back out through
windows made of ordinary glass. However, the Low-e coating reflects that
heat back into your room so the heating system does not have to work as
hard to maintain a comfortable room temperature.

The application of low-e glass in the project structure is to bring natural lighting
and minimize the consumption of electricity needed to light up the whole facilities inside
the structure.

3.2.4 Kinetic Floor

Sample Picture of Kinetic Floors

The energy floor uses the movement of people as source of energy. This kinetic
energy is converted into electricity which powers the Floor's load given to the output.
In that way the floor is reacting to the public and involves people into an interactive
activity experience. As the structure of The WAVE promote an interactive facilities
kinetic floors would be very beneficial material for the project.

Generating off-grid electricity just by walking around or powering streetlights

with footsteps are no longer visions of a sustainable future, but reality. Kinetic tiles that
generate power from human movement enable everyone to generate renewable
energy.

The technology used to harvest kinetic energy is an electromechanical one.

Tiles are designed to slightly displace vertically when people step on them. This vertical
movement results in a rotatory motion that generates electrical energy.

The combination of photovoltaic technology and kinetic energy harvesting is

unique in the world and leads to an increased energy output of 25 Wp per tile.

3.2.4 Precast Concrete Panel

Sample Picture of Precast Concrete Panel

Source: (www.google.com)

Precast concrete is a very versatile product that can come in any engineered
shape, size or texture. Regardless of project type or complexity, precast concrete's
design flexibility can be a cost efficient and sustainable solution for building
requirements. Precast concrete cladding is formed by off-site manufactured precast
concrete panels, which can be used to clad a wide range of buildings.
The advantages of precast concrete include:

 speed of construction
 reliable supply — made in purpose-built factories and not weather affected
 high level performance in thermal comfort, durability, acoustic separation,
and resistance to fire
 inherent strength and structural capacity able to meet engineering design
standards for housing ranging from individual cottages to multi-storey
apartments
 highly flexible in form, shape and available finishes
 ability to incorporate services such as electrical and plumbing in precast
elements
 high structural efficiency, low wastage rates on site
 minimal waste, as most waste in the factory is recycled
 safer sites from less clutter
 ability to incorporate waste materials such as fly ash
 high thermal mass, providing energy cost saving benefits
 Simply designed for deconstruction, reuse or recycling.
Since the design concept of the WAVE is dynamic futuristic, Precast
Concrete panel is applicable to use cost and effective innovation.

3.2.5 Glass-Fibre Reinforced Cladding

The glass-fibre reinforced cladding (GFRC) used inside the new below ground
stations is one example where prototyping has resulted in significant programmed
benefits.

Through the prototyping and testing programme, the GFRC cladding and
cladding grid has been optimised to achieve a lighter weight, cost-effective solution to
the complex double curvature geometries.

The application of Glass-fibre reinforced cladding (GFRC) can be also used as sound
proofing inside the building as the Project the WAVE will cater an interactive facilities it will
cause a noisy environment. Application of this materials can minimize the sound noise for
each VR and AR facility activities.

3.3 RESEARCH STRATEGIES

A descriptive approach has helped the researcher to gather data and
information for this research to be completed, the research is divided into three phases,
Phase one focuses on the problems and sub problems through the use of books,
journals, articles, and news. The information gathered help the researcher to evaluate
and rationalize the needs and solution for the proposed project.
The Second phase focused on the data gathering such as field observation,
interviews, literature research, and consultations. The researcher conducted an
interview to 15 – 50 years old target users, Artist, Non-artist, NCCA worker, and
Architect of the Taguig City to analyze their suggestions to the proposed project.
The last phase of the research focused on the given site and observing the
vicinity the researcher gathered the data from Taguig City, The data includes the
Comprehensive Land Use plan. Road networks, Technical Details, City laws and
zoning ordinance of the city.
