(@) For ground wave transmission, size of antenna (/) should be comparable to wavelength (A) of signal, i.e., 7= 2/4. (ii) Audio signals, converted into an electromagnetic wave, are not directly transmitted. (iii) The amplitude of a modulating signal is kept less than the amplitude of carrier wave. [Delhi 2014] With what considerations in view, a photodiode is fabricated? Eventhough the current in the forward bias is known to be more than in the reverse bias, yet the photodiode works in reverse bias. What is the reason? [Delhi 2015]SOLUTIONS 1. No, two equipotential surfaces cannot intersect each other because at the point of intersection there would be two directions of electric field, which is not possible. 2. After disconnection from battery and doubling the separation between two plates. (i) Charge on capacitor remains same. Q=- : C\y ie, CV =C'V' > CV = z Vi>aVi=wv . Electric field between the plates re LW pve d' 2d”? d Therefore, Electric field between the two plates remains same. (ii) Capacitance reduces to half of original value as 1 1&4 _C Ca- caf a= bd {eli fie4 2 (iii) Now, energy stored in capacitor after disconnection from battery q q = z c 2 2 q q Uz =2| £ | =2u, wuek Energy stored in capacitor gets doubled to its initial value. 3. The total charge of the capacitor remain conserved and the capacitance of capacitor increases to K times of original values on introduction of dielectric slab. cv =cV’' Vv = 1 Vie CV =(KC)V", V'== ~. Newelectric field GP_3166Why does the Following Phenomenon Happen (reasoi 10. 11. cd 5G E'=— K The electric lines of force exert lateral pressure on each other, leads to repulsion between like charges. Thus in order to stable spacing, the lines are normal to the surface. On an equipotential surface, the potential remains constant and thus potential difference (AV) is zero. The work done on a charge q is given as, W=qAV Now,W=0 [-: AV=0] On an equipotential surface, no work is done in moving a charge from one point to another. Therefore, the component of electric field intensity along the equipotential surface is zero. So equipotential surfaces are perpendicular to field lines. Electric field inside the shell is zero. So, no work is done in moving a charge inside the shell. This implies that potential is constant and therefore equal to its value at the surface i.e., y-14 4méq r It electrostatic field lines form a closed loop, then work done by electric force should be zero in closed loop but we do not find any zero value. Hence, electric field lines do not form any closed loop. They start from a positive charge and end at a negative charge. They are continuous, because force is continuous. They do not have sudden breaks, otherwise a moving test charge will have to take jumps. If the electric field lines do not cross each other, the tangent to a line of electric field at any point gives the direction of the electric field at that point. If any two lines of electric field cross each other, then at the intersection point, there would be two tangents and hence two directions for electric field, which is not possible. Charge is neither created nor destroyed. It is merely transferred from one body to another. Electrons are transferred from glass to silk, so glass has positive charge and silk has negative charge.12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. Ast,>Tg > V,is the power factor. Ifcos $ is small, the current has to be increased accordingly in order to supply a given power at a given voltage therefore the power loss IR is large. The reasons of using A.C. voltage over D.C. voltage are, (i) By using a transformer A.C. voltage can be stepped up and stepped down as per the requirement (ii) A.C. voltage can be transmitted over long distances without loss of energy as compared to D.C. voltage. The resonance phenomenon is exhibited by a circuit only if both L and C are present in the circuit. Only then do the voltages across L and C cancel each other as both being out of phase. Achoke coil is an electrical appliance used for controlling current in an a.c. circuit. Therefore, if we use a resistance R for the same purpose, a lot of energy would be wasted in the form of heat. Infrared waves induce resonance in molecules and increase internal energy in a substance. Hence infrared waves are called heat waves. Energy Momentum transferred = ‘Speed of light eed of light = = 10 (for v~10"° Hz) Thus, the amount of the momentum transferred by the em waves incident on the surface is very small.
