What is controlling?

One of the most essential qualities required in a manager is that he should


command the respect of his team. This allows him to direct and control their actions. In
fact, controlling is one of his more important functions. As controlling is the process of
ascertaining whether organizational objectives have been achieved; if not, why not; and
determining what activities should then be taken to achieve objectives better in the future.
A manager must exercise effective control over the actions of his or her subordinates in
order to achieve the desired results. To put it another way, the controlling role ensures
that operations in an organization are carried out according to the planned. Controlling
also guarantees that an organization's resources are utilized effectively and efficiently in
order to meet predefined objectives. Overall, Controlling is the process of ensuring that
actual activities conform to planned activities.
