X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom

Lesson idea implementation:

The students will be given the eBook on their computers and will watch it independently as
many times as they want. Once the students feel comfortable with the information, they will
begin their poster board project. Their poster board will be like the eBook since there will be
pictures, captions, and information about their animal’s life cycle. The standards and goals
will be written on the board at the beginning of the lesson and will stay on the board until the
students turn in their poster boards that way, they are aware of the expectations. Students
will have access to the eBook whenever they need, and they will use helpful resources to find
the photos they need for their poster board. The teacher will create the eBook and provide it
for the students. The teacher will also monitor the students as they complete their project.
The teacher will grade the student as they present their poster board and immediately return
handwritten feedback to the students. The lesson will be concluded by displaying the
students work around the classroom and asking what they learned from this lesson.

Managing engagement:
To begin the lesson, the students will review the eBook independently for about 15 minutes
to ensure they gather all the information they need and get inspired for their own project.
Next, students will research their animal for an entire science period (30 minutes). The next
science period will consist of the students beginning to find their images (30 minutes). The
students will then be asked to print their images at home and if they do not have access to a
printer, the teacher will help them find on at the school. To integrate co-use/co-engagement,
students will be given the opportunity to discuss their animal with their peers and research it
together if they desire. After the students have acquired all their materials (captions and
photos), the teacher will review the learning goals and give them time to begin their poster
board (30 minutes). If students do finish their poster board in the time given, they will be
asked to finish it at home in preparation for presentations during next science period. The
students will then present and receive feedback (60 minutes, or two science periods). The
teacher will then ask what the students learned and review the learning goals one more time.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson helps students understand how to use PowerPoint while also learning new
content about the life cycle of different animals/ creatures. The students are given the
opportunity to be creative, learn new information, and practice what they have learned. This
lesson shows the UDL principle, provide multiple means of engagement. Instead of listening
to the teacher lecture, the students can watch an engaging eBook as many times as they
need. The eBook also helps all students especially those who might be auditory or visual
learners. They are also given the opportunity to be creative and complete their own hands-on
activity. The students will also be able to apply what they have learned about PowerPoint to

future assignments when they are more advanced.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I think the lesson will be extremely beneficial and will give students several opportunities to
be creative while also informing them of a new productivity tool. Since this lesson is aimed
for younger students, I think it is a good idea to ease them into the idea of PowerPoint and
have the complete a poster board rather than a full presentation. I look forward to seeing the
student’s poster board and watching them present to see what they have learned. It will be
reassuring to me to see that the lesson helped them understand a new lesson and get
creative with the content. It will also reassure that the students are no interested in
PowerPoint, and I might be able to guide them through their own electronic presentation in
the future.
