MENTORSHIP [l Cor.

4:15-17]
The root word for mentorship is “MENTOR”. Before going deep and explaining what the topic is about
– “MENTORSHIP”, I will like to open our eyes to who a mentor is.

WHO IS A MENTOR?

A mentor is someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger
person. They influence the personal, professional and spiritual growth of a mentee or one who is
accountable to them. They can also be seen as one who can support, advice, guide and direct another
person rightly. This kind of people takes their time to get to know you (in everything) and the challenges
you're facing.

WHAT IS MENTORING?

Mentoring is a process of passing knowledge from an experienced person to another person with less
experience. This could be academically, spiritually, financially, maritally and skill acquisition wise.

KINGDOM MENTOR [2 TIM. 3:16-17]

All mentors are given by the inspiration of God, and they are profitable to give you doctrine, reproof,
correction and instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for
every good work.

With the statement above, you don't just go for any man/woman in suit or anyone with a religious face as
your mentor. Yes, they might be good but were you led? Were you inspired to go meet them to mentor
you? What is the Holy Spirit telling you about them? Can you obey them? These are the kind of questions
we must ask ourselves before choosing a mentor.

Is the person someone you can confide in? Hope that person you choose to mentor you doesn’t have a
watering mouth. It's not enough checking their zeal and gesture to the things of the Kingdom, because I've
gotten to understand that, to whom you obey and bow to, you become servant to and you are likely to
start developing some traits or attitudes/lifestyle of your mentor. The tongue-filled brother isn’t enough
for choosing a mentor, but what the Spirit of God is saying. You must have peace so as your mentor in
receiving you as a mentee.

Mentorship is beyond I like the way this person acts and behaves or I can have this person as my mentee
because of how he/she acts. It doesn’t work that way.

What a pity in the world we are today where everybody wants to be a mentor, everybody wants to have a
mentee, even without them having a mentor. I pray they don’t end up being a tormentor. For someone
who wants to mentor you, he as well must have a physical mentor that is traceable, that is, the individual
must be accountable to someone else. Most people don't want to be accountable to someone and they
want others to be accountable to them. What a generation of hypocrites. Mentors are;

 Fathers in faith.
 Someone you can run to when you are met with setbacks (such as in the case of the sons of the
prophet to Elisha) - 2 Kings 6:1-7

 Someone that can show you the "secrets to success” when you have tried all you know - Matt.
17:14-21

WHY DO WE NEED TO BE MENTORED

 For growth: Anyone who wants to grow into maturity needs to be mentored.

 In other to raise responsible leaders, who are capable of carrying out the divine mandate assigned
to them.

 In other to be a good example in the citizen and society i.e. those worthy of emulation - 1 Cor.
11:1
