ECM usos the signal 2s ‘one ofthe signals to contra ful injectors Fig 6618 AF (Principe) When @ hot wire energized with a constant ‘current (resistance wire heated by a current to-@ high temperature} is placed in the air flow, its heat is absorbed by the airflow and temperature rise of the hot wire reduces (heat is conducted 1 air, which moves and absorbs heat). The less air flows (is drawn), the less heat is dissipated (absorbed) from the hot wire and the more air, ‘the more heat dissipation (absorption) from the hot wire, Therefore, ifthe temperature of the hot wire is maintzined constant by regulating the amount of electric current flowing to the hot wire, the amount of air flow (intake air) can be messured by the amount of flowing current, for the amount of current corresponds to that of the intake air. "elt Fig. E79 Aemount of ir Fow and That of Garant hen Hot Wire Teeratare is Rept Conant ‘The air flow sensor uses the above described principle and hasa circuit as shown in ig. 6E-20. “The hot wire temperature is detected by the ce cut in which the hot wire and reference resistor fare connected. Also, as the hot wire tempers: tre is affected by the air temperature, the intake sir temperature is detected by the circuit in Which the cold wire and reference resistor are Connected s0 as to compensate the changes in hat wie temperature, Arn Ly putting these two circuits inthe bridge structure, the current flowing to the hot wire is regulated to corres: ponds to the amount of the intake air and thus the hot wire temperature is kept constent. Then the current flowing to the hot wir, as voltage signal, is transmitted to ECM. As it corresponds 10 the amount of the intake air 3s described above, the voltage rises higher asthe intake at increases. Also, ECM converts the voltage signal from TPS into ON/OFF signal and sends it to A/T control module, where it is used as one of the signals to control the automatic transmission, ‘Water Tomperature Sensor (WTS) Located atthe tide of eylinder head, this sonsor measures the temperature of the engine cooling Water and converts its change into thet in resi stance though the thermister. That is, as cooling water temperature lowers, resistance increases and as it isos, resistance decreases. By monitoring the resistance of the water tem perature sensor, ECM detects the engine cooling Water temperature and that affects most systems Under the control of ECM, Fig E29 Waser Toperture Sno Charaioie (6620 ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION (EF1) SYSTEM, ‘Oxygen Sensor The oxygen sensor ig loceted on the exhaust manifold to detect the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gases. It consists of the zirconia ‘element (with thin platinum surface coating) ‘which generates electromotive force, lead wire which drawe out the electromotive force and ‘cover and housing which protect the ziconia ‘element from damage. The zirconia element, by its property, generates ‘the electromotive force when a difference in ox: vygen concentration existe betwoon is faces. AS its temperature rises, the change of the electro ‘motive force isamplfied by catalytic reaction of ‘the platinum. The oxygen sensor makes use of this property. As atmosphere is introduced Into the oxygen sensor, the inside of the zirconia lament is exposed to the atmosphere end out fide to exhaust gases. Thus the difference in con centration between the iside and the outside of ‘the zirconia element varias with the oxygen con: centration inthe exhaust gases, ‘The large concentration ditference results in about 1V of the electromotive force and small difference results in about OV. To put in other words, if the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases is loss (air-fuel mixture is richer than the stoichiometric mixture, about 1V of electro motive force is ganeratad and it more (air-fuel ‘mixture Is lesnee than the stoichiometric mix: ture), almost none is generated In this way, the oxygen sensor detocts whether ‘the oxygen concentration is high or low (or the ‘mixture is leaner of richer than the stoichio- metric mixture). Crank Angle Sensor The crank angle sensor located inthe distributor consists of the signal generator (pick-up coll and magnet) and signal rotor. [As the signal rotor turns, AC voltage is generated in the pick-up coll which varies in pulsatory way 85 shown below. This pulse signal (12 pulses! evolution) is sent to ECM where it i used to ‘aleuate the engine spoed and also as one of the signal 0 control verious devices. Re, "0", "2" oF “L" Range Signal This signa is sent from AT control module as 3 battery voltage signal only when AT isin "R, "0", "2" of L" range, Thus, ECM judges whether A/T is in one of the above ranges or otherwise (ie, in “P" oF N range) and uses it 4s one of the signals to control the fuel injector and ISC solenoid vale. ‘Air Conditioner Signal (Car with aircondi- toner only) ‘This signal issent from the air-conditioner circuit, ECM detects whether the air-conditioner is ope rating or not through the signal and uses it fone of the signals for controlling ISC solenoid valve operation. Battery Voltone ‘The fuel inject is driven by its solenoid coil based upon the ECM output signe. ‘There is some delay called es "Ineffective injec: tion time”, which doesn't provide fuel, bewoen ECM signal and valvo action. {As the ineffective injection time depends on the battery voltage, ECM takes voltage information ‘0 compensate i in fuel injection time (6622 ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION (EFI SYSTEM, Diagnosis Switch Terminal There are two diagnosis switch terminals; one ‘cluded inthe junetion/fuse block and theother Jn the monitor coupler inthe engine raom. SYSTEM ' LOTRONIC FUEL INJECTION (EFI SY (66.0 ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION (EFI) SYSTEM, EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) CONTROL SYSTEM (For California sec. ‘model only) This system controls the formation of NOx emission by recirculating the exhaust gas into the combustion chamber through the intake manifold ‘The EGR valve is controlled by EGR moduletor and VSV controlled by ECM eccording to signals ‘rom various sensors. “The diaphragm mounted in the EGR modulator is operated by back pressure of the exhaust gas ‘to open and close the valve. By this opening and closing action of the valve, the EGR modulator controls the vacuum transmitted to the EGR vate, Under a low foad condition such as low speed driving, the exhaust pressure is low. In tis state, the diaphragm in the EGR modulator 's pushed down by the spring force and the modulator valve opens to allow the air into the vacuum passage From the outside. ‘As 8 result, the vacuum transmitted to the EGR ‘ive becomes smaller and 50 does the opening of the EGR valve. “Thus, less amount of exhaust gas is recirculated to the intake manifold. Under a high load condition such as high speed Giving, on the other hand, the exhaust pressure is high, @y the high exhaust pressure, the dia phragm in the madulator is pushed up and closes kes vel. As the air does not enter the vacuum passage in this sate, the vacuum transmitted t0 the EGR valve grows larger and s0 does the ‘opening ofthe EGR valve “Thus, larger amount of exhaust gasisreciculated ‘0 the intake manifold. Under any one ofthe following conditions, ECM closes the vacuum possage of VSV. In this state, fs the vacuum is not transmitted to the EGR valve, it remains closed. ‘© When engine cooling water temp. is lower than 60°C (122°F) or higher than 100°C (21°F ‘= When engine speed is lower then 1000 ¢/min ‘When throttle valve is at idle position ‘© At engine start and when fuel injection is inoreased after engine start ‘+ When engine is running under high load Other than the above, EGR vslve opens and ‘loses in accordance with the EGR modulator operation. The operation of EGR valves i monitored by ECM through the signal from the REGTS (Reci culated Exhaust Goe Temperature Sensor) which measures the tomperature in the exhaust passage. In this state, the canister Is purged or cleaned by air drawn through te filter at the bottom of the “The 2avay check valve is provided to keep the pressure in the fuel tank constant. Whon the pressure in the fuel tank becomes postive and Teaches its specified value, it opens the valve to Tet the vapor flow into the charcoal canister. On the other hand, when the pressure in the fuel tank becomes negative and reaches its specified Velue, it opens the valve to let the airflow into ‘he fuel tank. 6£.32 ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION (EFI) SYSTEM ‘THROTTLE VALVE OPENING SIGNAL OUTPUT FOR A/T Recsving the throttle valve opening signal from the throttle position sensor, ECM converts it into the theee ON/OFF signals and sends them +0 A/T control madule through A20, A11, and 4 terminals.
