What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are
guided by the teacher's direction and expectations.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the
topic for presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal.
Products of learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a
lesson like this.
☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their
learning and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be
reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to
the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

To introduce the content within this lesson. Students will view my eBook, The Solution to
Pollution, to get an idea of what we will be learning about. After viewing the video, I will

ensure that students know that pollution is, what types of pollution there are and what some
possible solutions are to pollution by creating a KWL chart as a class. After this we will be
using PowerPoint to have students create a product of their own based on pollution and what
they learned. To introduce this tool, I will provide a demonstration video that provides
students with various examples of tools they can use within PowerPoint to create their project.
To ensure students know what their goal is, I will have a rubric to guide students, ensuring that
all students are able to see what is needed to make an exemplary grade. To provide students
with feedback, I will use the “comment” tool within PowerPoint to comment my feedback to
the students. To conclude the lesson, students will present their product and as a class, we will
fill in the “L” on the KWL chart.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
For this activity, students will use co-engagement and exploration activities to extend their
learning about pollution. Co-engagement will be used as students will be able to work in pairs
to collaborate with one another on this project. Students will be asked to share one laptop, to
ensure co-engagement. To ensure that time is being managed well and all students are on task,
there will be various times I ask the students about what they have learned so far and write this
on our chart. This ensures time-on-task with continued focus on the learning goal.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

PowerPoint offer various ways of the Action and Expression component of the UDL
framework since PowerPoint allows students to create products in endless ways. All students
are different, meaning that students have certain preferences for how they express
themselves. PowerPoint allows students oral, visual, auditorial or even written ways for
students to demonstrate their competency.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

This lesson idea is highly engaging, allowing students to be as creative as they want to be with
PowerPoint. When students are engaged, students tend to retain more material they are
learning, which is why I chose this BPT to incorporate into my lesson. I look forward to seeing
the products my students produce, since their options are endless it will allow me to see
multiple perspectives on how to rely on information about pollution.
