DETAILED ENGINEERING ASSESSMENT REPORT
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Building-1 of Rupa Knitwear (Pvt) Ltd & Rupa Fabrics Ltd. is a ten storied RC flat slab
structure.
A team from ALLIANCE (BV) conducted visual assessment of the building#1 on 29th
May, 2014. They recommended to perform check for structural integrity of the factory
building. In this concern, Rupa Knitwear (Pvt) Ltd & Rupa Fabrics Ltd. engaged
Sthapona Consultants for performing Detail Engineering Assessment along with
checking architectural and structural drawing of the factory building.
For Detail Engineering Assessment one of the key inputs is the concrete strength. We
collected sixteen cores (twelve from columns, four from slabs of different floors). We
found equivalent concrete strength for column is 2996 psi, for slab is 3726 psi. The
equivalent concrete strength has been calculated according to ACI 562.
We incorporated existing live load, concrete strength, rebar information etc. in the finite
element model of this building. Considering the concrete strength suggested by ACI 562,
all the columns and flat slab has been analyzed for 63 psf live load. All of the foundations
are adequate for bearing capacity & some of the foundation is overstressed for punching shear.
Live load reduction factor has been applied where applicable according to BNBC 2006.
Considering BNBC 2006 load combinations (i.e. gravity and lateral load) some columns
& shear walls are f o u n d t o b e overstressed and flat slab are overstressed, few
beams are overstressed due to shear and torsion. Shear walls require more reinforcement
than provided.
1 INTRODUCTION
Sthapona Consultants was assigned to conduct Detail Engineering Assessment of the RCC
Building#1. The scope of work of the project has been shown below, which has been
summarized based on visual inspection report done by BV (ALLIANCE) team.
(i). Develop the required documents to confirm the structural integrity of the
building.
(ii). Confirm and document that provision have been made to accommodate
concentrated load at ground floor.
(iii). The Detail Engineering Assessment of the building, which includes the
following items:
Highlight any variations between as-built and structure design drawings (if
applicable)
Results of geotechnical assessment and testing/investigation
Details of assumptions, loading, inputs and results of computer modelling
Commentary on adequacy/inadequacy of elements of the structure and
further action plan
The Building#1 of Rupa Knitwear (Pvt) Ltd & Rupa Fabrics Ltd. is a 10‐storied reinforced
concrete structure located at KUNIA, BOARD BAZAR, GAZIPUR Dhaka-1230
(Latitude: 23°56'14.34"N; Longitude: 90°23'12.58"E). Total area of the building is
about 127,270 sft (Table 2.1).
Information Description
Sixteen cores from different locations of column & slab has been collected to examine the
concrete strength. These cores have been sent and tested in BUET lab by UTM (Universal
Testing Machine) to find its compressive strength. Equivalent concrete strength (As per ACI562)
for column is 2996 psi (using combined failure at eleven columns and excluding mortar failure
at one column) and for beam & slab is 3726 psi respectively. Detail of core test results have
presented in Annex-I.

4.3 LOADS
The loads that may act upon the structure are as follows:

KUNIA, BOARDBAZAR, GAZIPUR.]
DETAILED ENGINEERING ASSESSMENT REPORT
Live load is the gravity load due to non-permanent objects like machines, furniture, and
human. Analysis has been carried out based on load recommended by BNBC (2006).
According to BNBC we have considered 63 psf live load for analysis. And for NTPA
compliance (When the structure seems not compliant with BNBC loading condition) we
have used reduced live load=42 psf.
Regarding the earthquake resistant structural design, it essential that the specific design
code is followed. For the analysis and design checking of this building, Equivalent Static
Force Method of BNBC (2006) is followed. The main considerations for calculation of
earthquake load are given below.

DETAILED ENGINEERING ASSESSMENT REPORT
These seven basic load cases are analysed by ETABS-V9.7.4. The results are then
combined in accordance with BNBC. These are as follows:
1.4 D
1.4 D + 1.7 L
0.9 D + 1.3 (W or 1.1 E)
0.75 (1.4 D + 1.7 L + 1.7 (W or 1.1 E))
Where D stands for total dead load i.e. D = DL + SDEAD, L stands for live load i.e. L=LL,
W stands for wind load and E stands for earthquake load. When these seven basic load
cases are combined accordingly considering the direction of lateral loads, we obtain, after
simplification, the following twenty-two combination cases:

But in ETABS analysis, we do not calculate last four combination cases (Combination
case 27, 28, 29 & 30).

6 CONCLUSION
All of the footings are adequate in size (in respect of soil bearing capacity)
Some of the footings are overstressed due to punching shear.
Shear walls, few columns are over-stressed for BNBC load combination.
Few beams are overstressed due to shear and torsion.
The flat slab is overstressed considering 63 psf live load.

10 DISCLAIMER
The assessment engineer made the above observations & recommendations from Core
test, NDT results & mathematical modelling of the building. We applied our best
engineering judgments. We do not bear responsibility for any deviation from the predicted
behavior of the structure caused by uncertainties of performance or calamities.

ANNEX -I
We have performed detailed rebar scanning using Ferro-Scan at Eight (8) locations to find
the reinforcement used in structural members. Among the Eight, five scans were done for
ground floor column, one scan was done for ground floor slab, and one scan was done for
third floor column and one scan for third floor slab. Also a lot of quick scan were performed
to verify the reinforcement in columns and slab.
We have checked rebar no. and diameter of columns and spacing of slab by removing
concrete cover.
We have performed concrete strength test by cutting Core (Destructive) at sixteen (16)
locations in column and slab. All the cores have been taken from different floor. After
cutting the Core, we have tested it by Universal Testing Machine at BUET lab. We found
that stone chips were used for concreting of column and slab. We found the concrete
strength is on a range from 2460 psi to 4810 psi for column and 3870 psi and 5570 psi for
slab and calculated average concrete strength is of column is 3491 psi and of slab is 4630
psi. However, considering the Guide line of ACI 562, the Equivalent Concrete strength is
2996 psi for column and 3726 psi for slab.
