PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. This Section covers the furnishing, installation and testing of washing machines,
dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers and range hood for kitchen.

B. The Contractor shall furnish all tools, materials required for the completion of all the
works as per the Contract Drawings.

quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these

B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever

1.05 SUBMITTALS

A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

1. Samples

a) Counter top, plastic laminate, 150 mm (6 in.) square.

b) Metal plate, 150 mm (6 in.) square, showing baked enamel finish, each
color required for cabinets and shelving (Casework).

c) Rubber or vinyl cove base, 150 mm (6 in.) lengths, each color.

2. Shop Drawings

a) Details of construction of cabinets and equipment, show anchorage and


plumbing and electrical connections. Wiring diagrams clearly indicating
manufacturer installed wiring and Contractor installed wiring.

3. Manufacturer's Literature and Data

a) Each item of residential equipment, instruction manuals and parts lists.

4. Manufacturer's Instructions

a) Manufacturer's installation and connection instructions.

5. Product Data

a) Indicate materials, finishes, construction, and operating features.

6. Operations and Maintenance Data

a) Manufacturer's recommended maintenance and cleaning instructions.

7. Warranty

a) Submit copy of specified warranty.

1.06 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.

B. Name and qualification of the person in-charge of the quality control on site.

C. All procedures of quality control at construction stage, at delivery and store of


material, and at final stage of construction.

D. Internal Quality Control

1. Checking supplies, test certificates, compliance certificate for all delivered


items.

2. Checking supplied items for completeness and compliance to specifications


and approved materials submittals.

3. Checking supplied items to match electrical requirement at site.

4. Checking proper storage of material and equipment.

E. External Quality Control

1. External test required for document submittals shall be performed by accepted


laboratories under Contractor’s responsibility. Costs of these services shall be
paid by the Contractor.

2. The work in progress will be inspected, and materials, equipment and


procedures shall be evaluated for quality and acceptability by the Royal
Commission, as designated in the Contract Documents.

3. The Contractor shall permit and facilitate access of the Royal Commission
representatives to the construction sites, and the performance of all activities
for quality assurances.

F. Source Quality Control

1. All materials shall be sampled and tested at the source.

G. Quality Assurance

1. Manufacturer/Fabricator Qualifications

a) Fabricator shall have a minimum of 5 consecutive years fabricating work


of similar quality and scope.

b) Must have a demonstrated track record of doing satisfactory work on

time.

2. Installer Qualifications

a) Authorized and trained by manufacturer/fabricator.

3. Industry Standard

a) The “Quality Standards” of the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI)


shall apply, and by reference, are made part of this Specification. Any
reference to Economy, Custom, or Premium in this Specification is
defined in the latest edition of the AWI “Quality Standards.”

4. Any item not given a specific quality grade shall be “Custom Grade” as defined
in the latest edition of the AWI “Quality Standards.”

5. Field Dimensions

a) Manufacturer/Fabricator shall be responsible for details and dimensions


not controlled by job conditions. All required field measurements and
conditions beyond his control must be indicated on the Shop Drawings.
Manufacturer and Contractor shall coordinate to establish and maintain
these field dimensions.

6. Construct cabinet work complying with requirements of the Uniform Federal


Accessibility Standard (UFAS).

1.07 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Royal Commission Regulations

a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

3. Contractor

a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal


Commission.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be
employed throughout.

1.08 SITE CONDITION

A. Temperature and Humidity Requirements

1. Maintain ambient temperature between 12.8 and 26.7°C (55 and 80°F) and
relative humidity between 30 and 60% for 48 hours prior to, and during
fabricating, installing and finishing cabinet work.

1.09 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:

1. Deliver equipment, individually, factory packaged and protected. Label with


manufacturer's name, product brand name, and model number, complete with
labels and instructions for handling, storing, unpacking, protecting, and
installing. Do not deliver units until utility rough-in is complete, and construction
in area where unit is installed is substantially complete and ready for
installation.

2. Store materials in their original undamaged packages and containers, inside a


well-ventilated area protected from weather, moisture, soiling, extreme
temperatures, and humidity.

3. Transport and handle products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions,


using means and methods that will prevent damage, deterioration and loss,
including theft.

4. Schedule product delivery to minimize long-term storage at Project site, and


prevent overcrowding of construction spaces.

5. Coordinate product delivery with installation schedule to assure minimum


holding time for items that are flammable, hazardous, easily damaged, or
sensitive to deterioration, theft, and other losses.

6. Promptly inspect shipments to ensure that products comply with project


requirements, quantities are correct, products are undamaged, and properly
protected.

7. Store and protect products in accordance with manufacturers' published


instructions, with seals and labels intact and legible.

8. Store products subject to damage by elements above ground, under cover in


weathertight enclosure, with ventilation adequate to prevent condensation.
Maintain temperature and humidity within range required by manufacturer's
published instructions.

9. For exterior storage of fabricated products, place on sloped supports, above


ground.

10. Provide off-site storage and protection when Project site does not permit on-

site storage or protection.

11. Cover products subject to deterioration with impervious sheet covering.


Provide ventilation to avoid condensation or potential degradation of product.

12. Store loose granular materials on solid flat surfaces in a well-drained area.
Prevent mixing with foreign matter.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

2.02 WASHING MACHINE

A. Description

1. Wash chamber with loading tracks to accommodate interchangeable headers.

B. Construction

1. Welded stainless-steel framing, housing, chamber, and tank. Insulated to


reduce heat and sound transfer.

C. Door

1. Hinged fold-down type or vertical-lift type. With interlock that prevents


operation of machine except when door is securely closed.

D. Cycles

1. Automatically controlled wash, rinse, and final-rinse cycles that are re-
circulated and dumped to waste under pump pressure. For each cycle, equip
with adjustable timer and dial or digital pressure gage, located at control panel.

E. Mineral-Free-Water System

1. Automatically controlled and pressurized with storage tank, and dial or digital
pressure gage, located at control panel.

F. Steam Coil

1. Stainless steel located in wash tank and controlled by adjustable variable


temperature thermostat, with indicating thermometer calibrated to 116°C
(240°F).

G. Steam Booster Heater

1. Type that does not mix steam with water; that produces 44°C (80°F)
temperature increase in range from 43 to 88°C (109 to 190°F).

H. Thermometer

1. Dial or digital that indicates solution temperature; located at control panel.

2.03 RESIDENTIAL WASHER DRYERS

A. Description

1. The washer dryer units shall be frugal in their use of energy, water, detergent
and space. Water dryers shall be connected to a single 20 mm (¾ in.) faucet, if
needed, by using the special connector. The connector ensures that equal
water pressure enters the machine through both water inlet valves.

B. Capacity: 117.6 kg/m3 (14 lb/1.92 ft3).

C. Electrical: 127 V, 60 Hz, 12.8 A.

D. Main Motor: 300/900 W.

E. Wash Settings: 9.

F. Wash/Rinse Settings: 7.

G. Spin Speed: 800 rpm.

H. Heating Element: 1300 W.

I. Dryer Heat Settings: Auto.

J. Drying Time: 0 to 120 minutes.

K. Dryer Ventilation: Vented (4 in.).

L. Tub and Drum: Stainless steel.

2.04 RANGE HOOD

A. Range Hood

1. Electric, cabinet mounted, exhausted directly to exterior, 2 level light setting,


2 speed fan, minimum 117 L/s (2350 cfm), less than 1 sone at normal speed.
Air and sound ratings certified by UL.

B. UL 858, vented or nonvented, permanent washable filter, top or rear exhaust, and
eye level controls.

C. One piece fan housings, seamless, spun heavy gage aluminum without welding.

D. Fans and installation shall be in accordance with ANSI/NFPA Standard 96.

E. Fans shall be designed to keep the motor out of airstream, and should be effectively
cooled.

F. Fans shall have centrifugal wheels with backward inclined blades.

G. Grease from kitchen exhaust hoods shall be collected within the fan, and drained at a
single point in the fan base into a collection box.

H. Exhauster shall be weatherproof, and have adequate drainage of the elements.

I. Adjustable motor pulleys and heavy-duty ball bearings.

J. Motor shall be of the explosion proof, totally enclosed and of two speeds.

K. Exhauster shall be equipped with gravity backdraft damper, electric motorized


dampers, and aluminum bird screen.

2.05 REFRIGERATORS

A. UL 250, refrigerator with frostproof on top, side by side freezer, minimum 0.41 m3
(14.6 ft3), automatic defrosting, 2 vegetable bottom baskets, 4 adjustable shelves,
2 door shelves and minimum 12 egg container in the door, separate interior shelves,
multiple door shelves, and 2 ice trays.

B. For refrigerator with top freezer, provide reversible left swing and right swing
interchangeable doors.

C. Provide 4 fixed rollers or adjustable leg levelers.

2.06 DISH WASHERS

A. Dishwasher

1. Electric, under counter, electronic controls, Energy Star listed. Suitable for
under counter installation with cabinetwork by simple removal of adjustable
feet.

B. Dishwasher shall be under counter type and comply with requirements of


FS A-A-2559, or UL 921, UL 749, with detergent dispenser.

C. Provide automatic control to cycle machine through wash, rinse, dry or heat, and stop
phases.

D. Include manual setting to repeat or skip phases of cycle.

E. Equip machine with safety switch which automatically stops spraying action when
door is open.

F. For heavy duty dishwasher, provide stainless-steel commercial grade with


approximately 300 dish capacity per hour and 540 glasses per hour ratings. For
medium duty dishwasher, provide household grade, with minimum 500 W input for
drying dishes.

2.07 CABINET FABRICATION

A. Exposed soffits of wall hung cabinets and toe spaces of bases shall be closed flush.

B. Base units with sinks shall have 1 piece, lowered backs. Base units with doors shall
have removable backs. Base units with drawers do not require backs.

C. Equipment shall be welded assembly of sheet steel. Wall and base cabinets shall
have enclosed uprights or posts, and shall include sides, backs, bottoms, soffits,
ceilings, headers and rails, all assembled to form integral units. Fabricate wall and
base cabinets with finished end panels.

D. Minimum thickness of sheet steel shall be as follows:

1. 0.76 mm (22 gage); drawer fronts, backs and bodies.

2. Door interior panels.

3. Tops, ends, backs, shelves and bottoms.

4. Soffits and ceilings.

5. 0.91 mm (20 gage): Door exterior panels and all other metal.

6. 1.21 mm (18 gage): Gussets and cross rails.

7. 1.52 mm (16 gage): Drawer slides or runs.

E. Doors

1. Hollow metal type with sound deadening core.

a) Fabricate flush metal doors of 2 panels formed into pans with corners
welded and ground smooth.

b) Provide 1.90 mm (14 gage) thick sheet steel hinge reinforcement inside
doors and cabinets that have hinged doors.

F. Drawers

1. Drawer fronts shall be flush hollow metal type with sound deadening core.
Bodies shall be formed of 1 piece sheet steel. Drawer fronts shall have top
corners welded and ground smooth. Provide reinforcement for rubber bumpers
at each side of drawer head to cushion closing.

a) Steel slides or runs for drawers shall have slides or runs welded to
exterior drawer sides, and welded or permanently attached to cabinet
sides. Equip slides or runs with stops to prevent involuntary withdrawal.

G. Bases

1. Provide integral channel shaped base frames securely reinforced with gussets
and channels to support kitchen equipment, except those units having integral
bases. Channel base shall provide toe space at front, and complete with front,
back and ends, closed flush.

a) Install premolded rubber or vinyl base, with close flush joints and set
with adhesive. Remove adhesive from exposed surface. Install base on
cabinets where shown, after units have been accurately leveled. Rub
base to glossy finish.

H. Shelves

1. Flange shelves down 19 mm (¾ in.) on all edges, with front and bearing edges
flanged back 13 mm (½ in.). Shelves shall be adjustable.

I. Hardware

1. As recommended by manufacturer, except as specified below:

a) Hinged Doors
1) Each door shall have 1 bar type pull to match drawer pulls.
2) Provide concealed hinges in cabinet doors.

b) Drawers
1) Shall ride on steel ball bearing or nylon roller type suspension
guides, having positive stops to prevent accidental removal when
extended, but designed to permit removal when desired. Provide
1 bar type pull on each drawer.

c) Shelf Supports
1) Provide 2 adjustable supports, conforming to ANSI A156.9,
applied on each side of cabinets, where adjustable shelves are
designated.

J. Counter Tops

1. Counter tops and splashbacks shall be plastic laminate factory glued to either
a plywood or particleboard (ANSI A208.1) core. Counter tops and splashbacks
shall be 19 mm (¾ in.) thick. Splash-backs shall be secured to counter tops
with concealed metal fastenings, and with contact surfaces set in waterproof
glue. Provide cut-outs for hot and cold water faucets.

K. Sink Bowls

1. Fabricate sink bowls of 1 piece, minimum 1.21 mm thick (18 gage), Type 302,
stainless steel. ASME A112.19.3M Kitchen sinks, 625 x 560 mm (25 x 22 in.),
self rimming, satin finish. Drill and punch sinks at bottom to receive
connections. Spray underside with fire resistant, sound-deadening material.

L. Fittings

1. Provide plumbing trim and fittings to comply with the following:

a) Faucets, ASME A112.18.1M single lever, ledge back mounted,


chromium plated brass with 250 mm (10 in.) cast brass swing-spout and
10 L/m (2.75 gpm) laminar flow control end trim for spout.

b) Drain, Heavy gage stainless steel body with removable stainless steel
conical strainer plate.

c) Traps, cast copper alloy, 38 x 38 mm (1½ x 1½ in.) by 1.37 mm


(17 gage) P-trap with cleanout plug, continuous drain with wall
connection and set-screw escutcheon.

M. Sink Unit Disposal

1. Disposal unit for sink shall be domestic type designed to dispose of all types of
food waste by means of grinding and flushing into the sanitary sewer. Water to
be provided from sink faucet.

a) Disposal unit shall be motor driven, and hung directly from sink outlet

and connected into sink waste pipe. Inlet opening shall fit into 88 mm
(3½ in.) sink outlet, and shall be provided with a sink waste plug. Waste
outlet shall be for slip joint connection to a 38 mm (1½ in.), or larger,
plumbing trap.

b) Disposal unit shall be installed complete with all valves, switches and
other accessories as recommended by the manufacturer's instruction.

N. Finish exposed surfaces as follows:

1. Steel

a) Clean exterior and interior surfaces free of foreign matter, oil and
grease; apply a prime coat of paint; and a finish coat of baked-on
enamel.

2. Stainless Steel

a) Mechanical finish No. 4 in accordance with NAAMM Metal Finishes


Manual.

3. High Pressure Plastic Laminate

a) Industry Standard
1) NEMA LD-3.

b) Color and Texture


1) As selected by the Royal Commission from manufacturer’s
standard palette.

4. Low Pressure Plastic Laminate

a) Industry Standard
1) Polyester or melamine laminate.

a) Factory Cured Wet Film Finish


2) Electron beam cured acrylic finish, coordinated with exterior
cabinet color.

b) Backing sheet on bottom of plastic covered wood tops.

c) Color and finish of plastic laminate shall be as per interior/exterior


finishes, materials and finish schedules.

O. Sheet Steel

1. Federal Specifications; QQ-S-698, cold rolled, commercial quality.

P. Stainless Steel

1. Straight (for carpet), cove (for resilient floor); 100 mm (4 in.) high, 3 mm (1/8 in.)
thick; flexible to conform to irregularities in walls, partitions and floors.

S. Plumbing Fixtures

1. ANSI A112.19 except die-cast zinc-alloy material is not acceptable.

T. Plywood

1. Standard product, not less than 5 ply.

U. Adhesive (For Rubber Molding)

1. Fed. Spec. A-A-1936A.

V. Rubber Molding

1. Solid molded, neoprene rubber, free from porosity and having Shore A
hardness of 60 to 70. Neither sponge or expanded cellular rubber are
acceptable.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 PREPARATION

A. Verification of Conditions

1. Verify that field measurements, surfaces, substrates and conditions are as


required, and ready to receive work.

2. Verify that equipment can be installed complying with the original design and
referenced standards.

3. Examine roughed-in plumbing, mechanical, and electrical services to verify


actual locations of piping connections prior to installation.

4. Accomplish any special coordination or preparation to equipment required for


installation, in accordance with manufacturer’s requirement.

B. Field Verification

1. Blocking and Backing

a) Verify that blocking and backing necessary for cabinet support is in


place.

2. Utilities and Appliance Services

a) Verify that special cutouts, blockouts, and service are in place to serve
appliances and equipment.

3. Room Dimensions

a) Verify room size prior to fabrication.

3.02 EXAMINATION

A. Report in writing to the Royal Commission prevailing conditions that will adversely
affect satisfactory execution of the work. Do not proceed with work until
unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

B. By beginning work, the Contractor accepts conditions and assumes responsibility for
correcting unsuitable conditions encountered, at no additional cost to the Royal
Commission.

3.03 COORDINATION

A. Before installation, check the location and fittings for services to the equipment.

B. Coordinate this work with plumbing and electrical trades.

C. Walls and floors shall be finished as scheduled before equipment is installed.

RESIDENTIAL EQUIPMENT

3.04 INSTALLATION

A. Install equipment level and plumb, according to manufacturer’s rough-in drawings


and referenced standards.

B. Securely anchor components and appliances to supporting cabinets or counter tops


with concealed fasteners.

C. Verify that clearances are adequate to properly and freely operate appliances.

D. Coordinate with other trades for plumbing, mechanical and electrical service
connections.

E. Where cabinetwork abuts other work, scribe and cut for accurate fit, provide hairline
joints less than 1.6 mm (1/16 in.).

F. Make penetration cutouts required by field conditions.

G. When required for wire access to equipment, cut round openings for wire
penetrations, and install color matching grommets to cover openings.

H. Shim cabinets with concealed shims.

I. Anchor cabinets and counter tops to furring, studs and blocking, with concealed
countersunk fasteners.

J. Anchor wall mounted cabinets with concealed continuous cleats, screwed to cabinets
and studs or solid blocking.

K. Anchor to wall using No. 8 wood screws at 400 mm (16 in.) on center, with not less
than 2 anchors per cabinet section.

3.05 CLOSURE AND ANCHORAGE

A. Anchorage

1. Where units abut end to end, anchor together at top and bottom of front and
back, with bolts placed inconspicuously inside.

B. Closures

1. Seal openings, 6 mm (¼ in.) wide or less, between equipment and walls flush
with caulking compound specified in SECTION 07920. Except where other
type fillers are required, close openings larger than 6 mm (¼ in.) wide with
either flat 1.21 mm (18 gage) thick steel strips, scribed to require contours; or
0.91 mm (20 gage) thick machine formed fillers, with returns and secured with
sheet metal screws to tubular or channel members of cabinets, or with bolts
where exposed on inside of equipment.

a) Paint caulking, closures, and fillers (except stainless steel fillers) same

b) Fasten units to wall with 6 mm (¼ in.) toggle bolts or equivalent


fasteners, or as detailed on drawings or approved Shop Drawings. Do
not secure cabinet to wood ground strips.

3.06 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Test, adjust, and verify operation of each appliance and component. Repair or
replace any item found to be defective or operating below rated capacity.

3.07 ADJUSTING, CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Check that operating parts work freely and fit neatly. Adjust and lubricate hardware
and moving parts as necessary.

B. Remove protective coverings, if any, and clean equipment following installation.

C. Repair or replace damaged parts, dents, buckles, abrasions and other defects
affecting appearance or serviceability.

D. Adjust operating hardware for smooth quiet operation.

E. Repair or replace damaged or defective work.

F. Touch up finish as required to meet AWI tolerances.

G. Adjust hinges to center doors in opening, and provide uniform margins between
doors.

H. Flush supply piping and traps and clean strainers.
