PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. Furnish and install the darkroom and photographic equipment areas and systems
based on the recommendation of the approved manufacturer. Selections and
quantities of equipment, materials and accessories shall comprise all the items
normally used for complete operation of the system.

1.02 SECTION INCLUDES

A. This Specification covers:

1. Darkroom equipment including photo film developing, printing and enlarging


facilities.

2. Photographic equipment including photographic studio, projection and viewing


facilities.

1.04 REFERENCES

A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials and products. In case of conflict between these standards and
the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever
applicable. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment conforming to
one group of codes and standards.

1.05 SUBMITTALS

A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

1. Detailed dimensioned Shop Drawings.

2. Manufacturer’s data sheets shall include:

a) Indication of the necessary installation dimensions, weights and


materials.

b) Illustrations and descriptions of photographic lab equipment.

c) Optional auxiliary equipment and controls that will be included for the
project.

3. Operation and Maintenance Manuals.

4. Factory test reports.

5. Certificate of compliance stating that the materials used conform to all


requirements of this Specification.

6. A list of manufacturers of all items indicated for under this Specification.

7. Copies of catalogs of all equipment to be furnished.

8. Manufacturers suggested list of 2 years spare parts.

B. After installation of the equipment, the Contractor shall submit the following:

1. As-built drawings of complete system.

2. Field test reports after completion of testing and commissioning.

1.06 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with

SECTION 01450.

1.07 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Royal Commission Regulations

a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

3. Contractor

a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal


Commission.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be
employed throughout.

1.08 SERVICE CONDITIONS

A. All the equipment/materials installed indoor shall be suitable for continuous operation
under the following service conditions:

1. Ambient Air Temperature

a) Maximum of 40°C.

b) Minimum of 0°C.

c) Average temperature, measured over a period of 1 month, shall be at a


maximum of 35°C.

2. Relative Humidity (Average Value)

a) For a period of 24 hours, shall not exceed 95%.

b) For a period of 1 month, shall not exceed 90%.

B. All the equipment/materials installed outdoor shall be suitable for continuous


operation under the following service conditions:

1. Ambient Air Temperature

a) Maximum of 50°C.

b) Minimum of 0°C.

c) Average temperature, measured over a period of 1 month, shall be at a


maximum of 45°C.

2. Altitude shall be less than 1000 m, unless a higher altitude is specified in the
Contract Drawings.

3. Average Value of the Relative Humidity

a) For a period of 24 hours, shall not exceed 95%.

b) For a period of 1 month, shall not exceed 90%.

c) Relative humidity may be temporarily 100%.

1.09 FACTORY TESTING

A. All the equipment/material shall be tested at factory. The Contractor shall notify the
Royal Commission in writing not less than 30 days prior to the scheduled starting
date of the factory tests.

B. The Royal Commission reserves the right of deputing their representative for
witnessing the factory test.

C. Upon completion of factory test, and before shipment of the equipment/material, the
Contractor shall submit 5 certified copies of test reports not later than 10 days after
the completion of all factory tests for review and approval of the Royal Commission.

D. On arrival at site, the equipment/material shall be checked for operational and


dimensional requirements.

1.10 COORDINATION

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the proper coordination of all phases of the
work under this Contract.

B. It shall be the responsibility of the Contractor to coordinate the work and equipment
as specified herein with work to be performed and equipment to be furnished under
other Sections of the specifications in order to assure a complete and satisfactory
installation.

1.11 JOB CONDITIONS

A. The equipment shall not be delivered or installed until the following conditions have
been met:

1. Building areas are dry and unexposed to adverse weather conditions which
may damage finished materials.

2. Interior building temperatures shall be above 20°C in areas of casework and


equipment installation to permit the proper curing of epoxy sealants and
adhesives.

1.12 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:

1. Provide marking on each item in accordance with the referenced standards.


Ship each unit securely wrapped, crated and wrapped or packaged and
labeled for safe handling in shipment.

2. Materials shall be stored at building site strictly according to manufacturer’s


instruction.

3. Damage or distortion of the materials shall be avoided during handling and


shipment or transportation.

4. Damages of equipment/materials occurring during transportation or storage of


the product shall be the responsibility of the Contractor.

5. Fill in forms required by Contract Quality Manual.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

B. All darkroom equipment in this Section shall be furnished by one manufacturer


unless otherwise specifically noted.

C. Continuity and uniformity in design shall exist for all units.

2.02 DARKROOM EQUIPMENT

A. General

1. Darkroom equipment quantities and accessories shall be based from the


following:

a) Color enlarger.

b) Color film and printing processing.

c) Black and white film and printing processing.

2. Accessories shall include adjustable height tables, sinks, trays, washers,


dryers, safe-lights, timers and revolving doors.

3. The new color enlarger shall be the same as existing units for ease of
operation and maintenance.

B. Darkroom Casework

1. Exposed exterior and semi-exposed surfaces shall be decorative high


pressure laminate permanently bonded under pressure to both surfaces of a
suitable substrate.

2. Laminate shall have low luster and shall be chosen from the factory’s standard
selection.

3. All exterior and interior surfaces shall be able to be cleaned with soap and
water.

4. All cabinets shall be manufactured with hinged doors, drawers and face
panels.

5. Shelves shall be adjustable and furnished with shelf clips capable of securing
the shelf in a fixed position. Easy access to adjustable shelves shall be
maintained.

C. Revolving Door

1. The revolving door shall be two-way type unless otherwise specified on the
Contract Drawing.

2. The revolving door shall consist of an inner cylinder revolving inside a close
fitting outer cylinder with the required number of door openings.

3. The construction of the inner and outer cylinders shall be of a rigid high-impact
petroleum hydrocarbon polystyrene or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS).

4. The door material shall retain its original shape when accidentally struck and
shall not rust in the humid photo lab environment.

5. The inner cylinder shall revolve noiselessly and easily from one opening to the
next with no possibility of jamming or light leaks. Felt light seals shall be easily
removed without the use of special tools.

6. The floor shall be covered with a black rubber non-slip material.

7. The revolving door shall have the following features:

a) Rotation from inside and outside.

b) Suspension and lower guide bearings.

c) Wrap around aluminum handrail.

d) Finger grips around the outside.

e) Security lock.

f) Breakaway hardware.

D. Darkroom Curtain

1. Darkroom curtain material shall be inherently and permanently flame resistant


and pass the flame resistance requirements in accordance with NFPA 701.

2. The curtain track shall be made of a satin anodized aluminum designed for
surface mounting to the underside of the ceiling.

2.03 PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIO, PROJECTION AND VIEWING EQUIPMENT AND


FACILITIES

A. Photographic studio and projection/viewing room shall be minimum 6 x 8 m in size.

B. Photographic Studio Accessories

1. Accessories for the photographic studio shall be based on the following:

a) 3 x 3 m projection screen, wall hung.

b) 3 x 3 m projection screen, with tripod stand.

c) Studio lights, tungsten/daylight quarts balanced, with stands.

d) Studio lights, electronic flash, with stands.

e) Studio light umbrellas, 1220 mm diameter with stand.

f) 3 x 3 m (approximate) front projection screen with special two-way


mirror (with stand) to mount above projection and in front of camera for
background scene shooting.

g) Quantities of the above accessories shall be as specified in the Contract


Document.

2. The design of photographic studio room shall provide maximum flexibility for
the activities anticipated.

C. Sink Unit

1. Each sink unit shall be completely assembled at the factory and shall consist
of sink, base cabinet and pre-piped fittings and equipment.

2. Each sink unit shall develop maximum strength and rigidity in each integral
unit.

3. Sink unit shall be fabricated with a polyester resin work surface, reinforced with
a glass fiber mat.

4. Work surface shall be resistant to corrosive effects of chemicals required in


photographic and graphic arts processing.

5. The sink unit shall be one piece molded construction with radius inside and
outside corners and bottom sloped to ensure positive drainage.

6. Each unit shall be factory pre-plumed to meet specific processing


requirements. If heating and/or cooling devices are required, they shall be
factory pre-set to accomplish the required process.

7. Each unit cabinet or stand shall be equipped with 4 or more adjustable leveling
legs as required to properly support and level each individual unit.

8. Cabinet finishes shall be selected from the manufacture’s standard offering.

D. Traps and Pipes

1. Pipe traps with clean out plugs and fittings shall be chemical-resisting. The
clean out plug shall be removable without tools.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 GENERAL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for coordinating the installation of the darkroom
equipment and photographic studio room to ensure complete and fully operational
immediate use once a facility is complete.

B. The Contractor shall be responsible for obtaining any required permits.

C. The Contractor shall be responsible for providing operating and supervisory


personnel with adequate knowledge and experience. All work shall be done in a
workmanlike manner by competent personnel under the supervision of expert
personnel.

D. A set of working drawings shall be at the site at all times during the works. All work
shall be subject to acceptance by the Royal Commission. Deviations from the
Contract Drawings/Document and specifications shall not be permitted, except upon
prior written permission of the Royal Commission.

E. The Contractor shall install laboratory darkroom equipment and photographic


facilities in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, including
recommended operating and servicing clearances.

F. All equipment and system installation and activation work shall be performed
according to the latest manufacturing technology and the Royal Commission rules
and regulation.

G. During the construction period, the Contractor shall be responsible for protecting
equipment from dirt, water, and chemical or mechanical injury.

3.02 INSTALLATION OF REVOLVING DARKROOM DOOR

A. Doors shall be installed on top of finished floor in accordance with manufacturer’s


printed instructions.

B. Complete assembly shall be light-proof. Sealant shall be used to bed components


and seal cracks. The use of tape to cover cracks shall not be permitted.

3.03 INSTALLATION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC FACILITIES

A. The design of photographic facilities shall be based on the recommendations of


agencies specializing in the design, manufacture and use of the type of system
specified herein.

B. The installation shall be as specified in par. 3.01 E.

3.04 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. The Contractor shall:

1. Repair or remove and replace defective work upon completion of installation.

2. Clean equipment, touches up as required, and removes and refinishes


damaged or soiled areas.

3. Be responsible for protecting equipment from dirt, water, and chemical or


mechanical injury during remainder of construction period.

4. Clean equipment as required to produce ready-for-use condition after


completion of the work.

3.05 TESTING AND COMMISSIONING

A. General

1. The Contractor shall carry out all site tests in accordance with approved test
procedures to ensure that the equipment and related accessories comply with
this Specification and operational requirements. All tests shall be subject to
witnessing by the Royal Commission’s representative.

2. At least 4 weeks prior to schedule tests, the Contractor shall submit to the
Royal Commission an outline of the plan and procedures to be used in
performing the site inspection and site tests. This shall include a brief
description of the test equipment, reference drawings, proposed tests and
procedure, test sheets, calculations, reference drawings and
minimum/maximum test and performance values in conformance with the
specification and acceptability of the equipment and acceptability of the
installation.

3. All testing equipment shall be calibrated by approved authorities and


calibration certificate shall be provided to the Royal Commission for review and
approval.

4. Upon completion of installation and prior to final acceptance, each component


of each system shall be tested to the complete satisfaction of the Royal
Commission. The Contractor shall provide all test instrumentation, equipment
and accessories necessary for demonstration and putting the equipment in to
operation before commissioning.

5. Upon completion of all testing, the Contractor shall submit 5 copies of certified
reports attesting that each test has been performed in accordance with the
approved test procedures. The report for each test shall include the name of
the person in-charge of the test and the date of performance. All factory and
field test reports shall be included in Operation and Maintenance Manual.

6. Care shall be taken that the test apparatus does not damage the equipment or
other related accessories during the testing.
