Rationale:
This course is intended for Health Science students.
General objectives:
By the end of this course, Health sciences students should be able to:
1- Understand the role played by different Microorganisms in causation of diseases in
man.
2- Understand the relationship between environment and transmission of infectious
diseases.
3- Know how to prevent the infections caused by Microorganisms.
Specific objectives:
By the end of this course Health students should be able to:
1- Understand the structure, classification of bacteria, reproduction and taxonomy of
bacteria.
2- Understand the structure, classification, replication of viruses.
3- Understand the structure, classification, replication of fungi.
4- Understand the characteristic features, developmental stages and classification of
parasites.
5- Know the main properties of intestinal protozoa and intestinal flagellates.
6- Know the general characters, species, lifecycle, pathogenicity of leishmania.
7- Know the cycle development, transmission types, pathogenicity and clinical picture
of trypanosomal infection.
8- Understand the diseases caused by DNA viruses and RNA viruses.
9- Know superficial , cutaneous , subcutaneous and opportunistic Mycosis
10- Know the systemic infections caused by different microorganisms.
11- know the Nosocomial infections

Evaluation:
-Final examinations run by internal examiners
-Evaluation consists of:
 MCQs: 40%
 Long assays: 30%
 Short questions: 20%

 Midterm: 20%.

 Oral: 20%
 Course Work : 10%

Lectures:
-Week 1: Introduction of Microbiology, History, Importance of Microorganisms.
-Week 2: Bacteria.
-Week 3: Viruses
-Week 4: Fungi.
- Week 5: parasites.
-Week 6: Normal Flora.
-Week 7: Microbial growth.
-Week 8: Inhibiting Microbial growth in vetro (Sterilization and disinfection).
-Week 9: Inhibiting Microbial growth in vivo (Antibiotics)
-Week 10: Pathogenesis of infections.
-Week 11: Nosocomial infections
-Week 12: Respiratory infections
-Week 13: Foodborne and waterborne infections
-Week 14: Skin infections
-Week 15: Sexual transmitted infections (STDs)
-Week 16: Revision

Practicals:
 Lab 1: Introduction to Microbiology laboratory (Orientation)
 Lab 2: Gram staining
 Lab 3: Autoclaving.
 Lab 4: The use of Hot air oven
 Lab 5: Pasteurization of Milk
 Lab 6: Fermentation
 Lab 7: Yogurt production
