aminoglycoside antibiotic
Gentamicin is widely used in the treatment of severe infections. It is active against many strains of Gramnegative bacteria and Streptococus aureus.
History of hypersensitivity to or toxic reaction with any aminoglycoside antibiotic Safe use during pregnancy (category C) or lactation is not established
Obtain renal function studies, CBC and appropriate specimens for culture.
Assess for tinnitus, vertigo, or hearing GASTROINTESTINAL: loses because nausea and persistently vomiting increasing Hepatomegaly gentamicin levels splenomegaly have been associated with 8th CN HEMATOLOGIC: dysfunction. anemia Instruct patients to HYPERSENSITIVITY consume adequate rash fluids to prevent burning sensation of dehydration. skin joint pains Encourage patient to report any hearing Nephrotoxicity and visual impairments. Ototoxicity Avoid vaccinations during treatment Identify wound changes that require medical attention (pain, swelling, increased drainage and odor).

Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, producing peripherally mediated analgesia Also has an antipyretic and antiinflammatory property.
Hypersensitivity Cross-sensitivity with other NSAIDs Known alcohol intolerance Use cautiously in: 1) History of GI bleeding 2) Renal impairment (dosage reduction may be required) 3) Cardiovascular disease
CNS: drowsiness dizziness headache RESPIRATORY: asthma dyspnea CARDIOVASCULAR: edema pallor vasodilation GASTROINTESTINAL: GI Bleeding abnormal taste diarrhea dry mouth dyspepsia GI pain nausea GENITOURINARY: oliguria renal toxicity urinary frequency HEMATOLOGIC: prolonged bleeding time allergic reaction anaphylaxis
Assess pain (note type, location, and intensity) prior to and 1-2 hr following administration. Assess hydration status. Instruct patients not to exceed prescribed dosage. May take with milk or food if stomach upset occurs. Ketorolac therapy should always be given initially by the IM or IV route. Oral therapy should be used only as a continuation of parenteral therapy. Caution patient to avoid use of alcohol, aspirin, NSAIDs, acetaminophen.
Advice patient to consult if rash, itching, visual disturbances, tinnitus, weight gain, edema, black stools, persistent headache occur. Avoid activities that require mental alertness
