Since when has afternoon tea been an

English tradition and how did this tradition
start? Afternoon tea became popular at the
end of the 18th century. Before then, people
in England had two meals a day. They ate
bread and beef for breakfast and then they
had a big dinner in the evening. Dinner
usually included soup, fish, chicken, potatoes,
vegetables and something sweet to end the
meal.

Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, often

complained about feeling hungry in the
afternoon. So one day, she decided to invite
some friends to her summer castle for an
extra meal – afternoon tea. There were small
cakes, sandwiches, sweets and of course, tea
to drink. Everyone liked this idea and when
the Duchess moved to London for the winter,
she continued inviting people to tea around
five o’clock every afternoon. Other ladies
quickly started inviting their friends for tea and
this is how the tradition of afternoon tea
started in England.
