CRUISE VISUAL APPROACH & LANDING

Estimate your TOD based on your Cruise FL. approach @ 1.000 ft above destination altitude
Descent should begin approximately at a distance of
@ 8 - 7 NM to go
3 NM per 1.000 ft above destinations altitude, if you
reduce speed to ~ 120 KIAS
want to fly a 3° glidepath.
If your are flying IFR with ATC: @ Downwind Leg or 6 - 4 NM to go
If ATC is not giving you clearance to descent shortly Landing Gear → DOWN
(3-5 Minutes) after your TOD, then most likely the Flaps → SET 2 (25°)
STAR or Approach is broken. Start to descend then reduce speed to ~ 80 - 90 KIAS (2.700 / 3.800 lbs)
anyways and ignore ATC if necessary.
@ Base Leg or 3-2 NM to go
Flaps → SET FULL (40°)
DESCENT – CHECKLIST sinkrate ~ 400-800 fpm
speed on final ~ 65 - 75 KIAS (2.700 / 3.800 lbs)
If your are flying IFR with ATC: @ Runway Treshold / Obstacles Clear:
Due to a lot of wrong STAR and Approach altitudes Throttle → IDLE
in MS FS database, you are advised to constantly slowly start to flare
check your altitude during descent and approach
even if you were given clearance to descend at the
TOD. For a standard 3° glidepath approach, make ILS APPROACH & LANDING
sure you are not significantly higher at a given point,
than the altitude of the destination plus a 1.000 ft per approach @ 3.000 ft above destination altitude or
3 NM to go. Example: If you have 21 NM to go, use proper procedure altitude
destination is at sea level and you are at an altitude
@ 12 - 10 NM to go
of 12.000 ft, you are too high. you should be around
reduce speed to ~ 120 KIAS
7.000 ft
@ 1 Dot below Glideslope
If you are flying a GPS flightplan with procedures
Landing Gear → DOWN
and are using the GNS 530 MOD :
Flaps → SET 2 (25°)
Make sure to activate the approach before the first
reduce speed to ~ 80 - 90 KIAS (2.700 / 3.800 lbs)
waypoint of the approach by pressing PROC,
sinkrate for 3° GS = 5 x Ground Speed
selecting ACTIVATE APPROACH? and pressing
ENT! @ 3-2 NM to go
Flaps → SET FULL (40°)
Throttle and Speed .................................as required
speed on final ~ 65 - 75 KIAS (2.700 / 3.800 lbs)
Sinkrate for a 3° glidepath........ ~ 5 x Ground Speed
Autopilot → OFF
Cowl Flaps.................................... ..............CLOSED
@ Runway Treshold
Mixture..........................................................AS REQ
Throttle → IDLE
@Transition Altitude slowly start to flare
Altimeter QNH....................................................SET
AFTER LANDING/TAXI – CHECKLIST
APPROACH – CHECKLIST
Flaps.........................................................RETRACT
@ ~ 15 – 10 NM to go Cowl Flaps..............................................FULL OPEN
Carburetor Heat..................................................OFF
Landing Lights.......................AS REQ (NIGHT – ON) Electric Fuel Pump..............................................OFF
Electric Fuel Pump................................................ON Landing Lights.....................................................OFF
