Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Pretty Plants Parts

Grade Level/Content Area: 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S1L1. Obtain, Evaluate, and Communicate information about
the basic needs of plants and animals
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
be able to do by the end of this lesson:
Empowered Learner – 1.6.c Students
communicate complex ideas clearly and
effectively by creating or using a variety of
digital objects such as visualizations, models, or
simulations

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Want them to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic needs of
plants. The goal is for them to develop models to identify parts of a plant- root, stem, leaf,
and flower.

Selected Instructional Software Tool:

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s): (Which level(s) will this lesson meet using this technology
tool?)

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply. (Sometimes only one option will
apply.)

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom

blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation: Write a paragraph describing how the lesson will be
implemented using the prompts as your guide:
I will start by introducing the eBook about the parts of a plant and give them the chance to
understand the goal, which will be to create a model to identify these parts. Students will
work in groups to be creative using the software, kidpix to create a plant model and defining
its parts of the plants. As a teacher, I will observe and let students be creative as possible and
feedback will be provided by analyzing the model they create and see if students were able
to identify parts correctly. To conclude this lesson, students will share their model amongst
other classmates.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
Ways to get students actively involved will be an activity where materials will be provided for
them to collaborate with their classmates to create a plant model on kidpix that includes
each of the parts discussed in the eBook. The time limit will be 30 minutes, and this gives
them 10 minutes to discuss and hear each of their groupmate’s input and brainstorm an idea
together. The remaining 20 minutes will be to create a model showing the parts- roots, stem,
leaf, and flower. While students complete the task, I will remind them of the learning goal by
having them explain to me what it is they have so far. The focus of the learning goal will show
when students are explaining the parts of the plants by each student having the chance to
show and describe one part.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): How does this tool support Engagement,
Representation or Action and Expression components of the UDL framework?
The universal design for learning is supported using the eBook and is supporting engagement
and action and expression. Engagement is supported by allowing students to be challenged
and interested because they are answering questions as a class. Students are being
challenged by having the free mind to be creative with classmates to create a model. Action
and expression are supported by allowing them to create a model to support their learning
and show the teacher the understanding of the lesson and show the goal being met.

Lesson Idea

After designing this lesson idea, how do you feel the activities you created will impact student
learning? What part of the lesson do you look forward to implementing with students?
Explain why? (2 to 3 sentences of reflection)
I feel this activity will give a universal design for learning because it meets a variety of
learning needs for students by touching up of each of their strengths, challenges, and needs. I
look forward to seeing the different project models the students created using the materials
given and to see their creativity by working with their groupmates.
