Presentation on Riot

Prediction
Presented By:
Team Leader :Rajdeep Chandra

Our understanding of the challenge
Riot is a violent disturbance of the peace by the crowd. Riots are
the results of long-held anger, broader police abuse, residential
segregation, economic inequality and racial tension. Riots directly
damage lives, property values and economic activity.

Riot prediction was and still is a very fruitful idea for the society.
Although the implementation of methods for riot prediction was
not feasible earlier due to lack of technology, but now since with
the advancement in machine learning technology, the idea for the
implementation of riot prediction method can be brought into life
and aid the society with its use. The proposed prototype will be on
a long-term project as the required cloud services need to be
developed.

Proposed Solution
Assumption: We assume the police record keeping systems, like FIR and General Diary, and the
Judiciary records to be cloud-based.
The prototype will scan the images from the police records and feed them to the cloud storage.
The data (image/text) is processed and rated on a scale. The value will be compared with the
previous online judiciary record, i.e., the case files and public news. Depending upon the cosine
similarity index, it will predict the scenario.
Objective: The main objective of this project is to predict the chances of a riot in a region based
on previous records and Artificial Intelligence.
Output: The major result of it’s implementation would be accurate and timely generation of
probability of disturbances. It would also be alerting the responsible authorities.

Predicted chances of a riot

What is the USP?
Existing Systems:

◦ A mathematical model was proposed with the aim of

exploring the spatial and temporal patterns of events in
London.

◦ The Open System Indicator (OSI) Program aims to develop

methods of automated analysis of publicly available data to
anticipate and/or detect riots and other types of social
outbreaks.

◦ After the UK riots 2011, a system named Jasmine to detect

local events was proposed to predict riots beforehand.

What is the USP? (contd…)
The reasons why this model is preferable over the other
existing riot prediction models, are:

◦ It is designed to detect disturbances of any scale, ranging from

minor tensions and thefts, to crucial ones like mob violence and
riots.
◦ The existing riot prediction models are quite expensive and
can’t be implemented largely by developing nations like India.
◦ For a nation like India, which has an intimidating population of
over 1.32 billions, the existing monitoring systems would be
slow to respond due to the huge amount of data produced by
them.

Risk, Issues and Mitigation plan
The major setbacks of this model might be listed as
under:

◦ Loss of precision due to processing of large number of images.

◦ Accessing the required data might not be legal without proper
permissions.
◦ Storing a confidential data in the cloud can be a risky affair
and might lead to cyber thefts.
◦ Computational errors while predictive and statistical analysis.

Risk, Issues and Mitigation plan (contd…)
Possible mitigation plans:

◦ Use of better batch image processing

algorithms might reduce the loss of accuracy.

◦ Localised data updation centres can be set up

or existing ones can be used to update the
servers with latest data.

Future Scope
After the successful implementation of the model too, there
is a wide scope of improvement. These might include:

◦ Development of face recognition systems to detect the

presence of severe criminals in a region and alert the
authorities about the possible threats.

◦ This project being based on current scenario needs to be

modified a bit for use after a certain span of time. The NLP
system used to extract texts from images might be removed,
since by then all the required records would be presented in
texts formats.
