1. Problem #4 A selection of slip gauges is required to build a height of 48.155 mm.
Propose the best combination of gauges using the 103-gauge set.

Solution
Slip gauges are available in standard sets in both metric and inch units.
Set of 103 pieces consists
 One piece of 1.005 mm
 49 pieces ranging from 1.01 to 1.49 mm in steps of 0.01 mm
 49 pieces ranging from 0.5 to 24.5 mm in steps of 0.5 mm
 Four pieces ranging from 25 to 100 mm in steps of 25 mm
Now from one piece of 1.005mm, we can select 1.005mm
Next, from the 49 pieces ranging from 1.01 to 1.49 mm in steps of 0.01 mm we can get
1.15mm gauge height.
Similarly from 49 pieces ranging from 0.5 to 24.5 mm in steps of 0.5 mm, 21mm gauge
height can be selected.
Finally from Four pieces ranging from 25 to 100 mm in steps of 25 mm, 25mm can be
obtained.
Hence the selection of gauges to build a height of 48.155 mm will be: 1.005mm, 1.15mm, 21mm,
and 25mm.
2. Problem #5 It is required to set a height difference of 0.45 mm to set the sine bar to a
known angle. How will you select the combination of slip gauges to set the sine bar using
a set of 56 slip gauges? (Hint: Since the required value is less than the dimension of the
minimum available gauge, it is required to select combinations on either sides of the sine
bar, so that the difference in height should give the required value.)
Solution
Since the required height cannot obtained from available rage set of 56 slip gauge, we can use
the combination of gauges.
First we select 1.0005mm gauge as it is the least count from available gauges and then subtract
0.45mm from it.
Now 1.0005 excess 0.45 by 0.5505mm.
Addition of 0.5505 mm to 1.0005 mm gives a value of 1.551 mm.
Now, for the second combination, select the 1.551 mm gauge. If the two gauges are kept on sine
bar their difference will give the required value of 0.45 mm.
3. Problem #6 for the case described in problem 4, what will be the combination of slip
gauges if two protection gauges of 1.5 mm thickness need to be used?
Solution
Some protection gauges may be used at the top and bottom for reduction of wear due to contact
between gauges and work.
Now if two protection or wear gauges of having 1.5mm thickness each are used, we need to deduct
3mm from 48.155mm height which is required to be built.
Here we required to select combination of gauges to build 45.155mm, because 3mm will be added;
it may be 1.5 mm from top and 1.5mm from the bottom.
Then in similar fashion as we did in problem # 4,
From one piece of 1.005mm, we can select 1.005mm
From the 49 pieces ranging from 1.01 to 1.49 mm in steps of 0.01 mm we can get 1.15mm
gauge height.
From 49 pieces ranging from 0.5 to 24.5 mm in steps of 0.5 mm, I can choose 22mm and
21mm gauge height.
So the complete combination of slip gauges for this problem when two 1.5 mm thick protection
are needed to be utilized will be: 1.005mm, 1.15mm, 21mm, 22mm and two 1.5mm thick
protections.
