BIOLOGY

Week 3 Lesson 1

Topic: Classification of Living things

Subtopic: The Animal Kingdom

Specific objective: Given information sheet and flow charts on the animal

kingdom, students will:

- correctly identify eight major phyla of the animal kingdom

- correctly identify the four classes of arthropods
- list at least two examples of organisms for each class of arthropods

Content

- Kingdom Animalia constitutes all animals.

- The animal kingdom is the largest among the five kingdoms
- Animals are multicellular eukaryotes
- Animals do not possess chlorophyll or a cell wall, hence the members of
the animal kingdom exhibit a heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
- Kingdom Animalia has been classified into different phyla based on their
body design or differentiation.
- The phylum arthropoda is the largest phylum in the animal kingdom and is
further divided into four (4) classes.
- The most familiar group of chordates is the vertebrates which is further
divided into five classes

Flow chart showing the major phyla within the animal kingdom
Table showing the characteristics of the eight major phyla of the animal kingdom

Phyla Characteristics

Porifera Have no definite shape; asymmetrical, no tissues or organs

Cnidaria Two- way digestive tract, stinging cells for capturing food, have no brain

Platyhelminthes The first animals to exhibit bilateral symmetry, have a primitive brain and 3 tissue
(flatworms) layers

Annelida (segmented One-way digestive system, have well-developed digestive and circulatory systems
worms)

Mollusca (soft Either have no shell, one shell, or two shells, many have hard mouthparts
bodied animals)

exoskeleton made of chitin must shed shell to grow

Echinodermata includes sea stars, brittle stars, tube feet and water vascular system

Chordata Includes fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, notochord, post-anal tail,
pharyngeal gill slits,
