Executive Summary
This report is all about the summary of my internship experience. It starts by explaining the
background of the internship hosting company Infinity Advanced Technology Solution or formerly
known as Boston Medical plc with its services. Then the report tries to discuss the four-month
stayed experiences, faced problems, addressed solutions and benefits gained through the internship
program, and finally conclusion and recommendations. The report was written according to the
format given by the department Electrical and Computer Engineering.

During my stay in the Infinity advanced Technology solution plc, i were a part of the service-
engineering department of medical equipment. The Objective of the Department is installation,
Calibration, Preventive and Corrective maintenance, and giving training on medical equipment
The tasks we executed were preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, installation,
equipment inspection, site visitation, and training. We develop essential skills and knowledge
through performing these tasks such as practical skills, theoretical skills, leadership skills, soft
skills, interpersonal skills, and work ethics. I also traveled to new places for installation purposes.
For CT scan installation, we traveled to Hossana and Dilla to their respective hospitals. For MRI
installation, we traveled to Werabe and Adama to their respective hospitals It was a good
opportunity to see a field experience of the work. We also met different hospitals, clinics, and
diagnostic centers in doing service department tasks.

By searching problems, at the time of our internship, we were able to record some of them that
were necessary and tried to give ways of problem-solving techniques used by doing two mini-
projects that are entitled as motion controlling method of the patient in MRI and remote control of
a cooling system.

INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

Figure 1.2 Specific organization structure

1.4 Overall organization workflow

The company I have joined during our internship period has its workflow and management System.
It has a strong relationship with many hospitals, clinics, medical centers, companies (those export
medical equipment and give training). This enables the company to deliver its products and fulfill
the need of customers around the country. That equipment imported has to be checked the
components one by one, assembled, refurbished, or installed. The quality control committee
checks the functionality and quality of the equipment. After that, it is distributed to concerned
wards.
1.5 Limitations and Challenges
Throughout our internship time, even if the company is well organized in many factors, we were
able to notice some limitations and we faced some challenges.
 Lack of stock: The stock they have to store imported spare parts, machines,
consumables, and others is not enough. Therefore, they are obligated to use their
workshop as a store.

4
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

 Transportation: In a time when the service engineers have got a work to do a transport is
not available most of the time. They use a ride system incorporate but still, things are not
easy when it comes to transport.

 Necessary teams dispersed: Teams like the Site preparation team have dispersed because
of some reasons and the service engineers at the time of installation are obligated to do a
reconstruction. This takes more time and money.

 Rented materials: for different purposes some installation materials are not purchased but
rented. One of the reasons is the expensiveness of the materials. Therefore, the company is
obligated to rent the same material for different sites every time they are needed.

 Delivery Delay: Whether the problem is the company itself or other cooperating
companies sometimes there is a delay in delivery. This gives a hard time in communicating
with customers.
1.6 Main products and services
There are a lot of medical equipment suppliers in Ethiopia among that Infinity advanced
technology solution is by far the one of the best and known by providing many products and
services to its customer such as: -

1.6.2 Services

Figure 1.3 Complete service solution of infinity ATS PLC

From the diagram, there are four compartments provided as one package for the customers. If we
see the installation of medical equipment as an example, the sales department is concerned with
selling the product to the customer. After the product is delivered, the site preparation engineers
will start their work. They will construct an environment to make it suitable for installation. This
may be done by adjusting the rooms, electrical installation, and other primary works. After site
preparation, service and maintenance engineers will install and monitor the equipment based on
the agreement or contract. The capacity building and education team will focus on improving the
skill of the engineers to cope with continuous changes in technology. This helps the customers for
getting a quality service. Therefore, a one-stop-shop solution encompasses the above concept. The
company can benefit its customers by forming this cycle.
The main customers of infinity are governmental and non-governmental health facilities. Some of

CHAPTER TWO
2. OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
2.1 How I get into the company
I submit a letter of internship request paper from Debre Birhan University Electrical and Computer
Engineering department to infinity advanced technology and solution plc (formerly known as
Boston medical plc). As per the request, Infinity advanced technology and solution plc agreed to
take one student to participate for four months of fifth-year first-semester schedule.
2.2 The Section of the company I have worked
During my internship program, I have been working in the company’s service department.
Technical services have 32 technical resources, a team of well-trained, experienced, and equipment
specialized Biomedical, Electrical, and Mechanical engineers. In the department, the engineers are
assigned for different medical equipment’s based on Digital imaging (CT scan, MRI, CATH LAB)
and LCS (life care solutions) like anesthesia, ventilator, patient monitor and so on,
2.3 Workflow of the section
The service department has a great task in corrective maintenance, installation, calibration,
training, and annual preventive maintenance of all medical equipment. Infinity Advanced
Technology Solutions technical services department uses an organized structure and workflow that
ensure delivery of effective and quality service to its customers. The department duties procedure
can be classified into two. This can be fieldwork outside Addis Ababa and site work in Addis
Ababa.
In the fieldwork, the engineers will travel many kilometers to install medical equipment after every
criteria and sales department work is finished. They will travel with the required tools for
installation. This was the best opportunity for me because it helped us to know the work experience
outside Addis Ababa. They will constantly report every work and challenge to the company. The
fieldwork is not only installation but also maintenance (including preventive), training, and
calibration of the components when the customers communicate with the company.
For site work in Addis Ababa, the customers will communicate with the company about the
problem that they encounter. Then the service department engineers will be ordered to maintain,
train, and calibrate the equipment. If it is preventive maintenance, the company will have an
agreement for the time of cleaning and checkup. Therefore, when the time comes the engineers
9
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

will be ordered to do their work. Installation can also be done in Addis Ababa when a customer is
available. The engineers will report any work done to the company by providing service reports or
any other informal mechanisms. I have been involved in the above tasks and it was a great
experience.
2.4 The Task executed during the internship time
Before I began my work in the company, i was introduced to the company working
environment and how my internship program is executed. Then the company prepared
a training program at pioneer diagnostic center (which is the sister company) for me
and other Biomedical students.
During my internship time, I have done a lot of tasks in the service department like
preventive Maintenance, corrective Maintenance, installation of (CT-scan, MRI, and
AC (Air conditioning), training and Some works were done in the workshop like
soldering boards, doing different PDU (Power Distribution Board) for the site
engineers and briefly see the parts of contactor and refrigerator and what was the
practical operation of different machines. AC preventive maintenance and chiller
training was given to us at the infinity workshop. This training was given not only for
the intern students but also all the engineers were taking this weekly training with us.
The training was how to install and prevent AC conditioning and Chiller. There was
only 2 engineers who are well trained in AC conditioning system. One of them was
an electrical engineer and the other was Mechanical engineer. So there was no that
much engineer power on AC conditioning. Ac machines are the back bones for CT-
scan and MRI machines. There was different Ac machines that were not working in
different hospitals which are in Addis Ababa and outside Addis Ababa. So the training
was so helpful for the engineers to do the preventing Ac conditioning by themselves..
The engineers took so much time to install the machines because at the middle must
the Ac conditioning machine be installed. But after the training the engineers saved
time in installation of City-scan and MRI.

2.4.3 Installation

CT scan Installation at Dilla University Referral Hospital

Figure 2.1 CT-scan installation

14
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

 Site preparation
There is a specification to follow for the construction work to keep the outside environment from
exposure. The weight of the gantry must also be set down in a leveled floor made from a specific
basement system. The power system starting from the power ELPA provides to the connections
we make and to the ground system including the cables must fit the specifications by the
manufacturer company and the country.

Challenges
The site entrance height wasn’t capable of letting the gantry in. Its slope wasn’t also suitable for
the dollies. So we were obligated to make a ramp and take down the door, ruin the bricks to the
distance we need it to be. After we transport to the gantry and cover it properly the
reconstruction took place to rebuild what was taken down.
The lead glass was also broken on our arrival so after we put the glass frame in the position we
were obligated to take it down, and reconstruct it again when the new lead glass arrived because
the size couldn’t fit. Then finally every construction mess was cleaned out and the walls were
repainted.
 CT- Scan pre-installation
The ground system is developed at the back of the building with three copper rods (resistance
below 2 Ω which was 1.4 Ω). A length of 2.4meter long with a 4.8 meter gap was considered
between them.
The other necessary factor to keep in mind in CT installation is the temperature and humidity
specifications. There is a given range in which every room must be kept. The air conditioner should
be installed in UPS and machine rooms [3].

Figure 2.2 PRE-installation of CT scan

15
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

After the requirements are managed and the pre-installation takes place the next thing to do is to
make sure the power system is suitable before it reaches the Power distribution board (PDB).
Power from the main power supply system in the Hospital enters the powerhouse found on the
back of the building before it goes to the UPS room. The Hospital power system has a generator
for the time of power off from ELPA and a transformer is found to regulate the voltage based on
the need. Therefore from these systems, a 3 phase line and a neutral line passing through the
powerhouse enter the UPS room. In the UPS room, you will find the main disconnect panel (A1
panel), the stabilizer, the UPS itself, and a battery cabinet.

The batteries (thirty-two (32) 12V batteries in 4 layers) were connected in series to each other from
a positive to a negative terminal and the two ends of the total 384Volts will be connected to the
UPS. This UPS helps the system by giving continuous power for the CT scan machine. Because
when light goes off it takes a time for the ups to get a power. So to make up that problem the ups
takes the power from batteries that re connected.

Figure 2.4 Gantry

PDB (power distribution board)

A three-phase power line is inserted into the PDB from the UPS room (UPS output). The PDB is
essential to distribute the power to the PDU (power distribution unit) that delivers power to the
gantry with table, console, X-ray on light, machine on light, and socket. The 3 phases are at 120
degrees that must be the same in order as the one in the UPS room.

Operator Console

The console desk was built using an instruction attached to the desk. Then the desk was placed in
the control room. The keyboard, GSCB (global scan board), media tower, and monitor were placed
on the desk.

PDU (Power distribution unit)
The PDU was placed in a suitable location near the PDB. After positioning the PDU, the top and
rear covers were opened using a flat screwdriver and Allen key. The three-phase output of the PDB
was attached to the PDU. The x-ray on light and machine on light was attached to the PDU. PDU
consists of parts where Axial, gantry, and DC power connections are made. The grounding
connection was done in the respective position.

The tapping process was done on the PDU. This process involves choosing the correct tap voltage
for the transformer. The tap voltage that is available in Ethiopia is 380V so we connected 2 and 6
terminals.

Power, ground, and interconnect cables

Considerations that were taken were keeping signal and control cables away from power cables
and power wiring, checking all connections for tightness, and checking for reasonable cable
routing.
All system cables were separated by the system component designators Each end of a system cable
has a label and may have a color near the connector to indicate the component and the jack
identifier of the component. Gantry-Blue, Table- Yellow, PDU- Red, Console Computer-Orange.
The system cable interconnection was done from one component to the other. This can be listed
as follow PDU to Room Warning Light(s), HVDC Power Cable - PDU to Gantry, HVAC Power
Cable - PDU to Gantry, LVAC Power Cable - PDU to Gantry, LVAC Power Cable - PDU To
Operator’s Console, LVAC Power Cable - Gantry to Table, Ground with PDU to Raceway,
Ground with Raceway to Console, Signal Cable - Gantry to PDU, Signal Cable - Gantry to
Console, Signal Cable (Ethernet) - Gantry to Console, Data Cable (Fiber Optic) - Gantry to
Console, and Signal Cable - Gantry to Table.

Table installation
The first step that was undertaken in table installation was moving the table to its position using
marked location (based on the templates). Using the dollies, table-leveling pads were located inside
the table in their respective positions. Socket and ratchet were used to loosen the shipping bolt. A
socket was used to lower the adjuster. The dollies assisted to lower the table until it rests
on the leveling pads using a ratchet on each end. A bubble level was used for checking the table
surface level.
After positioning the tables, the shipping dollies were removed then Laser alignment was done.
Anchor holes were drilled and the dirt was removed using a vacuum cleaner. The anchors were
installed using a hammer.

 Site preparation
It is preparing a site in a hospital or clinic for the installation of an MRI system. In particular, the
area has to be magnetically and electrically (RF) shielded and structurally reinforced to support
the weight. In magnetics, shielding refers to shielding the outside world from a magnetic field
generated by a magnet, or vice versa. The brute force way of doing this is to build a big, soft-iron
box. The more subtle approach, called active shielding is to use a magnetic measurement system
and coils in the walls surrounding the magnet to cancel the unwanted fields. Every room dimension
in the MRI system is drowned in a final drawing sent by GE [4].

RF (Radiofrequency) cage preparation

An RF cage is a conductive enclosure used to shield the inner space from electromagnetic
interference. In MR imaging, this type of structure provides radiofrequency shielding to the
scanning room to minimize the occurrence of interference-associated imaging artifacts.

The floor (that can hold 7 tons of MRI magnet) was made up of Hipocsin – waterproof, copper,
chip wood, plastic for decoration. The wall was made up of copper, fiberglass for insulation and
sound reduction, and MDF (medium-density fiberboard); ceiling construction with lights that work
on DC. RF blocking glass construction was done.
Installation procedures
1. Delivery of the superconductor magnet using shipment tools.
2. Placement of the superconductive material using the final drawing of the room.
3. One side of the room was left opened and after the delivery, it was constructed.
4. Using leveling pads, anchor bolts, magnet level, bubble level, drill, and vacuum cleaner
(for cleaning the dirt) the superconductive magnet was located in its respective location.
5. Placement of the table (DOC) using a bubble level, leveling pad, and anchor volt.

During ramping, a heater circuit is turned on causing a finite resistance to develop in resistor R.
10. Shimming
Shimming is the process by which the main magnetic field (Bo) is made more homogenous.
11. Helium filling system
Liquid helium is used to cool down the superconductive magnets coil in MRI scanners to a
temperature below 10 Kelvin. Superconductivity is a physical effect that occurs in various
materials when they are subjected to extremely low temperatures. Helium content must be above
80 percent. If it is below 40 percent quenching may occur.

12. Cooling system

AC (Air conditioning) system helps to maintain the optimum temperature of the room. The devices
in the equipment room generate heat. If the heat accumulates, it will affect the operation of the
devices. Therefore, it helps to keep the room temperature suitable for operation.

AC (Air conditioning) installation at PDC and Lancet hospital
Proper temperature is critical to the system's operation and must meet certain specifications. CT
scan rooms must maintain at a specific temperature so that their components function properly.
The AC type that was used was the split type. Split-type air conditioners are named as such because
they split the components of a traditional air conditioning system into two individual units – one
indoor and one outdoor. The outdoor unit houses the compressor and condenser components, while
the indoor unit contains the distribution and filter components.

Copper tubing that replaces the expensive ductwork in central air systems connects these two units.
This copper tubing is flexible, allowing users to easily install a split-type system without extensive
construction. These connections also provide the capability of controlling multiple indoor fans
with one outdoor unit, similar to a central air system.

Preparation of copper tubing was made which involves the usage of flaring tools to flare the copper
ends. Then it was covered with insulation. Attachment of indoor unit with the wall using drill,
fisher, screw, and screwdrivers was done. A pathway leading from the indoor unit to the outdoor
unit was made. The electrical connection of the indoor unit was done. Placement of the indoor
units was done. The placement of the outdoor units was done by constructing supportive materials
(by considering a level surface and relatively away from a crowded environment). The connection
between the indoor and outdoor unit by attaching the copper tubing and connecting cable. Using a
Vacuum pump air and moisture were removed from the system.

 Contactors
A contactor is an electromagnetic device that is used for switching an electrical power circuit on
or off. It is a multi-pole switch i.e. multiple power circuits can be controlled with single

contactor. A Contactor is considered to be a special type of relay. However, the general

difference between the relay and contactor is that the contactor is employed in applications with
higher current carrying capacity (up to 12500 A), whereas the relay is employed for lower
current applications.

Figure 2.9 contactor

Contactor – Design and Construction

The basic construction of a contactor is almost the same as a relay. It consists of the following
parts-
1. Contact: This is one of the important parts of contactor. The current carrying task of the
contactor is completed by the contacts. There are various types of contacts present in a
contactor namely, contact springs, auxiliary contacts, and power contacts. Each of them has
their own individual role to play.
2. Electromagnet: This is the most vital component of a contactor. It provides the driving force
that is required to close the contacts of the contactor.
3. Enclosure: The enclosure provides insulation and protection from personnel touching the
contacts. Both the coil or electromagnet and contacts are protected by an enclosure. These
protective enclosures are made from various materials, such as polycarbonate, polyester,
Nylon 6, Bakelite, thermosetting plastics, etc. Generally, the open-frame contactor has an
additional enclosure, which protects the device from bad weather, hazards of explosion,
dust, and oil.
4. Arc Suppressor: One of the key functionalities of a contactor is the arc excitation. AC arcs
are often easily extinguished since it passes through zero twice for each cycle. Hence arc
suppressors can do the job easily. But for DC arcs, magnetic blowouts or specially
designed arc chutes for arc extinction are necessary.

INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

Operational principle of contactor

When current passes through the contactor it excites the electromagnet or coil and an
electromagnetic field is produced due to the excitation. The magnetic field, helps the
contactor core to move the armature. The circuit between the fixed contacts and the moving
contacts is completed by a normally closed (NC) contact. This allows the current to flow
through these contacts to the load. When current is removed, de-energization occurs in the
coil and it opens the circuit. The rapid open and close action of the contactor is one of its
important features [5].
Contactors are used for high-current load applications. They are specifically designed to
control and reduce the arc produced when the heavy motor currents are interrupted. Other
than the low current contacts, they are also set up with NC (normally closed) contacts. They
can handle more than 20 Amperes current and over 100 Kilowatts power.
When a high current is passed through the contactor, the electromagnet starts to build up and
produces magnetic flux. Hence, the core of the contactor starts to wind up. This process helps
in energizing the moving contact. Thus, the moving and fixed contacts make a short circuit
and the current is passed through them to the next circuit. The electromagnetic coil draws
more current initially. But this reduces as soon as the metal core enters the coil. When the
current is removed, the coil gets de-energized and thus the contacts get open circuited.
Features of Contactors
 A contactor is a relay that is used for switching power.
 They usually handle very heavy loads like an electric motor, lighting and heating
equipment and, so on.
 Contactors are controlled by a circuit with very less power even though their output is
used for switching very high loads.
 They can vary in size from a small device to as huge as a yard depending on the loads
they have to handle.
 Like circuit breakers, they do not interrupt a short-circuit current.
 Their current and voltage breaking capacity range from a few amperes and 24 DC
volts to thousands of amperes with many kilo volts respectively.

24
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

Advantages of Contactors:
 Speed-up your projects: Simpler selection process
 Easy to install: Faster fitting by design, the construction is simple
 Protect control circuits and save space
Disadvantages of Contactors
● Coil of the contactor may burn in absence of magnetic-field. As a result the contacts won’t
close and the contactor will not function properly.
● Contacts may also weld shut which may cause the load to keep running even when there is no
control voltage which may cause unsafe machine or machine damage.
Difference between a Relay and a Contactor
Contactor and relay have different similar features, but also they have some difference. These
differences are:

 AC air conditioning
An air conditioning system is an electrical device that is purposely installed for the removal of
heat and moisture from the interior of an occupied space. It is a process that is commonly used to
achieve a more comfortable environment, basically for human [6].
Main Parts or Component of air conditioner:
It consists of the 5 main components or Parts:
1. Evaporator:
In most of the common refrigerators, evaporator coils are wound around the freezer cabinet.
Sometimes they are placed between two seats to form a freezer cabinet.
The coil has no fins due to the frosting that collects on it over a period and due to low draft by
natural convection. In frost-free refrigerators, the evaporated is finned and the air is circulated
over it by the fan. The Frost on the evaporator is melted by a very low capacity heating element.
During the cyclical cut off period of the refrigerator, the electric heater switch on the evaporator.
It is switched off before the restart of the compressor.
In this refrigerator, there is forced air circulation due to a finned evaporator and independent
compartments.
2. Compressor:
It is hermetically sealed unit with the reciprocating compressor as the most common type of
compressor. IN some large refrigerators, use of rotary or screw compressor is possible. But the
use is limited due to the high cost.
The compressor unit is mounted on the rear side of the refrigerator. The compressor motor
capacity ranges from 1/8 to 1/4 HP depending upon the size of the refrigerator.
The starting relay also has overload protection to protect the compressor motor against higher
current due to low voltage or tripling of the power supply.
3. Condenser:
In normal refrigerators, a condenser is installed on the rear side. The air circulation is by natural
convection.
In the Frost free refrigerators, the condenser tube is on the inside of the outer cabinet of the
refrigerator.
This arrangement prevents condensation on the outer cabinet in humid condition. It also allows
placing the refrigerated close to the wall.

INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

4. Expansion valve:
In this system, the capillary tube is used as an expansion device. The capillary is long due to the
large difference between condenser pressure and evaporator pressure. The capillary is sometimes
soldered on the outside of the suction line and insulated to provide liquid-suction heat exchanger.
There is a dryer strainer before the capillary tube.
5. Air Handler and Blowing Unit:
This air conditioner components work together to draw the air to the evaporator and distribute
cool air over the room. A duct system facilitates the passage of airflow in the room.

Air conditioner working principle

An ac air conditioner works on the vapor compression refrigeration cycle. There are four parts
(Expansion Valve, compressor, evaporator, condenser) and all are connected with copper or steel
tubes. The ac machine has a low boiling point -20-degree Celsius. The freezer is surrounded by
the evaporator tube. Then the liquid refrigerant is converted into vapor. The vapor is compressed
by the compressor to high pressure and temperature. The heat is rejected to the atmosphere from
the compressor from vapor to liquid. It passes through the expansion valve and moves to the
evaporator, the cycle is repeated. It cools down the air inside the conditioning machine.
 Star-delta starting method of motors
Most induction motors are started directly on line, but when a very large motors are started that
way, they cause a disturbance of voltage on the supply lines due to large starting current surges.
To limit the starting current surge, large induction motors are started at reduced voltage and then
have full supply voltage reconnected when they run up to near rotated speed.
So in order to reduce the starting voltage we use star-delta starting method [7].
Working principle of star-delta starter
This is the reduced voltage starting method. Voltage reduction during star-delta starting is
achieved by physically reconfiguring the motor windings as illustrated in the figure below.
During starting the motor windings are connected in star configuration and this reduces the
voltage across each winding 3. This also reduces the torque by a factor of three.
After a period of time the winding are reconfigured as delta and the motor runs normally. The
Star/Delta starter is manufactured from three contactors, a timer and a thermal overload. The

27
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

contactors are smaller than the single contactor used in a Direct on Line starter as they are
controlling winding currents only. The currents through the winding are 1/root 3 (58%) of the
current in the line.
There are two contactors that are close during run, often referred to as the main contractor and
the delta contactor. These are AC3 rated at 58% of the current rating of the motor. The third
contactor is the star contactor and that only carries star current while the motor is connected in
star.
Star-Delta Starter consists of the following units
● Contactors (Main, star and delta contactors).
● Time Relay.
● Three-pole thermal overcurrent release.
● Fuse elements or automatic cut-outs for the main circuit.
● Fuse element or automatic cut-out for the control circuit.
Power Circuit of Star-Delta Starter
In operation, the Main Contactor ( KM3) and the Star Contactor ( KM1) are closed initially, and
then after a period of time, the star contactor is opened, and then the delta contactor ( KM2) is
closed. The control of the contactors is by the timer ( K1T) built into the starter..

INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

Control circuit of Star-Delta starter

Figure 2.11 Control circuit of star-delta

The ON push button starts the circuit by initially energizing Star Contactor Coil (KM1) of star
circuit and Timer Coil (KT) circuit. When Star Contactor Coil (KM1) energized, Star Main and
Auxiliary contactor change its position from NO to NC.
When Star Auxiliary Contactor (1) (which is placed on Main Contactor coil circuit ) become
NO to NC it’s complete The Circuit of Main contactor Coil (KM3) so Main Contactor Coil
energized and Main Contactor’s Main and Auxiliary Contactor Change its Position from NO
to NC. This sequence happens in a friction of time.
After pushing the ON push button switch, the auxiliary contact of the main contactor coil (2)
which is connected in parallel across the ON push button will become NO to NC, thereby
29
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

providing a latch to hold the main contactor coil activated which eventually maintains the
control circuit active even after releasing the ON push button switch.
When Star Main Contactor (KM1) close its connect Motor connects on STAR and it’s
connected in STAR until Time Delay Auxiliary contact KT (3) become NC to NO.
Once the time delay is reached its specified Time, the timer’s auxiliary contacts (KT)(3) in Star
Coil circuit will change its position from NC to NO and at the Same Time Auxiliary contactor
(KT) in Delta Coil Circuit(4) change its Position from NO To NC so Delta coil energized
and Delta Main Contactor becomes NO To NC. Now Motor terminal connection change from
star to delta connection.
A normally close auxiliary contact from both star and delta contactors (5&6)are also placed
opposite of both star and delta contactor coils, these interlock contacts serves as safety
switches to prevent simultaneous activation of both star and delta contactor coils, so that one
cannot be activated without the other deactivated first. Thus, the delta contactor coil cannot be
active when the star contactor coil is active, and similarly, the star contactor coil cannot also be
active while the delta contactor coil is active.
The control circuit above also provides two interrupting contacts to shut down the motor.
The OFF push button switch break the control circuit and the motor when necessary. The
thermal overload contact is a protective device which automatically opens the STOP Control
circuit in case when motor overload current is detected by the thermal overload relay, this is to
prevent burning of the motor in case of excessive load beyond the rated capacity of the motor
is detected by the thermal overload relay.
Advantages of Star-Delta starter
 The operation of the star-delta method is simple and rugged
 It is relatively cheap compared to other reduced voltage methods.
 Good Torque/Current Performance.
Disadvantages of Star-Delta starter
 Low Starting Torque (Torque = (Square of Voltage) is also reduce).
 Break In Supply – Possible Transients
 Six Terminal Motor Required (Delta Connected).
 It provides only 33% starting torque

2.6 How good in Performance of work tasks

So far, I have been describing the tasks that we completed in the internship program. Mainly I have
been installing and maintaining medical equipment with engineers. I did all those tasks with full
commitment and dedication. The fact that I met various working medical devices has made us
more interested in my work tasks. Sometimes I work overtime if I did not finish the work started
especially installation. Once I was given tasks I would complete them with teamwork and
effectively. My engineers were helpful to show me anything that we found challenging. There
were reading assignments, and other activities that were given to us by the service manager we
were also submitting reports about our work.
2.7 Challenges I faced during our work tasks
I faced a transportations facility problem. The company had only two cars for the service
department and there were five interns and junior engineers. It was difficult to go with engineers
to different institutions where the problem is reported. The main problem we faced during our
internship program was in maintenance procedures. Some maintenances were not finished in one
day so we were not able to see if they were functional or if further problems occur.
2.8 The measure I have taken to overcome the problem
To gain the belief of institutions, I focused on our task and complete every task I was assigned
effectively and efficiently to solve transportation the company sometimes orders as a ride through
corporate or we will split to overcome the problem. For the maintenance, we filled the gap by
asking the engineers if new problems arise or if it is operational.

CHAPTER THREE
3. OVERALL BENEFITS GAINED FROM THE INTERNSHIP
The internship period is a period where academically survived students join professional industries
to apply their theoretical knowledge practically into the real challenging world to publicize their
imagination with physical bodies. Learning only engineering principles does not make students
successful in solving different problems.
The last four months of our internship program was the very first time that gives me real-life
experience in my field and a lot more benefits from personal to professional aspect. I was able to
get more than I expected in terms of practical skills, theoretical knowledge, interpersonal
communication skill, work ethics, entrepreneur skill, and other factors, which could let me grow
as a person and as a Electrical Engineer.
3.1 Benefit in terms of practical skills
Exposing the students to a practical skill is the main objective of an internship program since the
whole time teaching and learning process is more about theories. Therefore, my time in Infinity
Advanced Technology Solution was a good chance to understand my field and its influence in the
medical world and improve my practical skills.

During my stay in the hosting company, I was part of the service-engineering department, which
consists of many experienced senior and junior Electrical and Biomedical engineers. The
department also has some mechanical engineers. In addition, I was able to work together with
those engineers and gain experience and skills in different sections like installing, training,
corrective and preventive maintenance of different medical equipment, especially on medical
imaging equipment.
Some examples:
 Installation of medical equipment like, CT scan and MRI
 Preventive and corrective maintenances of different medical equipment.
 How to come up with a reasonable solution for problems in the hospitals and other
facilities. How to be a competitive entrepreneur and control demands.
 How to use flaring tools and prepare copper tubes for AC installation.

32
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

3.2 Benefit in terms of theoretical knowledge

Theoretical skill answers our ‘why’ question. It embodies all the applied or conducted experiments
and tells me how all the established theories came into existence. My stay in the company was not
all about practical skills but much more including theoretical knowledge. Our supervisor there
made it an obligation to submit a report in every different activity we were involved. In the report
I submit now and then, I am expected to include what I observe, what I learn, what challenges I
face, and more. Therefore, these made me keep reading and gathering more information. Beyond
the report, I was expected to read and upgrade myself in the theoretical part with the materials they
provide me and other methods to keep up with the engineers and understand what they tell me.

The other way I was able to improve my theoretical knowledge was by asking the engineers to
explain to us something we couldn’t understand or something that has been in mind. For that
matter, anyone in there was happy and willing to explain everything they know especially when it
comes to electrical parts.
To
 point out the benefits in this aspect:
 Electrical safeties and precautions

 Electrical equipment working principle like contactor, breaker, relay

 I get knowledge about the operations of AC systems. There are a lot of AC types that
exist such as split unit, fan coil, chiller
 I understand how to read and interpret circuit and wiring diagrams

3.3 Benefit in terms of interpersonal communication skills

The working world needs your knowledge, effort, being technical, and a lot more. One thing that
is equally important as the other factors is the communication skills you have. Communication is
not all about making a question and answering what you are asked but it means knowing whom
you are talking to, your gesture while you are talking, the timing you are asking someone for a
favor, how loud you can be, and how you sound. Due to the reason that I could meet and work
with different peoples like customers who are purchasing our service, hospital engineers who are
responsible for everything in their component, physicians and radiologists who are our end users,
our company different level managers and even our service department engineers I was able to
improve my communication skill from them.

33
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

 I become aware of our strengths and weakness and others too

 I develop caring for our co-partner and service team members
 I do tasks collaborating with other team members

 I exercise comforting other people’s when they need it

 I develop resolving and managing conflicts.

I develop to give constructive feedback for other peoples

 I exercise diplomacy which used to handle affairs without hostility

 I show empathy for others

 I develop listening skills.

 I exercise inspiring and motivating our partners to do their best.

 I develop flexibility in thinking and operating style.

 I exercise monitoring our body language and ensure we’re not doing things that make people
think we’re disengaged or aggressive.

 I develop being enthusiastic and engaged when we interact with people.

 I develop patience when dealing with others.
3.4 Benefit in terms of work ethics
Work ethics is a belief in work as a moral good, which is a set of values-centered on the importance
of doing work and reflected especially in a desire or determination to work hard. Specifically,
engineering ethics is the set of rules and guidelines that engineers adhere to as a moral obligation
to their profession and the world.
The preamble of the national society of professional engineers (NSPE) code of conduct for
engineers 2007 states: “Engineers shall at all times recognize that their primary obligation is to
protect the safety, health, property, and welfare of the public. If their professional judgment is
overruled under circumstances where the safety, health, property, or welfare of the public are
endangered, they shall notify their employer or client and such other authority as may be
appropriate.”

At infinity ATS PLC, I experienced the essence of both universal and job-specific ethical standards
and mostly on the major work ethics requirements by the working environment, so that I won’t be
new when I join the real-life working environment after graduation. The measure performance of

34
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

an employee of any profession mainly depends on his/her compliance to the work ethics. Work
ethics is one of the most significant lessons we got during the internship period. The following
ethics is by far what we learn and develop during the internship:

 Punctuality

 Willingness to learn
 Transparency

 Honesty

 Loyalty

 Respecting each other

 Being responsible

 Avoiding conflicts

 Accountability

 Show initiative without being told

 Communicate effectively … and others.

3.5 Benefits in terms of entrepreneur skill

The internship had been a good starting place to enhance my entrepreneurship capabilities. An
entrepreneur is a positive thinker who can see solutions from the ocean of problems or a surplus
of resources unseen by others. An entrepreneur is also able to take risks of the outcome of the
things he/she does. Indeed, I learned a lot about improving critical thinking and problem-solving
skills. The change from school to the workplace itself was another learning opportunity,
conditioning us to adapt to change and to be able to take responsibility. Therefore, I can say that
from this internship period in addition to formal academic knowledge, I was able to gain general-
purpose life experiences.

Infinity is a company that was developed by an entrepreneur who worked on medical consulting
service in the USA, Boston, and came to his country and established one of the leading medical
equipment suppliers in the country, so the story of the owner of the company is inspiring
entrepreneurship lesson for us. The entrepreneurial ways of thinking skills such as understanding
the business concepts, an idea of business philosophy, having a long term vision about being
entrepreneurs, knowing about risk management, knowing the opportunities and resources which I

35
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

have, selecting the effective way of doing work are the concepts of entrepreneurship that internship
program taught us.

3.6 Other benefits

Improving leadership skills

This internship period was also a time of improving my leadership skills. I was able to develop my
leadership skills by giving comments, sharing ideas, and participating in the works that we already
knew for the experience. During this time, one needs to have good qualities of leadership skills to
do the jobs at infinity. Because in the end; I was sent and able to do the job on my own so as it was
a better way to improve my leadership skills since at the field of work, I was the leaders of the task
given to us.

Improving team playing skills

Working in a team was the best part of the internship program that I have encountered.in fact, for
many companies teamwork is very necessary because different professionals trained especially on
specific medical equipment and face different problems on the way of working so to solve one
issue they need to work as a team. In addition, nothing different from this was what I came across
at infinity advanced technology solution PLC, as many works and problems were been solved in
a team. As illustrated early most of the company’s work was on medical imaging as this field is
bulky and vast it needs a team to install, calibrate and maintain. Therefore, without teamwork, the
task would have been very tedious, tiresome, and time-killing, which is unnecessary.

In-group work, everyone has to share responsibilities. This was the way I developed the virtue of
accountability and team spirit. Within a team playing skill, everyone confidently and willingly
shares ideas that could solve the problem. During my stay at infinity, I was managed to work on
many sites as a team so team-playing skills were important to us.

Soft skill

Soft skills are character traits and interpersonal skills that characterize a person’s relationship with
other people. In the workplace, soft skills are considered as a complement to hard skills, which
refers to a person’s knowledge and occupational skills. Additional to the formal internship program

36
Debre Birhan University, computer engineering
INTERNS REPORT 08/06/2022

I acquired soft skills through training hosted by STEM POWER. We train about critical thinking,
teamwork, communication, personality, and financial management. We are also certified for the
training.

Secure good reference and recommendation

The supervisor and mentors including the Engineers we met are valuable references for us in time
I look for a scholarship or a real job. Furthermore, our supervisor there gave us a recommendation
letter on tasks we were involved.

Create a professional network

In our every moment there, we were meeting other people in my field who are working in
Hospitals, in other companies, in consumables suppliers and a lot more. In addition, the most
successful job searching usually comes from meeting others in the same field who can recommend
me for open positions. Therefore, those professionals I met might be the most valuable connection
to my future jobs, so I tried to show the curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness I have for the
profession and let them see my potential.

Building confidence

Being considered as an employee was exciting and somehow it fills anyone with anxiety, hope,
and ambition all at once. Our collaboration and cooperation skills were developed and a lot more
benefits I get made us stand strong and confident.

Learned about ourselves

The more we explore different fields, was the more we discover about them. Working in a real-
world environment helped me to understand the depths of our field and helped us to determine
whether it is a career I wish to pursue in the future.

It let me learns about our capabilities and ultimately encourages us to have a greater understanding
of our strengths and weaknesses. It can be a challenging experience at times. Still, the benefits we
gain from being pushed out of our comfort zone helped me tremendously in the future when I am
presented with a difficult task or situation.

CHAPTER FOUR
4. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
4.1 Conclusion
The internship is a program that develops practical knowledge and creates better professional skills
for students. Our internship at infinity advanced technology and solution plc lasted for four months
I learned many things starting from the time I joined the company we actively participated in the
service department of a company. The main goal of this program is to enable students to handle
real-life problems by using the knowledge they have in class. I was always eager and excited to do
and learn new things. I have participated in maintenance (corrective and preventive), installation,
and calibration of different medical equipment. In addition to maintenance and installation
activities, I have done two mini-projects to solve company problems. The projects are entitled RF
shielded Motion Sensor embedded in the wall an and remote control of the cooling system

In general, developing practical skills is not the only benefit I have gained from the internship, but
it also offers me a lot of basic experience in terms of good work ethics, developing interpersonal
communication skill, team playing skill, adapting leadership skill, and social life. I have also
developed the ability to solve an engineering problem and reach a proper solution. Therefore, an
internship is a golden time for students.

4.2 Recommendation
During our stay at infinity advanced technology and solution plc, we have seen the company is
highly respected with a strong identity, which earns the devotion of its customer by providing
quality. However, we have some recommendations for our hosting company. These are to add
transportation facilities for the service department, to facilitate the delivery system to sites as far
as they can and to have an organized inventory system
