INTRODUCTION ANATOMICAL PLANES

Imaginary planes that cuts the body, creating slice pieces of different organs and structures.
Main anatomical planes includes Mid-sagittal / sagittal, transverse, frontal plane

ANATOMICAL POSITION
A fixed position in anatomy in which a person is standing upright straight , with the arms
hanging to the side, palms facing at front , and thumbs pointing away from the body. The feet
are parallel, and toes pointing to the front.

TERMS USED
Anatomical terms used to explain the position and relation between differnent structures.
Main directional terms includes anterior, posterior, ventral, dorsal, proximal, distal, median,
medial, lateral, superior, inferior, cranial, caudal, external, internal, superficial, deep.
PROCEDURE
• Subject standing in anatomical position was observed.
• We identified its anatomical planes.
• Mid sagittal plane, frontal plane and transverse plane.
• After that the directional terms were noted on the subject.
• Which includes Anterior, posterior, proximal, distal, ventral, dorsal, median, medial,
lateral, superior, inferior, cranial, caudal, superficial, deep, palmar, dorsal, plantar.
• Then we noted the observation.

OBSERVATION BODY PLANES

A body plane is divided into four major planes:

• Mid sagittal median is a vertical plane crossing through the mid of the body that cuts it
longitudinally into two halves right and left .
• Sagittal arbitrary vertical plane crossing through the body parallel to the mid, cutting it
longitudinally into right and left.
• Frontal vertical plane at 90 degrees to the sagittal plane that seperated the body into
anterior and posterior regions.
• Transverse horizontal plane at 90 degrees to the sagittal and frontal planes, cutting the
body into a upper and lower portions.

POSITION AND DIRECTIONS

The term position and direction explains the location of one part or organ according to the
other organ, usually along the three planes.

They include following terms

• Anterior, posterior
• Superior, inferior
• Medial, lateral, intermediate
• Proximal, distal
• !uperficial, deep

ANTERIOR, POSTERIOR
In front of something or in the front is anterior while in the back or behind of something is
posterior.
SUPERIOR, INFERIOR
Towards the head is the superior and towards the feet is the inferior

MEDIAL, LATERAL
Towards the median is medial and away from the median is lateral

PROXIMAL, DISTAL
Closer or towards the trunk or the point of origin of the body part is proximal while Away or
farthest away from the trunk or the point of origin of the body part is distal.

SUPERFICIAL, DEEP
Superficial is near to the surface while deep is away from the surface
CONCLUSION
In this lab we studied anatomical plane and position.
We learned about the anatomical position. We examined three planes of body sagittal, frontal,
transverse. We studied about the terms which include anterior, posterior, medial, lateral,
proximal, distal, superficial, deep.
