1. Living Room
This is the area is for general use. Hence the living and drawing room should be planned near the
entrance south east aspects. During colder day the sun is towards the south and will receive sunshine which
is a welcoming feature. During summer, sunshine it the northern side and entry of sunrays from southern or
south-east aspects do not arise. The normal size of the drawing room may be 4m x 5m. The size should
better be determined by the kind of furniture needed. The size and shape of the furniture further depends
upon the living standard of the family and the purpose it is going to be served. The doors should have a
minimum width of 900mm so that the piece of heavy furniture could be easily moved and out. Position of
doors in the living room is also an important.
2. Kitchen:
For kitchen having separate store 4.5 m2 may be the maximum area. Eastern aspects Kitchen is a
very important room in a house. Health, comfort and happiness of the family directly depends upon the
kitchen. The maximum area for kitchen is 5.5 m2 to admit morning sum to refresh and purity the air.

3. Store Room:
The store room is the place for storing grains, foodstuff or junk in the
house for their ready availability and use in the emergency. The pantry
usually nears the kitchen where as the junk store room may be under a
staircase or an unused room or a closet.
4. Bed Room:
It is the most important room in a house as one spend more than one-
third of his life at rest, in sleep here. Two person are commonly supposed to
occupy one room. Bed room may also provided with attached toilets, size of
which depends upon the number of beds. They should be located so as to give
privacy and should accommodate beds, chair, cupboard etc. and they should
have north-west or southwest aspect. From a practical point of view, 4m x 3m
is found to be a good size for a bed rom in a house for the middle class
family.
5. Bath and Water Closet
Bath and W.C. are usually combined in one room and attached to the
bed room and should be well finished. This should be filled with bath tub,
shower, washhand basin, W.C., shelves, towels, racks brackets, etc. Floors
should be mosaic or white glazed tiles. Be room with attached bath and W.C
separated baths and latrines may also be provided.
6. Veranda
There should veranda in front as well as in the rear. The front veranda
serves setting place for male members and waiting place for visitors. The
back veranda serves as a ladies apartment for their sitting, working
controlling, and kitchen works etc. Veranda projects the room against direct
sun, rain and weather effect. They are used as sleeping place during summer
and rainy season, and are used to keep various things. Veranda also gives
appearance to the building. The area of the building may vary from 10% to
20% of the building. In order to secure comfort, veranda on the south and
west are indispensable. Providing veranda on the east and north is a luxury
rather than necessity. If the verandas is used simply for the sake of a passage
or corridor it need not to be more than 1m to 2m wide, Any width more than
this for this purpose is a waste. If, however, it is to be used as a sitting room
or a waiting room, its width should be 1.8 m as a minimum. A veranda more
than 4m wide is uneconomical.
