Many thousands of people use sign language. Deaf people can’t hear but they use sign language to speak and
understand. Babies and young children use it too. They can’t say words but they can talk to their parents with
their fingers and hands and their parents can understand them perfectly well.
Some signs mean words – for example, there is a sign for ‘yes’ and one for ‘no’. These signs are not difficult,
and even some animals can learn them. There are also signs for all the letters in the alphabet – so you can spell
words too.
We don’t all know sign language – but everyone understands ‘body language’. In very old films, we can’t hear
the actors’ voices, of course, but we can understand their feelings because they use their faces and also their
bodies.
So, look out! – Your body can speak!
