1 Aśvinī: The Horse's Head
1 Aśvinī: The Horse's Head
Myth
In the beginning, there was Lord Surya (the Sun) who married Sanjana (consciousness). They
had twins, Yama (the God of Death) and Yami, and Vaivaswat Manu . Sanjana felt the heat of
the Sun was way too hot and physically unbearable, so she plotted a plan to relieve herself of
the uncomfortable marriage. She left in her place Chaya (her reflection) so that she could
take care of her husband and her children. Chaya kept this
secret and started living her life with the Sun. Sanjana took
the form of a mare and ran away. Everything was going
great and the Sun never really noticed because he was self-
centered and “cool” Chaya was able to withstand his “heat”.
Lord Surya confronted Chaya and discovered the truth. Chaya told him the entire story and
Lord Surya went out to look for his real wife; he took the form of a horse and won her back
by not shining so brightly (lowering his ego and self-centeredness). This is how he found her;
they united (as a horse & mare) and then had another pair of twins call the Aśvinī Kumaras
(the equine twins) who then became the ‘medicine men’, healers, and the ‘Surgeon of the
Gods’. They were Nastya who is friendly and helpful and Dasra who provides marvelous aid
to anyone in need. Both were born as half horse and half with human bodies.
