RE: Gunfire Incidents Near 816 Kanawha Blvd East
This letter is sent to voice our serious safety concems as residents of $16 Kanawha Boulevard,
East, particularly considering the most recent gunfire incidents near our property of August | and
August 9, 2021
Since downsizing and moving into this building in April 2019, we have tracked seven (7)
different gunfire incidents, all occurring between 2am and 3:30am, after the bars close. Four (4)
incidents have happened since March 2021. On August 1, nearly two dozen shots were fired on
the parking lot adjacent to our building. With every occurrence, we are alarmingly awakened,
only to find the police arriving (in most cases) on scene after the incident has occurred.
‘The solution to this matter is obvious to us. By having active police patrol and presence on the
city block encompassing Virginia, Hale, Kanawha Boulevard, and Capitol Sireets during the
hours of 1:00am ~ 3:00 am, we would at least have some sense of safety as residents.
When we downsized, we wanted to stay in Charleston. Safety has always been high priority for
us. Being situated three blocks from police headquarters seemed a reasonable assurance of this.
We are not certain of our safety now and whether we want to stay in Charleston. Undoubtedly,
this would be an issue of attraction and retention for anyone considering urban dwelling.
