1. INTRODUCTION

1.1. Overview
DmSwitch EDD SII is a product of DATACOM’s DmSwitch family geared to offer intelligent LAN/WAN
demarcation services for last mile Metro Ethernet access.

Its packet switch L2 is performed in silicon, with switch fabric of 24Gbit/s, supporting jumbo frames.

EDD SII enables managed access connections according to IEEE 802.3ah (Ethernet First Mile –
Operations, Administration and Maintenance) and 802.1ag (Connectivity Fault Management), housed as
a standalone device with a full range AC/DC internal power supply.

In the E1 models, the E1 ports are used for converting TDM data in Ethernet packets (CESoP Bundles).

WAN ports are to be used with SFP modules, allowing flexibility of optical configurations and varying
distances (SFP modules are sold separately).

Centralized management is achieved through DATACOM’s DmView Network Management System,

which offers a Graphical User Interface (GUI) proper to monitor the state of the units, network conditions
as well as configuration and inventory management functions.

DmSwitch EDD SII also offers additional QoS services which enables traffic prioritization and bandwidth
availability control at the demarcation point.

4. MAKING CONNECTIONS

This chapter describes how SFP modules should be installed and removed. It also informs about
DATACOM recommendations on cleanness and storing optical modules and fibers.

The SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) modules are applied in the equipment’s SFP ports, operating as
transceivers between the equipment and the selected optical communication path.

In order to ensure a good health and high performance of the equipment is very important to follow the
next guidelines which Datacom recommends.

Optical Cords Care

o Keep the unused optical cords always with the protection covers. The nucleus of the
optical cords may get dirty and provoke loss of performance just by being kept
uncovered, even placed inside appropriated cabinet;

o Perform the cleanness of the optical cord nucleus before use them. To perform the
cleanness procedure, must be used specific material only. Any other used material for
the optical cord nucleus cleanness may cause loss of performance of the equipment or
even irreparable damage in the optical cords.

Optical Modules Care

o To handle the optical modules, it must be performed always using a grounded wrist
strap;

o For transporting and storing the optical modules, always must be used the original
packing box in order to prevent any physical or electrostatic damage in the module.

o The unused modules must always be stored with its protection cover cage inserted in
order to avoid the ingress of dirt, which may cause loss of performance of the link.

Signals over fiber optic cables are transmitted via LASERs. Although the LASERs are compliant with the
requirements of Class 1 LASER Products and are eye safe in normal conditions, never look directly at a
transmission port when it is in operation.

During any work execution in the equipment, certify that the technician responsible for the modification is
using the appropriate protections. The grounding (and use of grounded wrist strap) can avoid damages for
the technician’s health as well as for the equipment.

The DATACOM SFP and XFP modules are tested to fulfill the INF-8074i and IEC60825-1 Specification.
Non-approved modules do not guarantee the correct operation of the equipment and can damage the
interface cards. From Firmware Version 12.4 onwards, DATACOM equipment will allow the usage of non-
homologated SFPs. However, in previous firmware versions, DATACOM equipment will check if the SFP is
homologated and if not, it will perform the lockout of the module. Contact the technical support of
DATACOM to further information about the risks of usage of non-homologated SFP and the possibility of
unlock them.

4.1. SFP Module Installation and Removal

4.1.1. Inserting Optical Modules

Insertion or removal of SFP transceivers can be performed without turning off the switch. The modules
are hot-swappable, but make sure there are no network optical cords connected to the module before
removing it.

The installation of SFP modules is simply executed by fitting the module into the equipment’s SFP slot
and by pushing it until will be fixed. The right position to fit it can be checked on Figure 15.

Figure 15. SFP Modules Installation

After the module fitting, fasten the security latch according to Figure 16. It will works as safety catch for
the optical fibers, whenever they will be connected.

Figure 16. Security Latch

As soon as the latch is positioned, connect the optical fibers.

In the DATACOM DmSwitch EDD Series products, it is possible to use optical and electrical ports
simultaneously. The EDD devices allow the insertion of electrical SFPs in optical ports, increasing this
way the number of electrical ports, if necessary.

4.1.2. Removing Optical Modules

Before removing the optical fibers it is recommended to verify if there is any mark/instruction, indicating
which fiber should be connected to which module.

Follow the installation’s inverse order for modules removal:

Remove the fiber optical.

Drop the security latch.

Pull the module by the latch, according to Figure 17.

7. E1 ADAPTOR CABLE RJ45 - IEC

7.1. Overview
The E1 Adaptor Cable RJ45 – IEC converts the E1 RJ45 standard, available in the rear panel, to
IEC standard, enabling, this way, the connection of the MA Patch Panel (see item 10) or in
another IEC standard device.

The cable is 30cm length and it goes connectorized to the MA, remaining only perform the
connection of RJ45 ports in the corresponding E1s of the equipment’s rear panel.

Datacom provides two cable models: one for the EDD 2E1s and one for the EDD 8E1s. They are
described as follow:

10. MA ADAPTOR CABINET-RACK

The EDD SII family contains three mechanical adapters which allow the installation of EDD SII table
devices in 19-inch racks: MA-01, MA-16 and MA-17.

These adapters have variations which will be described in its own chapters. The MA-01 can be used in
conjunction with any DmSwitch EDD SII model, supporting up to two devices in the same mechanical
adaptor.

The Table-Rack adaptors MA-16 and MA-17 were designed to convert the standard RJ45 E1, available
in the rear panel of EDD E1 into IEC E1 standard of the patch-panel in the MA, enabling the connection
with devices which use the IEC standard, through the RJ45xIEC cables described in previous chapters.

In MA-16 and MA-17 solutions, the cables are sent connectorized in the patch panel.

In the MA-16 solution (8E1s), four RJ45xIEC (710.0292.01) cables are connectorized, besides the clock
cable. In the MA-17 solution (2E1s), two RJ45xIEC (710.0211.00) cables are connectorized, besides the
clock cable.

10.1. MA-01
MA-01 is a table-rack adaptor, supporting up to two EDD SII, allowing the installation of EDD SII devices
in 19-inch racks.

The MA-01 solution supports only E1 connections, which are assembled in Rj-45 connectors, because it
does not provides IEC-RJ45 adaptors. Thus, the MA-01 is available only 120 ohms connections.

For the correct installation of EDDs, and in order to connect the E1s properly, is important to observe the
impedance straps configuration inside the equipment.

When the E1s are connected via MA-16, MA=17 or even directly via coaxial cables with BNC
connectors, (75 ohms) will not be necessary to change any hardware configuration in EDD straps,
because this is the fabric default configuration of EDD. However, if the E1s are available in RJ-45
connectors in UTP cables, it will be necessary to remove the impedance straps from E1 until E16. The
impedance straps location is illustrated in next figure.

DmSwitch EDD SII – 204-4117-07 32

Figure 28. Impedance Straps Location

The impedance straps must be removed only for E1 connections via RJ-45. However, if the E1
connections are using MA-16, MA-17 or are directly connected to coaxial cables with BNC connectors, the
straps must not be removed because the fabric default configuration is 75 ohms.

DmSwitch EDD SII – 204-4117-07 33

In Figure 29 is illustrated the correct method to screw the devices on MA-01, fixing the equipmento at the
adaptor. After fix the equipment in the adaptor, just tighten the screws of MA-01 in the rack.

Figure 29. Table-Rack Adaptor MA-01

10.2. MA-16
With eight IEC IN/OUT connectors, besides the clock connections, the MA-16 provides the conversion
solution RJ45 x IEC to EDD E1 with 8E1s.

The MA-16 is displayed in Figure 30.

Figure 30. MA-16 Adaptor Cabinet-Rack

According the cable description in item 7.1.3, for each two E1s, one cable is used in order to provide in
the other end one RJ45 connector for the corresponding two E1s of the MA-16.

DmSwitch EDD SII – 204-4117-07 34

To perform an appropriate physical connection of E1’s in the MA-16, the DmSwitch EDD SII must be
placed and fixed inside the MA-16, according Figure 31.

10.3. MA-17
Containing two IEC IN/OUT connectors, besides the clock connection, the MA-17 provides the
conversion solution RJ45 x IEC to EDD E1 with 2E1s.

The MA-17 is illustrated in Figure 36.

Figure 36. MA-17 Adaptor Cabinet-Rack

According the cable description in item 7.1.1, for each two E1s, one cable is used in order to provide in
the other end one RJ45 connector for the corresponding two E1s of the MA-16.

To perform an appropriate physical connection of E1’s in the MA-17, the DmSwitch EDD E1 must be
placed and fixed inside the MA-17, according Figure 37.
