How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are
guided by theteacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the
topic forpresentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal.
Products of learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning
in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate

their learning and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective
could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting
the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

The lesson will start by asking students to brainstorm what they know about finding the moral
or message of a story. I will give out a short quiz asking students about their prior knowledge
on summarizing. Then we will share answers and I’ll write them on the board for students to
refer to throughout the lesson. Students will then have the opportunity to use the shared answers
for their assignment. We will watch The Lost Bunny video together. Students will be given the
option to record notes on the story in their learning journal or a graphic organizer. After
students watch the video, we will review how to summarize a story and find its central
message. I will also write the learning goal on the board for students to keep in mind. Then
students will use PowerPoint to retell and summarize the story. I will put them in partners so
that they can explore creating content with PowerPoint as a team. Students will be given an exit
ticket where they evaluate if they included setting, message, characters, and key events in their
PowerPoint.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets
students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
The story students are using is in eBook format. Which gives them the chance to go back and
watch it if needed. Also, we can pause the book as we watch it as a class. Giving students
ample time to write notes and read the narration over in case they missed something. The
eBook was created on PowerPoint using PowerPoint stock images. As a class we can use the
story as a model for meeting the learning goal. Students will be co-using PowerPoint as
partners exploring how to translate their knowledge into a presentation. They will be
inserting photos, text boxes, adding slides, and choosing a theme.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
PowerPoint’s main features are simple to use and can be reviewed with students quickly. That
way after they finish the content part of their summary they can engage and explore its extra
features like animations and transitions. The eBook will help students become engaged by
listening and watching it on a big screen. The words will also be large enough that students can
read along. Their formative assessment of note taking has multiple options for students to
choose what best represents their thinking. This supports representation and creates a
collaborative style of learning. My pre-assessment, formative assessment and self-assessment
provides multiple means of action and expression throughout the lesson. Students will be able
to check their learning through their exit ticket. If they forgot to include something on the exit
ticket, they can make a note of it and go back and add it. Making students hold themselves
accountable for their work. Technology supports this self-accountability because you are able
to go back and edit your work. Whereas a worksheet or poster is final after you turn it in.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I think letting students explore the features of PowerPoint will have a strong impact on
students. Sometimes teachers spend too much time showing students every little feature of
technology. Then they become frustrated when students aren’t paying attention and have
questions later on. Rather than waste time lecturing and modeling it is more beneficial to let
students experiment and help them use the program during the process. I look forward to this
because its fun watching students use technology to express their creativity. They think in ways
that I don’t and inspire me.
