WHAT'S IN THIS ISSUE?

Everything you need to know about

assessments and how they will be used
with your kiddos In our classroom!

HELLO, ITS MS. DRAUGELIS!

I am excited to share with you a KEY part of my job that helps me ensure everyone Is
where they should be and how I can be a better and more effective teacher! There are
various ways to assess students and their understanding. I am here to HELP and GUIDE
your child to success! An assessment Is an "evaluation or estimation of the nature,
quality, or ability of someone or something". We use assessments as a tool to gather
students Insight to provide us a better understanding of what they know so we can meet
them where they are at academically and build on that foundation! Assessments
provides feedback for students and teachers! Feedback Is known as the "breakfast of
champions" (McTighe).

“TAKE CHANCES, MAKE MISTAKES, AND GET MESSY!”

DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT
This type of assessment Is a pre-assessment that
assesses prior knowledge before starting a new lesson.
Basically checking their foundation to build on. Our goal Is
always to meet students where they are at! A great
disagnostic assessment Is a KWL chart! (Know, What
they'd want to know/wonder, and what they Learned!
This keeps students engaged In their learning as well!

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
This type of assessment can be given before or after
lessons! This helps us as It gives teachers feedback from
their teachings; what stuck with students, what needs to
be touched on more. "Formative assessment produces
greater increases in student achievement" (NCTM)
This can be done using weekly quizzes, reflection
paragraphs In journals, and exit tickets!

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
This type of assessment Is given at the end of the unit to
show what they have learned and attained throughout
the unit or year, If It Is a SOL (standardized test). This Is
given as a test, final exam, or more formal quiz! This type
of assessment Is given at the end of the unit to show
what they have learned and attained throughout the unit
or year, If It Is a SOL (standardized test). This Is given as a
test, final exam, or more formal quiz!
BELOW ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF FORMATIVE

ASSESSMENTS I PLAN ON UTILIZING

KAHOOT!
Kahoot! Is a fun and engaging app that challenges students with
timed questions to answer! Its a great way for students to test their
knowledge while having fun!!! Students can partner up or work
Individually and compete with peers!

JOURNALING
I will have students complete journaling and reflecting In their
notebooks! They will either have a question to answer or they can
reflect on what stuck with them during the lesson!

EXIT TICKETS
I will use exit tickets for students to complete at the end of the lesson.
These tickets will include answering a few questions either on.a sheet of
paper or a sticky note!
GRADING
A grade Is a statistic to communicate
to others the achievement level
(Starrbe). These are typically letter
grades that go Into the grade book and
then shared at the end of each quarter
as a report card; like A, B, C, D, and F.
They are applied to overall grades
rather than Individual assignments.

SCORING
A score is a marking on an Individual
assignment or project that uses
numerical values! It also provides
students with feedback on where they
could use Improvement!
RUBRICS AND HOW THEY'RE USED
A rubrics Is a chart that lays out all the required content and details that specific
assignment should have. It clearly states how to receive the best score and what Is
needed to get that! I believe using a rubric is the best way to set students up for
success. . It "permits students to see what Is central to excellent performance"
(Starrbe).

HOW I'M GETTING STUDENTS

INVOLVED
I plan on using rubrics with my students
on all assignments necessary! I plan on
always giving out the rubric along with the
assignment details so they know what Is
expected! I think that's the best way to
prepare my students for success!
"Using different types of assessments like diagnostic, formative, and summative in our
classroom Is key for making all of us better learners! Not only are they learning from
me but I am learning from them as well! My students are the ones who will be
continuously teaching me about how I can Improve and that Is how I will become
more effective In my teaching. I do not want my students looking at these
assessments negatively but in a way that can better their learning and improve my
teaching! Meeting my students where they are at and building from that foundation Is
how life long learners are made.
I also want these assessments to be fun and engaging when possible! I plan on
creating different ways to assess them that will not be the boring and traditional way
we were all assessed In school. "Authentic assessments require students to be
effective performers with acquired knowledge" (Wiggins). We all learn differently, so It
Is only fair that we are assessed differently as well.
