Human: Fall Flat

Materials
Thin white yarn
Crochet hook to match size of yarn
Fiberfill
Tapestry needle to weave in ends
3/4” suction cups (optional)
Thin wire (optional)

You can add wire to the arms to make the figure poseable, and you can add suction cups to the palms to make it
cling to smooth surfaces. See end of pattern for tips on both.

Head

R1: Magic loop with 6 stitches (6)

R2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12)
R3: 1 sc , 2 sc in next stitch, repeat 6 times (18)
R4: 2 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat 6 times (24)
R5: 3 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat 6 times (30)
R6: 4 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat 6 times (36)
R7-13: sc around (36)
R14: 1 dec, 5 sc, repeat 6 times (36)
R15: 1 dec, 4 sc, repeat 6 times (30)
R16: 1 dec, 3 sc, repeat 6 times (24)
R17: 1 dec, 2 sc, repeat 6 times (18)
Stuff head with fiberfill.
R18: 1 dec, 1 sc, repeat 6 times (12)
R19: 6 dec (6)
Cut yarn and weave around through each stitch, then pull to close hole. Weave in end.

Body
R1: Chain 17
R2: Starting in second chain from hook, sc in next 15 ch, inc in final chain. Now, working on the other side of
the chains, sc in next 15 st, inc in final st (34)
R3-26: Sc around. On the final row, add enough sc to finish at the side of the body (where the hip will be) (34)
To make legs:
R27: sc 6. Next, you're going to make the crotch. Pinch the front and back of the body together, lining up the
next 5 sc with the matching stitches from the opposite side. 5 sc front and back together. Sc 12 (34)
R28: Don't go back across the crotch; sc around the leg (12)
R29: sc 5, dec, sc 5 (11)
R30: sc 5, dec, sc 4 (10)
R31: 10 sc around (10)
R31: sc 4, dec, sc 4 (9)
R32: 9 sc around (9)
R33: sc 4, dec, sc 3 (8)
R34-37: 8 sc around (8)
Cut yarn and run through each stitch, then pull to close hole. Weave in end.
Repeat from R28 for second leg.

Arms
If you want to add wire or suction cups, see end of pattern before making arms.
R1: Magic loop with 6 stitches (6)
R2&3: 6 sc around (6)
R4: Popcorn stitch for thumb: make 3 sc in the next stitch, then carefully remove your hook and reinsert it into
the first sc you made. Add the dropped stitch back onto the hook, yarn over, and pull through both loops. 5 sc.
(6)
R5: 3 sc, inc, 2 sc (7)
R6&7: sc around (7)
R8: 3 sc, inc, 3 sc (8)
R9-16: sc around (8)
R17: 4 sc, inc, 3 sc (9)
R18&19: sc around (9)
R10: 4 sc, inc, 4 sc (10)
R11-13: sc around (10)
You can put a bit of fiberfill in the arms, or leave them unfilled so they'll be a bit floppy.
Hat
R1: Magic loop with 6 stitches (6)
R2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12)
R3: 1 sc , 2 sc in next stitch, repeat 6 times (18)
R4: 2 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat 6 times (24)
R5: 3 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat 6 times (30)
R6: 4 sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat 6 times (36)
R7-9: sc around (36)
To make brim:
R8: sc 17 (17)
R9: ch 1 and turn. sc into the second st, and then 15 sc (16)
R10: ch 1 and turn. sc into the second st, then 14 sc (15)
R11: ch 1 and turn. sc into the second st, then 13 sc (14)
R12: ch 1 and turn. sc into the second st, then 12 sc (13)
R13: sc around entire bottom of hat to make a nice edge.
Cut yarn and weave in end.

Assembly
Sew head to body in the center of the bottom of the head, so that the head flops around on the body.
Sew hat onto head.
Sew arms to shoulders. Or, if you want to add wire to the arms, first cut a piece of wire that is the length of both
arms, plus the width of the body, plus a little bit to bend over at the ends to keep them from poking out of the
hands (depending on how thick your wire is, you might want to make it double this length and bend it in half).
Then run the wire through the body from one shoulder to the other. (Or you could add the wire at the beginning,
after making the first few rounds of the body. I find that it's easy enough to poke through at the end, and it saves
the wire getting caught on the yarn while I'm making the body, but either way is fine). Then slide the arms over
the wires, and sew arms to shoulders.

Suction cups
One of the primary activities of the Human is jumping up and
grabbing onto things, so the suction cups are a fun addition to the
figure. You can simply sew the suctions cups onto the palms at the
end. Or, if you find ones like these that come with a removable hook,
and thus have a narrow neck with a nub opposite the cup, you can
crochet them into the palms as you go.
To crochet them in: after R2, extend the loop on your hook to two or
three times longer than normal. Put the suction cup where the next
stitch will go, with the cup facing out and the little nub on the inside.
The stitch will go around the narrow neck. (see photos at end)
Wrap the long loop over the neck, and insert the hook into the next
stitch. Pull the long loop as tight as possible onto the neck; this is
what's going to hold the cup into the hand, so it should be tight. Wrap
the yarn over the neck as well, and make a sc as usual.
Do R3 as normal.
When you get back to the stitch that holds the cup, it's too tightly wrapped around the neck to insert the hook
into it, so instead ch 1 (it will leave a small hole between rows that you can sew up afterwards).
Make a long loop Wrap loop around neck, put hook
through next stitch, pull tight, then
wrap yarn end over neck as well.
Then sc as normal.

Stitch should be tight enough to keep

the nub from pullout out. How it looks when finished.
Why does this always happen?
