OGL 481 Pro-Seminar I:

PCA-Choosing an Organization Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Identify an organization and situation you want to study over the remainder of the course.
2. Describe the organization and the situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Name and describe your organization.

The organization I have chosen is Target. This is one of the largest retail

companies in the United States that sells a range of goods from clothing to apppliances.

Almost every store has even expanded to carry a full produce and meat department,

making Target a one stop shop for it’s guests. Target puts it’s guests first and is

committed to “helping all families discover the joy of every day life”. On top of that, this

organization cares about it's team and shows it through the “Care, grow, and win

together” culture that is easily observed at the store level.

2) Describe your role in the organization (it can be an internal or external role).

I have been with Target for 4 years, and I promoted for the second time about six

months ago. My current role is a General Merchandise Executive Team Leader. In this

role oversee the entire salesfloor aside from Apparel, Beauty, and Electronics, including

the Starbucks and grocery departments. I am also responsible for the truck unload process

and the stores metrics. All of these departments include five team leaders and about

eighty team members that all fall under my direct leadership. I work alongside three other

1
ETLs that are responsible for other workcenters throughout the store to drive strong

business results and unhold all of Target’s core values.

3) Describe the situation, including information you think the will help the reader

understand the most important elements of the situation. (This will require

selectivity: part of the art of case writing is separating the essential facts from the

mass of information that might be included).

The situation I have chosen is the impact that Covid-19 had on Target’s ability to

stick to it’s core values and the operation effects the virus had on the stores. The

pandemic turned many people’s lives upside down, but for Target team members, we still

went to work every day. It actually significantly increased our workload changed the way

our businesses operate permanently. Online ordering services spiked in popularity, and

we observed record breaking sales. On top of this, many of our team members lived a life

of extreme uncertainty outside of the workplace. Target had to develop ways to give back

to these struggling team members for all the effort they gave to deliver on the

organization’s commitments.
