ECTE323 Power Engineering 2 – Tutorial 6

Q1 The voltage across a BJT during its 'turn on' period falls linearly from 200 V to 0 V in
1.0 µS. During the same period the current rises from 0 A to 100 A linearly. What is the
energy dissipated in the BJT during the turn on period? If the BJT is turned on and off at
a frequency of 5 kHZ what will be its switching power loss? Assume equal switching off
and switching on periods.

Q2 A single-phase half wave diode rectifier with an RL load (R=1 Ω and L=3.3 mH) is
supplied by a 240 V, 50 Hz supply. The extinction angle is 3.962 radians. Given that the
following expresses the current:

 t where   tan1 L
Vm   
i 
2 2 2 sin(t  )  sin .e  R
R  L  
 

Calculate:
(a) Average output voltage.
What would be the average output voltage for the following L and R values?
(b) For L = 0 and R = 1
(c) For R=0  and L = 3.3mH?

Q3 A battery charger is supplied by a 240 V, 50 Hz source. The charger consists of a single

diode and current limiting resistor (R) which is in series with the 12 V battery and a 4:1
step down transformer connected to the 240 V supply. The average charging (battery)
current required is 5 A. Calculate:
(a) Conduction angle of the diode
(b) Value of R (assuming a 5 A average current occurs when the battery is at 12 V).
(c) Power rating of R
(d) Rectifier efficiency

Q4 A single-phase half-wave rectifier is supplied from a 240 V, 50 Hz supply. The load

resistance is 500 . Design a C filter so that the ripple factor of the output voltage is less
than 5%. With the selected value of C what is the average value of the output voltage?
List any assumptions you make to do this problem. Check your solutions against
simulations where possible.

a three phase supply having a line voltage of VL = 415 V at 50 Hz. With the aid of
waveforms derive an expression for the average output voltage. What is the PIV of a
diode in this bridge?

Q6 A three-phase diode bridge rectifier supplies a highly inductive load. The supply line-
line voltage is 415 V and the real power drawn from it is 20 kW. Calculate the
following:
(a) Average load voltage.
(b) Average load current.
(c) Effective resistance of the load.
(d) Fundamental reactive volt-amperes drawn by the rectifier.
(e) Apparent volt-amperes drawn by the rectifier.
(f) AC supply side power factor.
