Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine
Abstract
The method of dry processing of coffee is a vital determinant of quality and price. Dry processing
method produces higher quality beans but is very laborious. Dry coffee processing is the removal of
outer cover and flesh part of coffee bean. This removal of coffee parts are achieved by huller. The
huller consists of many parts. These are gear, shaft, and frame of the huller and also this project
includes their designs. The design consist all the assumption and calculation used to determine the
dimensions of each parts of the huller in this project, a new modified design of huller is introduced
which is simpler and easy to manufacture. So, our goal will be to manufacture the dry coffee huller
machine that is easy to remove outer cover and flesh part of the coffee bean and also decrease the
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine
waste of energy using hand to uncover the flesh part of the coffee.
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Introduction
Hulling refers to the removal of the dried parchment layer immediately surrounding the bean.
Parchment coffee is feed into the machine where it husked & by the friction between two rotating
rough cylinders. a huller machine is a machine which is used to get the exact size and shape of the
coffee bean from the coffee nut. machines are used to remove the parchment layer(endocarp) from
wet processed coffee developing countries like Ethiopia are facing problems of power storage due to
rapid industrialization, no availability of power in rural areas and unemployment among semi-skilled
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine
workers.
These machines are environment friendly i.e. non-polluting, easily handled by the people and
much efficient than old coffee crushing method. Unskilled people may also get employment and also
save the power and money both. development of such an energy source which has tremendous utility
in energizing many rural based process machines in places where reliability of availability of electric
energy is much low. Until about two and half centuries ago, muscle power was the prime source of
energy for performing all the physical activities on our earth, and much of this power had been from
human muscles. Because of the socioeconomic conditions of farmers in several developing countries
including Ethiopia, human muscle power will go on contributing energy requirements for performing
many farm activities at least for next two decades.
In remote villages in Ethiopia, where electric power supply is not available and repair and
maintenance facilities for machines are scarce, human power is still one of the major contributors of
energy for production agriculture as well as for post-harvest agricultural operations. Human energy
has generally been utilized through arms, hands, and back. When using pedal power, that legs also
began to be considered as a means of developing power from human muscles. Maximal power
produced with legs by pedaling is generally limited by adaptations within the oxygen transport system
and the economy required to purchase the accessory is not affordable. Owing to these limitations, a
person can generate more power (about four times) than by traditionally husking. Manual power
enables a person to drive devices at the same or higher rate as that achieved by traditional method, but
with far less effort and fatigue.
1.2 Background
Before the invention of diesel engine, peoples husk coffee traditionally. Even after the
invention of diesel and electrical operated machine due to its product is from foreign countries it was
not soon introduced to Ethiopia. Even though the diesel and electrical operated huller machine
invented, the traditional method is still in use in some parts of Ethiopia where there is no electrical
power supply. This in turn reduces the feasibility of diesel or electrical operated huller machine in
such areas. So the design and modeling manual operated coffee hulling machine is feasible and
popular in both situations whether electrical power supply is available or not. The design of this
machine reduces the time using traditional method. Previously of our design, the machine has been
made many times by many designers but the cost is high and the application is low still now. We are
trying to design cost effective, easily applicable and manufactured locally huller coffee processing
machine.
1.6 limitation
On this project we observed that there is limitation of getting the material we want to achieve
the work that we are doing. Also due to the time given for the project we are unable question the
farmers that harvest the coffee bean.

CHAPTER TWO
2.1 Literature Review
Adeleke.S et al, (2017) designed a small scale hulling machine for improved wet-processed
coffee, the machine was cost effective in running, affordable and runs on 3HP petrol engine .[2]
Devaraju R.B et al. (2018) produced pedal operating rotary huller machine. The machine was
useful for hulling parchment and dry cherry coffee. This was highly efficient machine with low
power consumption and higher throughput .[3]
Next, Montague began producing a hulling machine invented by the Brazilian mechanical
engineer, Evaristo Conrado Engelberg. The machine could remove the husks and shells from rice
and coffee beans.[4]
Furthermore, on January 22, 2019 the longer food machinery company has produced more
qualified and improved huller machine, their design is equipped with special glass on one side
and quenched manganese steel plate on the other. Both materials are super hard and wear
resistant. The leak performance is very good.[5]
CHAPTER THREE
3.1 Methodology
3.1.1 Research design
The method we used to design the huller in this project includes the formal way of
proposal documentation process.
Reviewing journals literature about coffee processing.
Analytical design of different parts of huller with 2D and 3D drawing of each part of
huller.

Let the starting torque is 25% higher than the running torque, therefore the spur gears
should be designed for power,

We know that the gear reduction ratio ( ) is 3. Therefore, the number of teeth on the gear,

TP = 3 ×25

Let us assume that the module (m) for the pinion and gear is 6mm.
Pitch circle diameter of the
pinion, DP = m× T P

We know that for ordinary cut gears and operating at velocities up to 12.5 m/s, the velocity
factor,

Cv =

3+0.55
Since both the pinion and the gear are made of the same material, therefore the pinion is the
weaker.
We know that for 14.5 involute teeth, tooth form factor for the pinion,
Let b =Face width for both the pinion and gear.
We know that the design tangential tooth load (WT),
204.55= (σ Op ×Cv) b × πm ×Y P
204.55= (200 ×0.845)b × π ×6 × 0.0966
b = 0.665m
In actual practice, the face width (b) is taken as 9.5 m to 12.5 m, but in certain cases, due to space
limitations, it may be taken as 6 therefore let us take the face width,
b=6m
=6 × 6
= 36 mm
From Table service factor the other proportions, for the pinion and the gear having
14 .5oinvolute teeth, are as follows:
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine
Addendum = 1 m = 6mm
Duodenum = 1.25 m = 1.25 ×6 = 7.5mm
Working depth = 2 m =2 ×6 = 12mm
Minimum total depth = 2.25 m = 2.25 ×6 = 13.5mm
Tooth thickness = 1.5708 m = 1.5708 ×6 = 9.4248mm
Minimum clearance = 0.25 m = 0.25 ×6 = 1.5mm
We know that the normal load acting between the tooth surfaces,

cos 14.5
= 211.28N
Mb= W R ×100
= 149.37 ×100
= 14937 N-mm
Since the weight of the pinion (WP) is very small as compared to the normal load (WN),
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine
therefore it may be neglected. Thus, the resultant load acting on the pinion (WR) may be taken
equal to WN. And twisting moment on the shaft,

And length of the hub = 1.25
dP=1.25 ×140
= 17.5 mm
Since the length of the hub should not be less than that of the face width i.e. 36 mm, therefore
let us take length of the hub as 36 mm. Since the pitch circle diameter of the pinion is 150 mm,
therefore the pinion should be provided with a web and not arms. Let us take thickness of the
web as 1.8 m, where m is the module.

Conclusion
From the project we conclude that the components of a huller dry coffee processing machine, and the
Huller are the most important parts and if they are designed well, the whole process will become
efficient. The project also shows that it is possible to process a considerable amount of coffee with
limited space.

Recommendation
Finally, we recommend that the project should be continued by other students by making it
automatic rather than manual. It can be very helpful if this can be done.
