Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine

Abstract
The method of dry processing of coffee is a vital determinant of quality and price. Dry processing
method produces higher quality beans but is very laborious. Dry coffee processing is the removal of
outer cover and flesh part of coffee bean. This removal of coffee parts are achieved by huller. The
huller consists of many parts. These are gear, shaft, and frame of the huller and also this project
includes their designs. The design consist all the assumption and calculation used to determine the
dimensions of each parts of the huller in this project, a new modified design of huller is introduced
which is simpler and easy to manufacture. So, our goal will be to manufacture the dry coffee huller
machine that is easy to remove outer cover and flesh part of the coffee bean and also decrease the
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine

waste of energy using hand to uncover the flesh part of the coffee.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction
Hulling refers to the removal of the dried parchment layer immediately surrounding the bean.
Parchment coffee is feed into the machine where it husked & by the friction between two rotating
rough cylinders. a huller machine is a machine which is used to get the exact size and shape of the
coffee bean from the coffee nut. machines are used to remove the parchment layer(endocarp) from
wet processed coffee developing countries like Ethiopia are facing problems of power storage due to
rapid industrialization, no availability of power in rural areas and unemployment among semi-skilled
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine

workers.

These machines are environment friendly i.e. non-polluting, easily handled by the people and
much efficient than old coffee crushing method. Unskilled people may also get employment and also
save the power and money both. development of such an energy source which has tremendous utility
in energizing many rural based process machines in places where reliability of availability of electric
energy is much low. Until about two and half centuries ago, muscle power was the prime source of
energy for performing all the physical activities on our earth, and much of this power had been from
human muscles. Because of the socioeconomic conditions of farmers in several developing countries
including Ethiopia, human muscle power will go on contributing energy requirements for performing
many farm activities at least for next two decades.

In remote villages in Ethiopia, where electric power supply is not available and repair and
maintenance facilities for machines are scarce, human power is still one of the major contributors of
energy for production agriculture as well as for post-harvest agricultural operations. Human energy
has generally been utilized through arms, hands, and back. When using pedal power, that legs also
began to be considered as a means of developing power from human muscles. Maximal power
produced with legs by pedaling is generally limited by adaptations within the oxygen transport system
and the economy required to purchase the accessory is not affordable. Owing to these limitations, a
person can generate more power (about four times) than by traditionally husking. Manual power
enables a person to drive devices at the same or higher rate as that achieved by traditional method, but
with far less effort and fatigue.

However, manual power seems to be potentially advantageous in agriculture, construction and

electrical power generation, when electrical or internal combustion engine power is unavailable and
expensive. in this paper an attempt was made to design and fabricate manually operated huller dry
coffee processing machine which can be used anywhere electric line is not present.

1.2 Background
Before the invention of diesel engine, peoples husk coffee traditionally. Even after the
invention of diesel and electrical operated machine due to its product is from foreign countries it was
not soon introduced to Ethiopia. Even though the diesel and electrical operated huller machine
invented, the traditional method is still in use in some parts of Ethiopia where there is no electrical
power supply. This in turn reduces the feasibility of diesel or electrical operated huller machine in
such areas. So the design and modeling manual operated coffee hulling machine is feasible and
popular in both situations whether electrical power supply is available or not. The design of this
machine reduces the time using traditional method. Previously of our design, the machine has been
made many times by many designers but the cost is high and the application is low still now. We are
trying to design cost effective, easily applicable and manufactured locally huller coffee processing
machine.

1.3 Problem statement

While the gears on the machine are adjusting the dust, the coffee is wasted, which a problem
with surface is finishing. The Priory-made machine would tear them apart when it was hulling, and it
would have parts left over. When brewed in the first machine, the coffee has the characteristic of
being coarse, which is a disgrace to both the user and the manufacturer. Another is content that is
difficult to deliver to the product address, which makes it boring.
The community dissatisfaction and lack of the coffee huller machine when the power fluctuation
or when the power went out for a long period of time (i.e. one day, three day or even a week). The
people those are residing in rural areas are mainly victims of traditional treatment of coffee hulling,
so the energy they taken out to do this is great factor since we are concerned about the technology.
The traditional type of coffee hulling takes a time and the cost.
In general coffee producers are rising in Ethiopia, but coffee technology and machinery are not
moving ahead, and previous work for coffee huller machines cannot be purchased in rural areas due to
the high cost, and even if they could, there is power fluctuation, and the dry coffee bean is not as
quality as it should be.

1.4 Objective of the project

1.4.1 General objective
 The main objective of our project is to build a dry coffee huller machine that can be
operated manually.

1.4.2 Specific objective: -

The specific objective of this project is to;
 To design spur gear for increase or decrease the speed of the machine.
 To design pinion shaft for the transmission of the power.
 To design gear shaft for reducing or increasing speed, increasing torque, reversing rotation,
or varying the driveshaft direction.
 To design gear arms for transfer motion and torque between machine components in
mechanical devices.
 To design the rim for supporting and sealing the tire to the wheel.
 To design the hopper for hold particulate matter or flow-able material of any sort.
 To design huller rough cylinder for removing the beans coat.

1.5 Scope of the project

This project is to design the manually operated dry coffee huller machine. The design includes
material selection, power requirement, component selection, strength analysis, 2D and 3D model
of huller and its components.

1.6 limitation
On this project we observed that there is limitation of getting the material we want to achieve
the work that we are doing. Also due to the time given for the project we are unable question the
farmers that harvest the coffee bean.

CHAPTER TWO
2.1 Literature Review

Khodabakhshian R et al. (2010) published a research paper on systematic design of a pistachio

hulling machine. In their work they have designed an innovative machine that could do hulling,
washing and dehydrating processes simultaneously.[1]

Adeleke.S et al, (2017) designed a small scale hulling machine for improved wet-processed
coffee, the machine was cost effective in running, affordable and runs on 3HP petrol engine .[2]

Devaraju R.B et al. (2018) produced pedal operating rotary huller machine. The machine was
useful for hulling parchment and dry cherry coffee. This was highly efficient machine with low
power consumption and higher throughput .[3]

Next, Montague began producing a hulling machine invented by the Brazilian mechanical
engineer, Evaristo Conrado Engelberg. The machine could remove the husks and shells from rice
and coffee beans.[4]

Furthermore, on January 22, 2019 the longer food machinery company has produced more
qualified and improved huller machine, their design is equipped with special glass on one side
and quenched manganese steel plate on the other. Both materials are super hard and wear
resistant. The leak performance is very good.[5]

2.2 literature gap

Even if the literatures write their views on the machine, but still they did not expressed
improvement of the manually operated huller machine. In our point of view the handle that is
manual, it can be easier than the previous works.

CHAPTER THREE
3.1 Methodology
3.1.1 Research design
 The method we used to design the huller in this project includes the formal way of
proposal documentation process.
 Reviewing journals literature about coffee processing.

 Analytical design of different parts of huller with 2D and 3D drawing of each part of
huller.

 Data collection using background knowledge from our environment or community.

 Gathering data from priory made researches.

3.2 Working Principle of Manually Operated

Dry Coffee Huller Machine
The basic principle of operation of “Manually operated dry coffee huller machine” is that when a
sufficient amount of power is applied by rotating handle manually which in turn rotates the mounted
gears on shaft this motion drives the two rough cylinders. The two cylinders rotates in a particular
opposite direction. The frictional force between two rough cylinders is responsible for the hulling
process. The processed coffee is transferred in to the outlet. The same type of arrangements of flow is
made in manually operated dry coffee huller machine. It consists of Hopper mechanism in which the
uncrushed coffee is stored. It also is having a flow control unit, which is connected with hopper. By

breaking, the flow may control.

4.1.1 Design of Huller

4.1.1.2 Design specification for huller

1. Rotating type rough cylinder
2. Its hulling capacity should be a maximum of 0.8 ton
3. Average human power to be 0.12hp

4.2 Design of Spur Gear

A spur gear is a gear with teeth that project outwards from a cylindrical surface. Two spur gears are
used to transmit power between parallel shafts.

Figure 2 Design of spur gear

Given:

Np = 70 r.p.m.;
 The average human power=P = 0.12hp = 90W;

TG
Velocity ratio=V.R = =3
TP

TP =25;
 Both the pinion and gear are made of steel with a maximum safe stress and Shears tress is ;
σOP = σOG = 200 MPa = 200N/mm2;

mm

 Let the starting torque is 25% higher than the running torque, therefore the spur gears
should be designed for power,
P1 = 1.25 P
= 1.25 ×90
= 112.5 W

TG
We know that the gear reduction ratio ( ) is 3. Therefore, the number of teeth on the gear,
TP
TG = 3
TP = 3 ×25
= 75

 Let us assume that the module (m) for the pinion and gear is 6mm.
 Pitch circle diameter of the
pinion, DP = m× T P
= 6 ×25
=150 mm
= 0.15m

 And pitch circle diameter of the gear,

DG = m× T G
= 6 ×75
= 450mm
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine

 We know that pitch line velocity,

 Design tangential tooth load,

P1
WT = × Cs

112.5 service factor (CS) So From service factor Table is given by, CS = 1)
= ×1
0.55
=204.55N

 We know that for ordinary cut gears and operating at velocities up to 12.5 m/s, the velocity
factor,
3
Cv =
3+v
3
= =0.845
3+0.55
 Since both the pinion and the gear are made of the same material, therefore the pinion is the
weaker.
 We know that for 14.5 involute teeth, tooth form factor for the pinion,
 Let b =Face width for both the pinion and gear.
 We know that the design tangential tooth load (WT),
204.55= (σ Op ×Cv) b × πm ×Y P
204.55= (200 ×0.845)b × π ×6 × 0.0966
b = 0.665m
In actual practice, the face width (b) is taken as 9.5 m to 12.5 m, but in certain cases, due to space
limitations, it may be taken as 6 therefore let us take the face width,
b=6m
=6 × 6
= 36 mm
 From Table service factor the other proportions, for the pinion and the gear having
14 .5oinvolute teeth, are as follows:
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine

 Addendum = 1 m = 6mm
 Duodenum = 1.25 m = 1.25 ×6 = 7.5mm
 Working depth = 2 m =2 ×6 = 12mm
 Minimum total depth = 2.25 m = 2.25 ×6 = 13.5mm
 Tooth thickness = 1.5708 m = 1.5708 ×6 = 9.4248mm
 Minimum clearance = 0.25 m = 0.25 ×6 = 1.5mm

4.3 Design for the pinion shaft

The pinion shafts are typically a cantilever-type design that has an enclosed impeller on one end and a
tilting-pad bearing on the other.

 We know that the normal load acting between the tooth surfaces,

WT
WN =
cos ∅
204.55
=
cos 14.5
= 211.28N

 And the weight of the pinion,

WP = 0.00118 T P ×b × m2
= 0.001 18× 25 ×36 ×6 2
= 38 N

 Resultant load acting on the pinion,

WR=√ W N 2 +W P2+2 W N W P cos 14.5

=√ 211.282 +382 +2∗211.28∗38∗cos 14.5

=149.37N
 Assuming that the pinion is overhung on the shaft and taking overhang as 100 mm, therefore
bending moment on the shaft due to the resultant load,

Mb= W R ×100
= 149.37 ×100
= 14937 N-mm
 Since the weight of the pinion (WP) is very small as compared to the normal load (WN),
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine

therefore it may be neglected. Thus, the resultant load acting on the pinion (WR) may be taken
equal to WN. And twisting moment on the shaft,

 Equivalent twisting moment,

 Let dP = Diameter of the pinion shaft.

We know that equivalent twisting moment (Te),

16
π 3
21411.86 = × 40 d p
16
d p= √2,726.24 ,
3

d p =14mm

We know that the diameter of the pinion hub = 1.8

d P=1.8 ×140 ,

= 25.2 mm
And length of the hub = 1.25
dP=1.25 ×140

= 17.5 mm

 Since the length of the hub should not be less than that of the face width i.e. 36 mm, therefore
let us take length of the hub as 36 mm. Since the pitch circle diameter of the pinion is 150 mm,
therefore the pinion should be provided with a web and not arms. Let us take thickness of the
web as 1.8 m, where m is the module.
Design of Manually Operated Dry Coffee Huller Machine

 thickness of the web = 1.8 m

= 1.8 ×6
= 10.8 mm

4.4 Design for the gear shaft

 We have calculated above that the normal load acting between the tooth surfaces, WN = 211.28

 We know that weight of the gear,
W G=0.001 ,

18 T G ×b × m = 0.001

 Resulting load acting on the gear,

 Assuming that the gear is overhung on the shaft and taking the overhang as 100 mm,
 Therefore, Bending moment on the shaft due to the resultant load,
M = W R ×100

 We know that equivalent twisting moment (Te),
π 3 π 3

16 16
d G=19.3 m ≅ 20 mm,
 We know that diameter of the gear hub
=1.8 d G=1.8 ×20=36 mm
 And length of the hub ¿ 1.25 d G=1.25× 20=25 mm

4.5 Design for the gear arms

 Since the pitch circle diameter of the gear is 450 mm, therefore the gear should be provided
with four arms. Let us assume the cross-section of the arms as elliptical with major axis (a1)
equal to twice the minor axis (b1).

 Section modulus of arms,

 Since the arms are designed for the stalling load and stalling load is taken as the design
tangential Load divided by the velocity factor, therefore stalling load,

Taking stress(σ b),
σ b =42MPa
a1= 18.65mm
b1=a 1 ÷ 2=9.3mm

 These dimensions refer to the hub end. Since the arms are tapered towards the rim and the taper
is 1 / 16 per unit length of the arm (or radius of the gear), therefore,
 Major axis of the arm at the rim end,

4.6 Design for the rim

Rim is the outer edge of the wheel.
 The thickness of the rim for the pinion (tRP) may be taken as 1.6 m to 1.9 m, where m is the
Module.
 Let us take thickness of the rim for the pinion,
tRP = 1.6 m
= 1.6 ×6=9.6 ≅ 10 mm

 The thickness of the rim for the gear (tRG) may be obtained by using the relation,

tRG = m

4.7 Hopper design

 A hopper used to prevent leakage and temporary storage for cereals before it enters the hulling
section. It has pyramidal frustum shape.

4.7.1 Material selection for hopper

 The material used for the construction of hopper is mild steel. This is selected considering the
welding technology because welding other material may require more advanced welding
technology.
 Mild steel property density=7850Kg/m3
 Thermal conductivity = 50.2W/mc

The selected dimensions are:

 Upper face of hopper :90cm x 90cm
 Lower face of hopper:40mm x40cm
 Height of hopper:25cm
 Thickness =5mm
 Hopper have a trapezoidal shape thus wise
1
Area of trapezium = ∗∑ of the side∗length
2
1

Area of hopper =0.6125m2

Conclusion
From the project we conclude that the components of a huller dry coffee processing machine, and the
Huller are the most important parts and if they are designed well, the whole process will become
efficient. The project also shows that it is possible to process a considerable amount of coffee with
limited space.

Recommendation
Finally, we recommend that the project should be continued by other students by making it
automatic rather than manual. It can be very helpful if this can be done.
