Noam Chomsky introduces a hierarchy of three levels of adequacy in his Theory of Syntax
(1965) ;One of these levels is explanatory adequacy. This latter is reached when a theory
accounts for the process by which internal grammar principles are known by the speaker. David
Crystal(2008 ) states " an explanatorily adequate grammar will explain why language
acquisition in a relatively short period of time is possible on the basis of primary linguistic
data.". Consequently, a theory that offers an explanation for language acquisition is said to be
explanatorily adequate .
