Many people are not familiar with the Underground Railroad and its significance in the Mid-Atlantic Region. This trail is an opportunity for you and your family to learn about the rich cultural history of our region and the significant people, places and events that brought black and white people together for the first time in our country's history. This trail will tell you everything you didn't learn in school about the Underground Railroad and Maryland's key role in it. The season began April 2nd and ends November 5th, when we commemorate Maryland's Emancipation Day with re-enactors of the period and participation by the local Quaker community at the Friends Meeting House. The FREE guided hikes occur every Saturday at 10:00am, starting at the Woodlawn Manor in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Please wear closed-toe shoes. Feel free to share with friends and family, it is a great educational experience for the entire family! During the 4-mile (round trip) hike we discuss the following: 1. What is the UGRR; 2. What is slavery and who were enslaved people; 3. The conditions that caused enslaved people to seek their freedom; 4. Significant people who participated in the UGRR, i.e. Benjamin Hallowell (The first president of Maryland Agricultural College (now the University of Maryland)), Harriet Tubman, etc.; 5. Significant places where UGRR activities occurred (i.e. Sandy Spring, MD, Pennsylvania, etc.); 6. Ways in which freedom seekers survived on the UGRR; 7. Resources to continue sharing information for all ages on the UGRR. I will conduct hikes at least once each month until the end of the season. I am scheduled for the following Saturday hikes so far: April 16th May 14th June 11th - Health Freedom Walk

June 25th - Montgomery County Heritage Days Festival (Extra Hikes scheduled to leave at 10:00am, 11am and 12pm) July 9th July 23rd If you would like more information, check out the sites below: Underground Railroad Experience Trail website (Directions to Woodlawn; Hours of Hikes and Schedule; Map of trail and other information.) http://www.mc-mncppc.org/parks/ppsd/parktrails/trails_MAPS/Rural_legacy.shtm Here is the link to the National Geographic website: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/railroad/ This website is interactive and is awesome for students. There is a series of books published by Scholastic which cover the following topics on a basic level that will help students new to the subject matter: If You Lived When There Was Slavery in America by Anna Kamma and Pamela Johnson If You Traveled on the Underground Railroad by Ellen Levine and Larry Johnson Also, the book, "Follow the Drinking Gourd" and this website: http://www.followthedrinkinggourd.org tells of the significance of the drinking gourd during the UGRR. I will have samples of these books on the trail and also have images of significant people on the trail. Please give me a call if you get lost and or need anything in advance of the hike.
