INTRODUCTION

Fire & Rescue Services the world over, perform their daily
duties with a single motto in mind, “WE SERVE TO SAVE”. Race,
caste, religion, language or regionalism never deters any fireman
while performing his duties at the scene of emergency. While on any
emergency situation, any firefighter, be it an Officer or a fireman,
works with just two things in mind, i.e. saving life and property of the
people in need.

The importance of the daily work performed by the firefighters

& rescuers, explains the need to perform in the best possible and
quickest manner for the first and every time they are required to attend
any emergency situation.

Properly trained, physically fit and technically sound

firefighters and rescuers, working in complete conjunction with the
tools they posses, can fruitfully tackle any emergency situation.
Regular practice along with proper training is the backbone for the
smooth function of any fire and rescue service.

This project work is an attempt to explain the standard

operating procedures to be adopted and adhered to during the drill
practice.

1
DRILL PREPARATION

 A Good Drill Instructor always plans any drill well in

advance

 Instructor always plans the basic outline of any drill

 He ensures that all the required tools and equipments

intended to be used during the drill are in perfect working
order

 He ensures that all the required tools and equipments and

other accessories have been kept ready before the drill
commences so that once begun the drill is not interrupted in
any way possible.

 He ensures that he is totally familiar with all the aspects of

the drill

 He ensures that his own personal attire is in impeccable

condition

 He ensures that all his subordinates are present in proper

uniform & personal protective equipment

2
AIM OF A DRILL

1. The aim of any drill is to teach firemen by

exercises to obey orders, and to do so in the
correct way. Good drill means good discipline. All
movements during the drill shall be performed
smartly and correctly.

2. Drill is the bedrock of discipline, allied with first

class .turn-out at all times. There is only one kind
of drill and that is first class drill.

3. To enable a commander to move his crew from

one place to another in an orderly manner

4. To aid in disciplinary training by instilling habits

of precision and response to the leader's orders.

5. To give junior officers and sub-officers practice in

commanding Fire Force Units.

3
DRILL INSTRUCTOR’s RESPONSIBILITIES

 To instruct is an art, not an exact science.

 The methods to be employed will vary according to the type

and standard of the class.

 Thorough knowledge of the subject matter is an essential

for any Instructor

 A good instructor always remembers following things,

1. To decide the aim of the Drill

2. To plan and prepare for the Drill

3. To develop a keen interest in the Drill

4. To conduct the drill with maximum physical activity

5. To conduct the Drill in the simplest manner possible

6. The human factor

 An Instructor must understand the relationship between an

Instructor and his squad and the human factor. Unless he
understands this he will fail.

 The good Instructor must possess the qualities of a leader.

Few of the most important ones, are,

1. Consider your squad as individuals and not as ‘the

squad’

2. Be firm

3. No sarcasm, no bullying

4
4. Be patient

5. Encourage by praise, when deserved

6. Be confident but not boastful

7. Be natural; carry yourself well but relaxed;

8. Set an example at all times

9. Maintain discipline

10. No favoritism

11. Be very thorough

12. Do not bluff

 The Drill Instructor must bear in mind that instruction is an

art and should be studied as such. He must always bear in
mind the primary object of his subject, which is to promote
and maintain a high standard of discipline, turn-out,
bearing and esprit-de-corps.

 The Drill Instructor must ensure that a squad understands

reasons for doing various movements.

 He must neither be a slave driver nor imagine that he can

achieve his object only by bullying and shouting, but at the
same time his attitude towards his squad must always be
firm and determined. He cannot afford to accept
anything but the highest standards in all movements.

 To achieve the best results the Instructor himself must

mirror the qualities that drill is designed to develop.
He must in fact teach by his own example.

5
QUALITIES OF A DRILL INSTRUCTOR

A good Drill Instructor shall,

1. Be smart himself.

2. Be able to demonstrate all the drill movements correctly.

3. Be able to impart his knowledge to his squad clearly and

concisely and in the correct sequence.

4. Be able to spot mistake and correct them at once.

5. Have a good word of command.

6. Never be satisfied with anything but the best.

6
TEACHING SEQUENCE

 The teaching sequence shall comprise of the following steps,

 The squad shall be formed in a semi-circle round the Instructor

but not facing the sun.

 Tell the squad in simple language what you are about to teach
them.

 Complete the demonstration by judging the time and shouting

the words of command of movements to be taught (Twice).

 Complete demonstration by ‘Numbers’.

 Demonstrate with explanation for every phase (i.e., what

happens on the command “ONE”, “TWO” and so on).
During any phase the Instructor shall show the squad how to
follow the commands.

 Make the squad practice the movements as many times as

possible.

 Make the squad practice, while the Instructor checks faults.

 Working as a squad and quickening up.

 Working as a squad, and quickening up

(i) By numbers

(ii) Shouting the time

(iii) Judging the time.

7
THE WORDS OF COMMAND

 Good drill depends on good words of command.

 Words of command should be pronounced distinctly and loud

enough to be heard by all concerned.

 Commands shall be preceded by a caution.

 The first or cautionary word of command will be given

distinctly and must be drown out sufficiently to give the men
plenty of warning of the untended movement.

 The last or executive word of command will be given shortly

and sharply and on a high note.

 A regulation pause should be made between the cautionary and

the executive words of command. A slight breath should be
taken before the executive word of command is given

8
HOSE DRILL

 Majority of the fire emergencies are tackled using water which

is conveyed to the seat of fire using a delivery hose.

 Thus hose is the primary equipment which is used by

firefighters to handle any fire emergency.

 Delivery hose is connected to a fire pump (primarily a

centrifugal pump) which pumps pressurized water into the hose
with high velocity.

 At the fire end a branch is connected to the fire hose with a

tapered nozzle.

 Due to the physical shape of the nozzle, high velocity of the

water is converted back into pressure

 Hence any fireman fighting a fire with a hose needs to

understand the dynamics of handling a charged delivery hose

 Hose drill enables a fireman to handle a delivery hose in a

disciplined manner

 Hose drill enables a fireman to understand how to lift, carry,

connect, unroll, under run and roll a hose

9
GENERAL MOVEMENTS TO BE NOTED
FOR HANDLING DELIVERY HOSE

1. Lifting a roll of Delivery Hose:

The crew member should stand at the rear of the roll, facing the
hose and should advance his left foot, bend left knee and stoop
sufficiently so that he could place his right hand on top of the roll,
near the male coupling, gripping it with fingers and left hand on the
underside of roll just where it touches the ground. The roll should then
be lifted vertically with the help of both hands placed on his shoulder
so that the male coupling is on top of the roll and points to the front.
The roll should then be lowered on his right shoulder, the right hand
still place on top of the roll, holding it firmly, and the left had
removed away.

2. Carrying a Roll of Delivery Hose:

Placing a roll of hose on shoulder, as stated above, and then
doubling up to the place required, right hand holding the roll firmly,
and left hand free.

3. Connecting a Delivery Hose:

(a) At the Pump- Right hand still placed on tip of the roll, the
free left hand moves up to hold the inside lug of the
female coupling. The left leg is then advanced, knee bent,

10
and the roll of hose is then lowered in the same position
to be placed on left thigh. While the left hand is still
supporting the roll by the lug, the top layer with the male
coupling is unwound by the right hand, holding the shank
or tail of the male coupling, so that the tail is held on the
palm of the hand.

Then holding it firmly the male coupling is thrust into the

delivery of the pump. The right hand now free holds the
outer lug of the female coupling, the roll of hose lifted to
about breast high by both hands, holding the two lugs,
unwinding the hose, while doubling up forward, paying
out the hose under the right arm pit.

(b) Intermediate Connection - The crew member should

follow another member with a roll of hose on his
shoulder as at (a) above about 2 paces behind him on his
left. As soon as the first member has unrolled his length
of delivery hose completely, he holds the tail of female
coupling of his hose with his right hand and stretches out
his left hand, palm facing behind. The second member
then slows down, holds the inner lug of female coupling
of the roll of hose on his shoulder with his left hand, re-
moves right hand from the top of the roll to hold the outer
lug and then rotating the lugs, Lowers the male coupling

11
a couple of feet. The first member immediately holds the
male coupling of the roll from the second member, with
his out-stretched left hand and connects it with the female
end of his roll of hose he has jus run out.

4. Unrolling a Delivery Hose:

As the crew member moves forward, holding the two lugs of
female coupling, the hose unwinds itself. If however, it is to be
unwound while standing stationary, then the male end should be
lowered to the ground level, trapped by his right foot and then the
lugs should he rotated which by their turn rotate the female coupling
and thus the roll is unwound.

5. Disconnecting a Delivery Hose:

The crew member should always face the pump or hydrant, take
the hose between his knees, near the male coupling, thus facing the
female coupling of the hose to be disconnected.
Then the lugs of the female coupling should be pulled apart by hands,
which will automatically disconnect the male end he is holding
between his knees.

6. Under-Running a Delivery Hose:

The crew member should stand facing the male coupling of the
laid out hose. Then he proceeds few paces from the male coupling,
bends low and holding the hose, lifts it up to his shoulder level,

12
holding it on the under side by his palms. Then he should proceed
towards the female coupling, passing hand-under-hand, holding the
hose all along up to the shoulder level. When the female end has been
reached, then the rolling up should start from female end.

7. Rolling up a Delivery Hose:

This should always be done from female end except Jar a burst
or defective length of hose. The crew member should stand facing the
female end. Right leg should be advanced, knees bent so as to stoop
low.
The left hand should be placed on the left lug, right hand on the
hose just where the shank ends. Then first turn of the roll is given so
that the female end now faces away from the crew member. Then he
should move forward roiling 'On. The position of the roll should be in
front of the crew member, equidistant from both legs, and as the
rolling is done, sufficient pressure is exerted by hands to make it
reasonably tight.

13
Types of rolls
1. Coil Roll: The most common way to roll a hose is a coil roll.

It exerts least damage on a rolled hose. Coiled roll makes it

very easy to carry the hose on the shoulder.

Coil Roll
2. Dutch Roll: This is another method to roll a hose where in
the hose is rolled by keeping the couplings together. When
rolled this way it is very to unroll the hose in a short time as
compared to coil roll.

Dutch Roll

14
3. Flaking: In this method a hose is rolled in the form of
flakes. Usually this method is used to stow the hoses in the
Fire Tender. Thus a fireman can run while unrolling the hose
in a shortest time.

Flaked Hose
4. Figure of Eight: Figure of Eight is another method of
rolling a hose. This method is employed where the available
space for rolling a hose is insufficient.

Figure of Eight

15

PROBLEMS :
 Add one length of hose:
A length of hose can be added either between the branch and
the coupling or at a coupling between two lengths of hose.
When the branch is outside, a building, it is usually to be added
between the branch and the last coupling, but when the branch is
inside a building, it is to be added at a coupling between two lengths
of hose at a most convenient place outside the building.
 Command “ADD ONE LENGTH OF HOSE" (Ek line
badhao):

Plate:-Laying the hose by no. 2 on left side in ‘C’ shape

59
No. 1 directs, No.2 to obtain a length of hose. No. 2 returns with
a length of hose and either lays it out in a circle near the branch as ‘C'
shaped or lays it out transversely, to the line of hose in the form of
figure of 8 near a convenient coupling between two lengths of hose, or
in the shape of the letter ‘S’. When this is done, No. 2 gives a signal or
a message by shouting, "Water Off" (Pani Band Karo) to No.3. As
soon as the water flow ceases in the line, No. 1 quickly uncouples the
branch and No.2. the coupling, No. 2 inserts the new length, after
the branch of advanced, under instructions of No. 1 sends back signal
or message by shout "Water On” . to No. ;3.

Command “REMOVE ONE LENGTH OF HOSE” (Ek line kam

message to No. 3, “Water On” (Pani Kholo). And returns at the
branch position and helps to No.1 to man the branch.

A burst or damaged length of hose is to be made up by first

removing the overhand knots and then rolling the same on male
coupling. It should always be remembered that length of hose rolled
on a male coupling or lying about with overhand knots to the ends, is a
burst or damaged length of hose and not to be used .

FOAM DRILL
(WITH F.B.2 & KNAPSACK TANK)
(SIX-MEN)

(SIX-MEN) FOAM DRILL- KNAPSACK TANK USING F.B.2

REQUIREMENT OF EQUIPMENTS
12. Trailer pump – 1 Nos
13. Crew of men – 6 Nos
14. Suction hose – 2 Nos
15. Delivery hose – 3 Nos (Minimum)
16. Suction wrenches – 1 Pair
17. Short line – 15 Mtrs
18. Metal strainer – 1 Nos
19. Basket strainer – 1 Nos
20. Foam Branch No-2 - 1No (Minimum)
21. Knapsack tank – 1 No (Minimum)
22. Foam Drums – Sufficient Nos.

Following precautions should be taken when handling foam-

making branch pipes with knapsack tank or with foam inductors:
1. The branch should be directed away from the fire until foam in
good quality starts to issue and again turned away after the fire
is out or at any time if the foam ceases to foam and only water

110
starts coming out or before the pump is shut down. If water is
allowed to fall on the foam, it may break the blanket and fire
may re-start if the oil container is still sufficiently hot.

2. Foam equipment should not be 'made-up' until it is fully

ascertained, that there is little chance of the fire breaking out
again.

3. While using No.2 foam branch with a knapsack tank, the tank
holds 4 gallons which can last for about 2 minutes only. Care
should therefore, be taken to replenish the knapsack tank
continuously by keeping drums of foam solution near at hand,
so as not to break the flow of foam falling on the fire, until the
fire is completely blanketed.

4. At no time, even the least quantity of foam solution should be

allowed to remain in the hose, knapsack tank, feeder tube or the
foam branch, as it will decompose on exposure to air and will
clog the equipment.

5. Drums of foam solution, once opened, normally should not be

kept for use at fires as the solution on exposure to air, may
deteriorate. Such drums should be clearly marked and used for
drill purposes.
