1. Introduction
In order to preserve the Vietnamese’s enduring tradition, weddings ought to follow the marriage custom
from the old days of our forefathers.
The wedding day is a very important and sacred day for every couple. Therefore, it is crucial to understand
and acknowledge wedding etiquette. In which, there are many things that are obligated to be done and things
that must be avoided.
Since the rites have been passed down from our ancestors for such a long period of time, it is necessary that
we preserve, respect, and continue them.
1. “cham ngo”
This step is similar to the debut of the groom's family and the bride's family; allowing each side to get to
know each other before getting married. In fact, this is an opportunity for the two families to understand
each other, get closer, no need for offerings, just bring areca nuts or flowers. Although it is a simple ritual,
many families today still keep it because they think that if two families do not get the chance to know each
other before, when they hold the engagement ceremony, the wedding for their children can be too sudden.
However, in terms of function, if you skip this ritual and go straight to the wedding, it will be a bit rushed.
Therefore, although it is not too important, the ritual still shouldn’t be ignored.
2. Pre-wedding ceremony:
The engagement ceremony is the day when the couple embraces each other, the two families accept the two
of them as each other’s, accepting the bride and groom of two families.
According to custom, the groom's family needs to prepare the following:
– Betel wine tray has enough jugs and glasses
– Two boxes of cakes
– Fruit
– Roasted pig and sticky rice
– xu xe cake
– An amount of money
– A pair of wine
– A pair of tea
– A pair of dragon-shaped candles
– Betel nut according to the request of the bride's family, but the quantity must be even
– Jewelry for the bride (a must-have pair of earrings, in addition, necklaces, rings, bracelets, engagement
rings…)
3. Bridesmaid Ceremony:
After the engagement ceremony, there will be a ceremony to ask for the bride, before it is time to officially
receive the bride. The groom's family representer, usually a woman close to the family, will bring the betel
nut to the bride's house to carry out the bridesmaid ceremony. The bride's mother will receive the betel nut
casket and bring it up to burn incense sticks on the ancestral altar of the bride's family. This is a long-
standing traditional ceremony, meaning an official acceptance for the bride to return to her husband's house.
4. Welcoming the bride:
After the bridesmaid ceremony, when the bride's family agrees to let the groom's family come to pick up the
bride, the groom will bring wedding flowers or gifts to welcome the bride home. And on that great day, the
two families will give gifts and dowry to the bride as a blessing for the newlywed couple to always be rich
and happy.
5. Partying:
Next, a party will be held to announce the marriage to officials of the two families, friends and relatives.
Currently, many families hold a joint wedding party after the wedding ceremony ends. If a private party is
held, the bride's family usually holds a party before the groom's family comes to pick up the bride, and the
groom's family will host the party after the bride’s debut to the groom's relatives.
6. The after-party:
Finally, after the wedding, when the bride has returned to her husband's house, the mother-in-law will
prepare a small ceremony. This is for the bride and groom to bring to the bride’s family and greet the bride's
parents. This is called the ceremony of rejoicing. The time the newlyweds return to the bride's house is about
1-3 days after the wedding. It depends on the geographical distance between the two houses, as well as
depending on the conditions, the bride and the groom’s job.
