CALCULATION OF WIRE ROPE LOADS

DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS :

1.) The design conforms to BS 5059-1-2010 ; BS 1808-2015 ; IS 800-2007

2.) The grade of steel conforms to IS 2062-2011
CRADLE & WIRE ROPES

Calculate the maximum tensile load in the wire rope

Inputs

The SWL is at the most extreme location in order to calculate the maximum single rope load

Cradle Dimensions
"a" = 2000 mm

"c" = 350 mm

Input Loads

Cradle mass " mc " = 300 kg

Cradle Safe Working Load " SWL " = 240 kg

Cradle drop height "h" = 65 m

Wire rope mass " mr " = 72.8 kg

Power cable mass " mp " = 20.8 kg

"g" = 9.81 N/m

Wire Rope Loads

Take sum of moments about " b " ;

" Ra " = (mc + mr + mp).g.a + SWL(a-c)
= 3873 N kN

Sum of vertical forces:

" Rb " = (SWL + mc + mr + mp)g - Ra
= 2343 N kN

Wire Rope Properties

Rope construction = 4X31

Coating of wire rope = Steel Galvanised

Diameter of wire rope = 8.6 mm

Mass of wire rope = 32.0 kg / 100m

Ultimate tensile stress " UTS " = 1770 MPa

Minimum breaking load " B.L. " = 54 kN

Factor of safety (By Breaking load) = B.L.

Ra

= 13.9 : 1

Factor of safety is greater than 8 therefore OK as per BS EN 1808-2015 Clause 6.7.1
