ABSTRACT
While natural resources are abundant, the productivity of india is low
compared to other leading countries. The overall productivity of coal,
particularly of u/g mines is again perhaps the lowest. The importance of
coal in the energy sector and the ambitious target set for coal production
is very high. To achieve higher production and safe mining condition
requires high mechanization in underground coal mines. As such the use
of continuous miner is increasing periodically, resulting in higher
productivity and safe mining conditions.
In Indian u/g mines by conventional mining the loss of coal is more and
the safety also less so the many underground mines planning to
introduction of the use of the continuous miner in bord & pillar mining
method. The continuous miner technology helps in achieving high
production and faster rate of extraction with safety.
The term "continuous" as applied to development machines has been one
of the biggest misnomers used for mining equipment because, on
development, they are usually anything but continuously cutting. The
main delays mostly occur while roof support is installed and often waiting
for shuttle cars to return from their discharge point for reloading. Many of
the difficulties have been overcome and most modern continuous miners
are "full face" machines. They also have roof bolting equipment mounted
on the miner in locations allowing roof bolts to be installed reasonably
close to the face.
The continuous miner use the shuttle car to transfer the coal from face to
feed breaker, quad bolter for bolting operations by using the automobiles
and remote controlled continuous miner hence the manpower is less and
productivity will increase and safety is more. The present study has been

7
aimed for optimizing continuous miner operations and optimizing the
continuous miner utilization under different conditions

8
INTRODUCTION
Operating large mobile equipment like a continuous miner machine in a
room and pillar operation is one of the most preferable techniques in
underground coal mining.
The room and pillar method of mining leave behind rooms (empty space)
and pillar of coal to help support the mines roof and allow passage of fresh
air.
The first fully mechanized room & pillar system in India, using continuous
miner technology, started operation in May 2002 at Anjan Hill Mine Chirimiri
Area, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL). The complete package has
been supplied by Joy Mining Machinery Ltd. This includes J2CM15
Continuous Miner, two shuttle car, a feeder breaker, a mobile Roof bolting
machine and electrical distribution system.

Since start up, the system has averaged over 40,000 tonnes per month in the
development stage driving number of galleries in Bord and Pillar system. This
mine has archived over 50,000 tonnes in a month with depillaring. This
technique is very safe as the Continuous Miner is being operated by Remote
control system where operator stands at a very safe place.

CONDITIONS

Checking Manual
Before starting of the Continuous Miner following points were considered.
A. Geological and Strata
• Geological condition changes.
• Sometimes roof is soft and floor is hard
• Has usually hard top or soft bottom been encountered
• Has the seam pinched or started to slope
• Have the ribs becomes unstable
• Sulfur and other irregularities in the coal
• The section unusually wet
• There been more dust than usual
• high methane presence
MAINTENANCE

• Have any repairs been made to the continuous mining machines

• Are there any indications that repairs are going to be needed in the near
future
• What is the condition of cutting bits
• Have any breaker been tripping
• Check any spices made in the power cable.
• Check the charge on the battery in the miners remote control units
(a) Pre shift inspections
• Inspect the cable for wear or cuts.
11
• Empty the dust bin
• Inspect the cutting bits
(b) Obtains supplies and equipment
• Before starting the shift gather your personal protective equipment and
any other safety devices you will need.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

• Self contained self rescuer (SCSR)

• Steel toed shoes with metatarsal protection
• Mine belt
• Safety gasses
• Hard hat
• Respirator
• Hearing protection
• Reflective clothing as required
• Gloves with finger protection (optional)
• Coveralls (optional)
• Personal dust monitor (optional)

GAS DETECTION EQUIPMENT :

• Methane , carbon , monoxide , oxygen , nitrogen dioxide detector
• Anemometer
Our project team was gone to Pinoura mines in Johilla
area SECL for success of our project. I seen continuous miner and much
other machinery like shuttle car and collected the data of continuous
miner, mines and other machine, etc.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MINE

Bangwar UG Mine is under administrative control of Sohagpur area

of South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. block area being 4.33sq.Km.The mine is
located 10KM away from Amlai Railway Station and about 3.0 KM from
the Amarkantak- Rewa state highway.
The mine is operating since April, 1989. At present, Bangwar UG Mine
is operating with
"Scheme for introduction of Continuous Miner package on hiring basis”
approved by the SECL Board in 235th meeting on 25.07.2015.
Accordingly, a CM package was deployed in the mine on hiring basis on

S.S.R OF BANGWAR

62
The estimation of rock load from the strata and its distribution over the
underground mine workings is of prime importance. In Indian
coalmines, CMRI- RMR and NGI-Q Systems are mostly used for
formulating design of support in rock engineering. In this project work
their estimation is been done and design of support system done by
CMRI – RMR & Q system.

Support systems are also designed with the help of numerical modeling
by simulating the workings. Study and analysis of the stress distribution
around development workings in coal mines is conducted through
numerical model.

MERITS OF CONTINUOUS MINER:

The Merits of Continuous miner using in bord & pillar method are

➢ Eliminates manual loading at face.

➢ Eliminates blasting operation.

➢ Remote operation from safe place.

➢ Higher production and productivity.

➢ Moderate capital investment.

CONCLUSION:-
Many of these ideals have been achieved to varying degrees of satisfaction
but matching development rates with longwall retreat rates is still a major
problem for many mines. Increasing numbers of development units to
attain longwall continuity is expensive and provides extra strain on all
other service functions (personnel, ventilation, materials handling, power
and water supplies, gas drainage, etc, etc) and is not usually a satisfactory
solution. As such to increase the production from underground coal mines
Continuous Miner is the only option.
The "ideal" continuous miner would:
• Be able to cut the full face in one pass
• Be easily moveable between locations without dismantling parts
• Be able to excavate right angle turns with a minimum radius
• Have roof and rib bolters fixed to the machine in a location where
each row of the designed support pattern can be installed without
moving the miner and be installed close to the cut face if necessary
• Have adequate space alongside to allow good ventilation of the face
area for efficient removal of gas and dust.
• Allow strata supports to be safely installed while coal cutting
continues
