STARTUP BUNDLE:
GOING LIVE GUIDE
30-DAY SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING
CALENDAR & POSTS TEMPLATE
Well hello there, I’m glad you’re here. It’s nice to meet you. I’m Lori.
We created this guide because whether you like it or not, social media should be
a part of your brand and business building strategy. It doesn’t matter if you use a
business name or personal name, if you want to grow your business online, you
personally need to show up and connect with your audience.
There is no separation between ‘church and state’ anymore. Social media (including
your personal Facebook page) should be used to attract, nurture and prime your
ideal audience. That IS where they are hanging out after all.
I get that it might feel weird to you to share your life, to do live video and to post
all the time… think of it as a job requirement. Creating and publishing content is a
requirement especially if you want to grow your business online.
That’s why we created this guide… to help you get started going to LIVE on
Facebook and Instagram. All you have to do is follow the instructions. Also, just
know that it’s ok for your first bunch of live’s to suck. I’ve never met anyone who is
good at something the first time they try it.
The goal is to show up consistently and you’ll get better over time.
Lori
P.S. Make sure you take a screenshot of your first
live and send it to me on Instagram via DM. I’m

INTRODUCTION:
You know you want to try it. You see everyone else doing it. But you’re scared — you
don’t want to sound like an idiot or appear unprofessional. So you tell yourself, “I’ll
do it tomorrow”.
There’s no denying that Facebook LIVE and Instagram LIVE (Livestreaming on the
Facebook and Instagram platforms) have changed the game, especially if you are a
personal brand.
Facebook and Instagram want you to do live video and they are rewarding those
that do by pushing it into the newsfeed often.
So if you’re pissed off that your Facebook business page posts aren’t getting organic
reach, or no one is paying attention to your well curated Instagram Squares, well it’s
time to start doing LIVE video.
• Bring notes. When you’re brand new to Livestream, it can be helpful to write
a script to follow, especially if you’re feeling a bit nervous. As you get more
comfortable with the process, you may find that jotting a few notes or a loose
outline will do the trick. Either way, it’s best to have a plan of attack before
game time to keep you on track and keep your viewers engaged.
• Spread the word. Increase your engagement by telling people about your
broadcast ahead of time. Share the details in a Facebook or Instagram post,
create a Facebook Event and talk about it every day in your Facebook and
Instagram stories. And don’t forget to tell viewers to share with their friends
too.
• Grab your gear. The beautiful thing about Livestream Video is that you really
don’t need a lot of equipment to get yourself started. But there are a few
things we recommend that will help to make your videos look polished and
professional. Check out the Livestream Gear Guide below to make sure you’ve
got the essentials on hand.
If you don’t have all (or any) of these things, it doesn’t mean you can’t go Live. You
may choose to get the hang of the whole Live broadcast thing before you invest in
any equipment and that is OK. The key is to take imperfect action and hit the “Go
Live” button as much as possible.
When you’re ready to take your video up a notch, these are the tools that will get
you there.
LIGHTING
Whether you’re brand new to Livestream or an old pro, lighting is important!
Good lighting makes your video more appealing and makes you look polished
and professional. Here are a few lighting options for you to consider for your next
broadcast.
Au naturel
If you’re not ready to invest in any equipment yet, don’t sweat it. Take imperfect
action and start with what you’ve got.
Make sure you’re in good light whether indoors or outdoors. Be sure not to position
yourself in front of a window and avoid having a light behind you. This will create a
ton of shadow and make it difficult for your viewers to see you.
Aim to have the light source in front of you or over your head for the best light
possible.
Ring Lights
These are a great, often inexpensive tool that are a simple way to make your
Livestream look more professional. You can purchase ones that clip onto your
phone or larger ones with a tripod set up.
Product Recommendation:
TIP: If you wear glasses, these may not be the best fit for you. Some users complain
that these lights created more glare than usual off their specs. But if you’re sans
glasses, these can be a great, inexpensive and portable way to start.
On Camera Lights
These are small lights that connect to your camera or phone to provide extra
illumination for your video. They’re great because they’re portable, easy to use and
brighten up your space on demand.
As with anything, the price point varies depending on the quality and features you
are looking for. A simple light to clip on your phone can be around $20. A fancier
version with dimmers and filters could run for several hundred dollars.
Lighting Kit
A light kit typically consists of 2-3 lights with light stands (shadow box lights). Two
lights are placed diagonally from each other and the third light (if you have one) is
placed in between these, facing you.
Product Recommendations:
AUDIO
Audio can make or break your video. And the good news is you don’t have to break
the bank (unless you want to) to boost your video’s sound quality.
Lav Mic
These microphones can plug right into your phone or laptop and clip onto your
shirt so they’re simple to use. They’re often inexpensive (about $25 on Amazon) and
really make a big difference in the overall sound of your video. These are a great
place to start when you’re ready to mic it up. Make sure when you purchase that the
Lav Mic works with your phone type or you can purchase an adaptor.
I don’t have a specific product recommendation here, just go into Amazon and
search Lav mic and the type of phone you have.
USB Mic
These are microphones that you can plug right into the USB of your computer.
Some brands require software but other simpler versions are just plug and go. If
you’re not a fan of fiddling with wires these may be a good fit for you.
Product Recommendation:
• Share the agenda. Give your viewers a brief run down of what you’ll be
covering in your broadcast and in what order. It can often be helpful to
include something enticing or exciting at the tail end so viewers will stick
around for the whole thing.
• Pretend you’re talking to your best friend the whole time if it helps. Don’t try
to be anything you aren’t. Talk the way you talk, act the way you act. You know
your stuff. You are the expert. Be confident and just be you.
• Be sure to finish with a very specific Call to Action (or CTA). Ask your viewers
to sign up for your Lead Magnet, click the link for your Brand new Signature
Program or book a call with you. Always ask for what you want and be
specific.
TIP: Go live often or at a specific time each week. This establishes YOU as the
authority and helps build a loyal audience who will be hanging on your every word.
Think of Facebook LIVE as a way to build an audience without having to leave your
couch. The best part is, the more you do it — the better you get at it.
Plus, and this is a big plus… Facebook favors live video over written content.
Just like any new tech platform there are a couple of things to understand before
you click that Go Live blue button for the first time.
There are also other free and paid livestreaming platforms that you can use to go
LIVE and also interview other people — it looks like you’re sharing a screen.
https://belive.tv/
https://zoom.us/
You can go LIVE from any of your Facebook pages — business or personal or inside
any group.
NOTE: Some people won’t have the option to go LIVE from their desktop, only from
mobile or a 3rd party platform like the ones listed above.
Good news! There’s even a way for you to test out FB LIVE on your own personal
page, where no one can see it before you do your big debut. Follow the steps below
to go LIVE on Facebook.
STEP #1:
Go to Facebook from your mobile device or if you have the desktop feature you can
use that. Open the status update bar as if you were going to write a post.
STEP #2:
Tap the LIVE icon which looks like a video camera with an eyeball inside it.
STEP #3:
If this is the first time you are going LIVE, Facebook will ask you for access to your
camera and microphone. Once you give Facebook access you won’t receive the
prompt again.
STEP #4:
Press the blue continue button on the setup page. Don’t worry, the continue button
won’t activate the Facebook LIVE. It’s just to finish setting up the platform so you
can go LIVE.
STEP #5:
Choose your Privacy Settings. This is where you can run a test to go LIVE on your
personal page so only you see it.
Click on ‘Public’ to get to the screen where you can choose your privacy settings.
There will be the option to choose Public, Friends, Friends except… and More.
If you want to broadcast publicly then choose Public. I wouldn’t choose the Friends
setting because then only your friends will see it and you want everyone to see it.
Or if you want to run a test so that only you can see the LIVE broadcast on your
personal page then hit More. Then you’ll see additional privacy options — Specific
friends and Only me.
STEP #6:
Write a ‘must watch’ description that explains why your ideal client would want to
watch the LIVE broadcast.
Just like a blog or email subject line, you want your LIVE broadcast description
to stop your ideal client from scrolling on past your broadcast in the crowded
newsfeed. The attention grabbing LIVE Description is what will appear on top of the
LIVE broadcast and show up in people’s newsfeeds.
STEP #7:
Set-up your camera view and add any appropriate filters.
The first option is to choose your filters. Facebook is trying to be like Snapchat and
has a couple of funny overlays and filters you can choose from.
Note: This option is only available on Mobile devices at this time and can’t be added
when broadcasting from your desktop.
If you decide to add filters into your broadcast there are several different options to
choose from — you can play around with the options that appear on the bottom of
the screen. You can also write text as an additional overlay option.
To add a filter, click on the icon that looks like a magic wand. Then Click on the
3 diamonds at the bottom of your screen. Once you click that, you’ll have several
options of filters you can choose from.
You can either have the camera facing you or you can reverse the camera and point
it out to a screen or something else. The reverse view is helpful if you are doing an
interview and sitting beside someone.
STEP #8:
This step will look a bit different on your mobile device vs. your desktop so we’ve
included different instructions for both.
On Desktop: Click the Go LIVE blue button. Once you click the blue button
Facebook will count you down — 3… 2… 1 and then you’ll be live.
On Mobile Devices:
STEP #9:
Rock your LIVE broadcast
When you are connected to the LIVE broadcast you will see the red LIVE button at
the top of your screen. That is your cue that you are LIVE. You’ll also see a number
beside the red LIVE button — those are the people who are watching you LIVE.
Don’t panic if you don’t see a number right away. It takes a couple minutes for
Facebook to populate your LIVE broadcast.
Broadcasts can be as long or as short as you want them to be. The longer you
are broadcasting live the more people will see you in their newsfeeds. Facebook
recommends going Live for at least 10 minutes. And if you’re really feeling strong,
you can go Live for up to 4 hours!
STEP #10:
Finish your LIVE broadcast.
YES! You did it. You’ve done your first Facebook LIVE broadcast. Once you are done
click the Finish button.
There are a couple of things you’ll need to do before you post the recording of the
LIVE broadcast.
Choose your Privacy settings again. You get to decide who sees the recording.
STEP # 11
Next, take a minute to upload the video to your camera roll. Uploading the
recording to your phone gives you the ability to store the video and use it as a
YouTube video or cut it down for Instagram videos. It’s all about repurposing
content!
Tip: Make sure you have enough space on your phone before you do this!
Then hit the blue Post button. That will publish the recording to your page.
It might feel really scary to do your first Facebook LIVE broadcast but I promise you
that it’s not as bad as you are making it out to be. Scheduling time on your calendar
to plan and outline your content and then to broadcast at least once a week is a
great way to get started.
The good news is that both platforms WANT you to do Live videos so they make
it simple. Plus Instagram rewards your Live video efforts by giving it top priority in
your followers feeds.
If you’ve never done Instagram Live, let’s get you started. Here’s the play by play on
how to get your first Livestream going.
STEP #1
Open the Instagram App and click on the Camera Icon in the top left corner of your
screen. Make sure you are in your Instagram Newsfeed for this, NOT your Profile.
STEP #2
Tap “Live” at the bottom of your screen. Don’t worry you won’t be Live right away.
STEP #3
You can now add filters to your Instagram Live if you’d like. Click on the Smiley Face
to the right and it will bring up all sorts of fun options for you to test drive. From
animal ears, to fully done makeup, filters can be a fun way to get your video noticed.
Just be sure to stay on brand!
STEP #4
Now it’s time to go Live. Tap “Go Live” when you’re ready. You’ll know you’re on
when Instagram gives you the prompt “You are Live”.
STEP #5
Once you see this prompt, it’s official. You’re live! Say hello and give your viewers
a birds eye view of what you’ll be talking about today and why it’s a must watch
broadcast.
You’ll be able to see who is watching and the number of viewers at the top of
your screen. Don’t worry if there aren’t a lot of people at first. It takes a minute to
populate and put the message out to your followers.
Also remember that you will still have viewers on your replay so talk as though
you’re speaking to a full house.
STEP #6
Now it’s time to present your amazing content! Show up here with lots of energy
and enthusiasm to show viewers you’re really passionate about what you do.
Be sure to engage with your audience during your broadcast. Read their comments
(you’ll see these at the bottom of your screen) and answer their questions if they
come up.
If you want to turn off commenting during your broadcast you can do this by
tapping this icon (iPhone) or (Android). Then select “Turn Off Commenting.”
STEP #7
You’ve just spent some time wowing your viewers with your incredible knowledge
and they most likely want more!
Finish up your broadcast with a killer Call to Action (you’ve most likely determined
this before you went live). Ask them to download your Lead Magnet, book a call
with you or send you a PM to keep the conversation going and bring them into your
world. Don’t skip this step!
STEP #8
When you’re ready to sign off, Tap the End button to finish your video. Then Hit the
Share button to automatically share the replay in your Instagram stories. This replay
will be available for the next 24 hours.
STEP #9
Once you’ve finished up, take a minute to save your video to your phone so you can
re-purpose this content down the road.
Simply tap “Save” in the top right to save this video to your phone’s camera roll.
And just like that you’re done! Congrats on making your first Instagram Live. We
know it can be scary to do this but just like anything, practice makes perfect.
The simplest way to do this is to go Live on Facebook from your laptop or desktop
and go Live on Instagram on your phone at the same time. We recommend using a
tripod for your phone and positioning it so your viewers can see and hear you well.
You can also do the same thing with two phones, one going to Facebook and the
other to Instagram.
Remember to take a screenshot of your first Live broadcast and send it to me via
DM on Instagram so I can cheer you on.
