Subject: Readings in Philippine History

Quiz 4
Direction: Give a concise explanation/discussion on the following items.
1. If the first battle between Magellan and Lapulapu occurred at Mactan ( Camotes),
then when did the change of Mactang to Mactan occur? Cite evidences for your
stand.

In Philippine History, the Battle of Mactan is one of the most significant events
that happened. However, it is still such a big controversy because historians are still
debating whether the Battle of Mactan happened on Mactang or Mactan. Based on the
documentary I have watched that is hosted by Jay Taruc featured several senior citizens
residence on Camotes Island claimed that Lapu-Lapu was a native of Camotes Island and
believed that they were either descendants or relatives of Lapu-Lapu. If it’s true that
Lapu-Lapu was “Poruhanon” then the Battle was literally happened on Mactang Island.
This support the claims because Mactang Island is nearer from Limasawa than Mactan
Cebu. And based on the accounts written by the Italian scholar Antonio Pigafetta “We set
out on Zulu at midnight. We arrived at Matan three hours before Daylight” To think that
arrival cannot reach 4 to 5 hours from city hall to Lapu-Lapu City whereas from Cebu to
Camotes Island it took the same time. On the documentary I watched, Jocelyn Laja-Tawil
the Municipal Tourism Officer of Poro Camotes Island showed several artifacts that is
dug from the coast of Barangay Mactang, Camotes Island and strongly believed that the
Battle was happened on Mactang. According to the records, Mactan was formerly know
as Opon and there were no excavations happened in Mactan, this clearly indicate that
Mactang Island could’ve been the place where the famous battled happened because of
the evidences displayed on Municipal Hall. In fact, some of the evidences are sent to
Cebu. However, the history of battle is hard to change because there is already numerous
books have been composed and interpretations created claimed that the battle was
happened on Mactan Cebu.

2. In your own point of view, what is the implication of the interment or burial of Pres.
Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani means for both survivors of the deceased
and wider community during his regime for whom the cemetery of heroes is
supposed to serve as a lesson in history and heroism? Discuss your answer.

In my own perspectives, the burial of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos in the Libingan ng

mga Bayani serves him right. We can’t deny the fact that during his administration, it was
marked as the golden age of the Philippines because of his numerous contribution
specially on economic and social contributions he brought to our country. Based on my
research, his first term was marked as unbeatable because of increased industrialization
and the creation of solid infrastructures across the nation, such as the North Expressway
and the Maharlika Highway. In terms of science and technology, Marcos assisted 107
institutions in undertaking nuclear energy work by sending scientist to study nuclear
science and technology abroad and providing basic training to 482 scientist, doctors,
technicians and engineers. During his time, Education has become reality for the poor
wherein he constructed and erected about 8,100 new school buildings and substantial
increased in rural health units and free medicine for the needy and medical facilities have
been extended all over the country. These were some major contributions of President
Marcos but despite of the things he has done , people will always have something
negative to say about him specially the victims because they would only remember the
evil things about martial law. But if martial law was not declared at the time, maybe
there’s no disciplined between poor and rich because rich would take control on
committing social injustice against people. I just want to state that I am not considering
Pres. Ferdinand Marcos as our hero but rather a great president because of his remarkable
contributions that Filipino has ever received.

3. What is the significance of GOMBURZA's martyrdom in the annals or the record of

the Philippine history?

The martyrdom of GOMBURZA fathers brought sorrows and outrage among

Filipinos. The unjust fate that befell on three secular priests create a new realization on
Filipinos that equality, human dignity and freedom could no longer achieved. However,
it marked as turning point event and inspiration to some Filipinos to fight against
Spaniards. This proves that the three secular priest impacted the life of Filipinos as well
as on our History. Their influence and bravery will remained in our history and served as
a sign to Filipino people to be united and eliminate oppression against Spaniards.

4. In your own point of view, if Rizal really retracted/withdrawn his anti-catholic ideas
through a document would it diminish his stature or image as a hero? Explain.

If there’s any document state that Rizal really retracted/withdrawn his anti-
catholic ideas , still it can’t change the fact that he had sacrifice himself for our freedom.
He fought against Spaniards in a silent but powerful way. Rizal is the living prove that
pen is mightier than the sword because he didn’t use violence to fight the Spaniards
instead he used the sweetest revenge through his writings. He even expressed his love for
his beloved country through his novels, poetry and articles. The works and writing of
Rizal, particularly his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo served as a tool to
awakened the knowledge of nationalism of Filipinos and to fight back against Spaniards.
If Rizal really withdrawn then why he choose to stand with dignity and principles during
his execution ? Why he died fighting for our freedom ? This only proves that from the
beginning he was with us, he stands for us to gained the freedom that we deserves.
However, there are people who seek evidences to stain his reputation despite of his good
deeds. In the end, for me Rizal would remained as a hero at the heart every Filipino
because of his remarkable contributions to gained our freedom.
5. As a Filipino citizen, what is your stand on China's aggressive policy denying
Filipino fisher folks to the area of WPS and worst they are building artificial islands
where they build their military bases which destroys ecology and marine life in the
area. Explain.

As a Filipino citizen, I opposed to the idea that China continuously oppressed

Filipino fishermen. They think they are superior above all the races especially to Filipino.
This case need to eliminate as it makes the Filipino fishermen at risk because it causes
fears, food shortage and greatly affect their livelihood. In this circumstances, thus
Filipino’s aquamarine resources will be greatly strained by vigorous action of Chinese
coastguard. As the incursion continues, it raises fears and renewed tension between the
relationship of Filipino fishermen and Chinese. In addition, the massive construction of
an artificial island on the ocean causes enormous damaged on marine environment. The
seafloor dredging is a great destruction of marine habitat and causes direct implications
for other species as well. If Filipino fishermen continue to be puppet on the eyes of
Chinese people, they will take advantage to control the aquamarine resources that
Filipino’s deserved to claim and experience. We need to fight back and claim what we
owns. We should eliminate oppression against Chinese people.
