Concept of network topologies
Network topology is nothing more than the way computers are
connected to exchange data with each other. It is like a
communication family, which defines how the network will be
designed both physically and logically.

In a nutshell, it is the way we are going to run the wiring that will
connect the computers that are part of a network.

3
Types of network topology
Depending on the distribution that we have in mind for the design of
a network, a specific type of topology will be used. Among the main
network topologies we have the following:

Ring Topology.

Ring Topology.

It is a type of simple network topology, where the workstations or

computers are connected to each other in the form of a ring, that is,
they form a circle between them. The information travels in only one
direction, therefore, if a node stops working, the network goes down
or stops supplying information to the other computers that are within
the ring, therefore, it is not very efficient.

Where they are used?

they are primarily used in wired industrial automation networks for
their low latency and ability to deliver the highest reliability, as well
as the fastest data transfer and recovery rates in the event of link
failure.

Tree Topology

Tree Topology

This type of network topology is one of the simplest. As the name

implies, the connections between the nodes (terminals or computers)
are arranged in the form of a tree, with a top and a base. It is similar
to the star topology and is directly based on the bus topology. If one
node fails, there are no problems between subsequent nodes. It has a
main cable called Backbone, which carries communication to all the
nodes of the network, sharing the same communication channel.

Where they are used?

This network structure is used in cable television applications, on

which future network structures reaching homes could be based. It
has also been used in broadband analog local network applications.

5
Bus Topology

Bus Topology

Bus topology is based on a central cable, which carries the

information to all the computers on the network, in the form of
branched, so that the information travels sequentially to the nodes of
the network. Its disadvantage is based on its sequential distribution
of data, so if the central cable is interrupted, the network is unusable.
It is currently very little used.

Where they are used?

it is mainly used in standard 802.3 (ethernet) and 802.4 networks,

much like a phone line with multiple phones connected, when a call
comes in, the signal can reach each workstation if configured like
this.

6
Star Topology

Star Topology

Here the distribution of the information goes from a central point or

Host, to all the destinations or nodes of the network. Currently, it is
widely used for its efficiency and simplicity. It can be seen that the
Host does all the work (a kind of local server that manages shared
services and information). Of course, it has the advantage that if a
node fails, the network will continue to work without inconvenience,
although it depends on the operation of the Host.

Where they are used?

It is mainly used for local area networks (LAN). Most local area
networks that have a switch (switch) or a hub (hub) follow this
topology. The central point or node in these would be the switch or
hub, through which all user packets pass.

7
Mesh Topology

Mesh Topology

This Mesh topology is defined as mesh topology. It is an arrangement

of interconnection of nodes (terminals) with each other, making the
figure of a mesh. It is a widely used topology among WAN or wide
area networks. Its importance lies in the fact that the information can
travel in different ways, so that if a node fails, information can
continue to be exchanged between the nodes without any
inconvenience.

Where they are used?

These usually include: industrial automation, energy management,

smart buildings, asset management, wearables, IoT, among others.

8
Hybrid Topology

Hybrid Topology

As its name indicates, it is a combination of two or more different

network topologies, to adapt the network to the needs of the client.
In this way, we can combine the topologies that we want, obtaining
infinite varieties, which must be adjusted to the physical structure of
the place where the network will be and the equipment that will be
connected to said network.

Where they are used?

We can commonly use these hybrid networks in: CCTV, Access
control, Panic buttons.
